Greetings Aspirants.
Since Tier 3 is approaching. I shall help you with the mantras that might be useful to you during descriptive writing.
Tier 3 will be of one hour and 100 marks.
Candidates are supposed to write one Essay/Precis and one Application/Letter.
For Essay Writing.
1. The basic Format - Introduction - Main Body - Conclusion.
Ratio of their respective lengths for a 1000 words Essay should be
150-200 words for introduction
450-550 words for main body
250-300 words for conclusion
Roughly in a ratio of 20/50/30
2. Essentials for writing an essay - There are two things needed for descriptive writing. Fact and Fodder. Facts are the data, statistics, events or statements and decisions which are on record whereas Fodder is the material you need to write around the Facts. It is your personal opinion, your inference. You pick from fodder, reach to a Fact. And then Write Fodder based on that fact again and the cycle continues.
Ex : The performance of india has improved under the captaincy of virat kohli (fact). Kohli has been a disciplined player and also showed scintillating sportsmanship on and off the field (Fodder). His form is reflected by his batting average in the past matches, all of which india has won (Fact).

After knowing about the Proportions and The components of an essay. This is what you need to know before you attempt your Tier 3 exam.
These are the steps to make your essay effective.
1. Picking the Right topic - Our aim is to achieve the maximum score and this is the most crucial step in achieving it.
The topic you pick should be the one of which you have thorough knowledge. You must know the in and outs of the topic.
2. Next comes "The Directive" - It is an instruction that tells you what to do with content given in the question. Directives are also called as Task Words.
You need to follow its instruction to make your answer relevant.
Examples - ( 'Discuss', 'Elucidate', ‘Comment’, ‘ Examine’, ‘Critically Examine’, ‘Analyse’, ‘Critically Evaluate’, ‘Assess’, ‘Outline’, ‘Justify’ and ‘Discuss Critically’) each has a different meaning and this gives the direction to your essay.
3. Make a blueprint - Before you start writing straightaway. Write in Roughspace or in mind the blueprint of your essay. Write the points you are going to mention in the introduction. then the next point it will lead to, then the what it will lead to and so on and Reach to a final and complete conclusion. Just like a song, an essay always looks good if it is continous. And all this process needs to be done keeping in mind the Directive of the question, so that you do not sway away from the objective. Once the blue print is formed, scrutinize it to see if there are any weak points, which are not strengthening your essay but are just making it long. Remove them if there are any and simultaneously think of any more strong points and fill them in at suitable place. After this is done your essay is ready to be written.

Essay Writing is similar to ordering food at a restaurant. First you must know what you want to order and Secondly you should know the right sequence of your order. If both are done right, you,ll have an amazing meal. But if even one of them is wrong, you'd not enjoy its taste.
The sequence should be
This is the best way to write a continous and tuneful essay.
Possible topics for tier 3? Is the focus on current affairs, historical or abstract concepts? Do discuss please.

A Popular, tried and tested way to make an amazing first impression on the examiner, is by opening the essay with a relevant quote from a famous person.
But you often wonder how to keep all the quotes in mind, so that you can implement what fits your choice of essay. The answer to this is learn two quotes on 5 evergreen topics and 5 hot topics. Evergreen topics are the one which keep showing in almost all exams. (for ex : Women Empowerment, Violence, Poverty, Environment, Democracy or whichever you feel evergreen). and Hot topics are the ones which are relevant in the current scenario (for ex : Military, Sports, Diplomacy, or whichever other you feel like).
The point I am making is, if you learn a few fit-everywhere quotes, it will help you in scoring great marks. For ex ; If you have remembered "An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind."
Now you can fit it in topics of violence at any level.
Whether it is talking about ISIS, Increasing military casualties on the fence, Increasing gang wars in state or cases of Heirarchial Rivalry in the rural regions of the country. But when you begin with such an apt quote, it creates an impression that you were well prepared for your exam.
Try it and discuss how you felt about it. All the best. Stay Tuned for more Mantras.
******** What NOT to do - Essay Writing***********
1. Do Not Deviate from the main topic. (If its an essay about poverty, continue with it, do not sway away to population and illiteracy)
2. Do not critcize the system or society that you are a part of. (An activist can not be a good administrator)
3. Some politically incorrect topics are provocative, which act as a trap by imposing a popular/intellectual view on you. Do not sing in the tune of the topic and get over excited about it. Give a calm, composed and fact based analysis/description or discussion which is fruitful. (Topics like - The masses are made a fool of, by media and films. Discuss). So you dont go around blaming, yes the people are illiterate and foolish and the bollywood is earning huge money etc. etc. Write a sensible essay.
4. Do not write negative aspects, problems unless you are suggesting corrective measures.
5. Do not write in a single tone. ( The problem of poverty is due to large population. It is also because of illiteracy. It is also because of lack of opportunities. It is also because of corruption.) NO.
6. Do not get personal. Do not name politicians, or particular persons ( ex : Vijay Mallya, Kalmadi, Rahul Gandhi, Narendra Modi or whatsoever) unless there is something like a scheme named after them which is being talked about. Do not mention particular cases as example. Use neutral anonymous words (the examiner is updated enough to get your point). Do not write this party did this in that year, then this party did this etc. Give a neutral answer without Hero worshipping or mud sliding anyone. Remember its an exam for selection of an officer of the government not a Journalist. Your opinion should be neutral and only fact driven and must not be discriminatory or stereotypical. I am not saying to not have any stand. Have an opinion but it should be driven by your analysis done within the essay, not your personal assumptions, which you mention in the essay out of nowhere.
7. Do not mis-quote. If you do not know a quotation, its fine, do not write it but never write a wrong quote/ jumbled up quote conveying the same meaning/ quote which you can not cite to its speaker.
8. Do not attempt a topic, which simply sounds and looks fascinating at first but you do not have enough knowledge or material to write about it.
