Please post ur SPJIMR PGDBM 2007-2009 experiences here..

@aalok_deep, I took the liberty to post ur experience here, hope u wont mind

1. Reporting time: There was considerable confusion regarding this. You have to reach there at the time mentioned in the email. e.g. my time was 8 AM.

2. Registration: You need to carry the documents specified in the mail. Registration takes about 45-50 minutes for the whole batch.

3. Seating arrangement: You are told where to sit, so you can't choose your place.

4. Group Constitution: 6 candidates in one group. 2 for Fin, 2 Marketing, 1 IM and 1 Ops.

5. Panel: 2 faculty members and 1 student.

6. Questions asked: Be very thorough with whatever you had filled in the questionairre form. There will be at least two questions from what you had filled up. You might be asked to express your views on the answers given by other candidates.

For my particular group, we started off with a brief introduction.
Then there were questions based on our answers given in the questionairre. We had a small group discussion on "Booming Indian Economy" which lasted for about 5-6 minutes.

There were mini discussions on other topics like "Do you think today's youth is not clear about his goals" and "Do you think school plays a more important part in your formation that college". These were triggered mainly by answers given by other candidates.

One question which caught me by surprise was "What animal would you represent"

Other questions were "Why SPJain? How can SPJain help you in your goals?"

One guy was also asked "Your profile is more suited to the FAB course of SPJAIN, why don't you apply for that?"

Other than this, there were no specific questions on your choice of branch, and knowledge of branch related questions"

Hope this was helpful. Please let me know if you need anything else.

Regards
Aalok

Guys plz do post ur profile and the city/locn of interview too.:)

What's there to mind in it... it's not intellectual property:)

As far as profile and location is concerned, here it goes:

x : 81.4%
xii : 84.8%
BE: 70.13%
CAT : 98.65%
XAT : 97.25%
1.5 years of work-ex with HSBC software, Pune in Investment Banking domain.

Interview 24th Feb, 9:00AM. Was shortlisted for 2yrPGDBM in Finance
Forgot to tell the location... mine was in Mumbai, in SPJIMR itself... loved the place

In addition to my original post:

Most of the questioning is being done by the student panelist. The faculty just pitches in to ask one odd question. Most of the time the faculty members are simply observing.

They are saying the shortlist for second round will be out by 1st March

Howdy folks! My GI 1st round (at Mumbai, SPJIMR campus) just got over some time back, and here's my experience in as much detail as I can remember it.

Before beginning my 'story' :P, to all you guys who are reading this with butterflies in you tummies before going for your interview, a word of advice : just CHILL! No, seriously, the panels are really friendly, and they really aren't probing too much into your personal stuff, and neither are they asking random bullshit to trap us or anything. Its just a simple friendly chat and they're just trying to know you better, that's all.

Onto the interview process.

I was given a reporting time of 8 am. I got there by 7.30 am, which was itself late by other people's standards. I met a guy who said he'd come at 7.00! Just take it easy guys. Be there about 5 mins before your interview time and that will suffice. They don't take registrations until sharp 8 am, and that too just involves you showing your documents to them, which takes about a minute(no certificates or anything were checked or asked for at anytime of the interview). They also entertained us all tea and biscuits :D

By 9 am, all registrations were complete, and they started calling out names in groups of 6. The first group was asked to line up in front of the room, and they where immediately whisked away by some senior to another room. In about 2 mins, the next batch of 6 was called. I was part of the 3rd batch of 6.

We were ushered into a room (or dome, as they call it). The setting itself seemed rather informal. They had kept garden chairs, arranged into a semicircle, all huddled together. It gave the feeling of being in a closed knit group. There were no desks in front of us or anything, so we just had to keep our bags/folders on our knees.

The panel was facing us. 3 people on the panel. 2 women (W1 and W2). They never introduced themselves. And one guy, who was a Senior studying in Spjain (SS). They had a lot of paper strewn all over the table. I suppose it must have been stuff about us. They kept taking down notes on the papers, or referring to them off and on, during the GI.

My group consisted of the following people (5 guys, 1 gal).

#1 a female with an engg bckgnd (electronics), 8 months workex at Avaya. (Marketing)
#2 myself (male), a fresher, engg (telecom), placed at lehman bros (campus), but no workex (Marketing)
#3 a guy who quit 3 months into his commerce, took up a job, did BMS, plus has a family business (Finance, not FMB!)
#4 a guy with engg bckgnd (electronics), hails from kolkata, worked with TCS for 3.5 yrs, worked on-site as well, at US and UK (IM)
#5 a guy with a commerce bckgnd (from pune), he'd got some 2-3 scholarships, workex 2.5 yrs with tata motors 1 lakh car (Operations)
#6 a guy with engg bckgnd. 1.5 years of work-ex with HSBC software, Pune in Investment Banking domain (Finance)

Okie. So first, SS asks #1 to introduce herself to the group. It was a really short intro (name, engg colg, current work). She was asked by W1 to elaborate a bit more about the work she was doing. Then I gave my intro (name, school, colg, achievements, current plcmnt). No qns asked. #3 gave a good intro, with hobbies et al. But W1 says "we'll get to that part later (although they never did)". #4, #5 standard decent intros. #6 intro was again a bit short. No harm tho.

After this intro round, everyone is comfortable. And the panel's really friendly too. Smiles exchanged. Etc. Then SS asks #1 something pertaining to the qn from the questionnaire (about some society work in colg, and how she gained from it). #1 was pretty convincing in her answer, talked abt the role she played in the society and wat she learnt from it. SS then asks me about the "strongest value stand" from the qstnaire and told me "See, you had power but still you found it difficult to convince others to take your stand. So how do u expect to do this in a real world situation, when others around you might be far more superior to you in rank?" I got what he was asking, but that wasn't exactly the way he was supposed to understand the situation. So I clarified my stand, explained to him how I'd taken care of the mess and how competiton rules the roost and stuff. He looked satisfied. #3 was quizzed about something in his form. Then suddenly W2 asks him whether he's aware of the FMB programe of sp jain. Some more discussion on that. #3 says he wants to be on his own, stand up on his feet etc. #4 had stated that he's worked in US and UK. So W1 asks him "Whats the starkest contrast you find between work culture in US and UK?" #4 gives gyaan on how UK blokes play totally by the book, whereas US ppl take it a little more easily, and how in UK day-to-day updates are a must, whereas in the US how evaluations, updates are only reqd say once in 2 weeks. #5 was asked a qn by SS based on "strongest value stand" from the qstnaire. #6 is also asked a similar qn, and he manages it well.

W1 points to me, and asks me about my schooling, and whether I enjoyed it (I've done my schooling outside India, and I've come to Mumbai for engg). I told her that it was good, but that I liked engg better, cos of the independence. Immediately she looks at #6 and asks him whether I'm right in saying that I haven't got much from schooling. #6 backs me up saying I never said schooling was bad, just that engg was better. #5 and #3 add to the "more independence, more freedom, more responsibility" point.

W2 then asks #1 about backup planning, if not sp, then wat. And something more related to her work. And why marketing. Then SS asked me about the "contributions by you or your family" and says "Why haven't you written anything about your contribution, and why only your parents'?" So I said to him that the answer he was looking for was there in the last qn of the questionnaire (contri by you to imrove urself, or work or society). I explained my contributions and gave them some gyaan on how "giving" and "knowledge sharing" is more important than just learning stuff. W2 then asks #1 to explain y spjain. She explains. Normal stuff. Admap, top 10 ranks, DOCC, social work etc. Then I'm asked the same qn by SS. Again rephrased most of what #1 said. Added a few points of my own. Talked about the wildly helpful seniors here on pagalguy too, and how it goes to show the culture of spj blah blah. W1 asks #3 how he thinks sp will mould his career. Similar answer. #4,#5 and #6 also give their views. More or less the same answers, just worded differently. #4 was pretty clear with what he wanted to do. Linked his answer to his past backgnd. Same for #6.

W2 says "We'll have a short group discussion now. You all know about India's phenomenal growth. And the growth rate touching 9%. Discuss." #1 starts off by talking about how although India is growing rapidly, that it still lacks in the agriculture domain, and she gives some facts, 60% of India employed in agri etc. #3 continues saying that he agrees with #1 and that India should invest more in agriculture, and he gave more figures 1.2%, 14% etc etc. #6 says he disagrees, and that since software and services is booming we should focus on getting the rural population to the urban side. I disagreed saying that agri is core to India, and that though we are called software professionals, we have no indigenous s/w like Windows, and that we must focus on developing tech to enhance agri. #4 supported my point. And #5 made a point on FDI and FII flows and how that would help. Overall, the GD was short. Everyone got just one chance to speak. Except #4 who just made one concluding statement. But it wasn't like a normal conclusion to a GD. Then W2 interrupts and says "Thank you, that was good"

Then SS throws the only unexpected qn of the lot "Which animal would you like to be and why?" #1 says cat for its cleanliness, I said dog for loyalty and also explained how a dog instinctively always finds the shortest path to get to an object, so max efficiency. #3 chose an owl cos of its focus, sharpness, that it's a nocturnal bird (W1 interrupts here and asks, "So does that mean you're gonna sleep in class by day?", some mild laughs follow). #4 chose a lion, king of forest etc. #5 chose an elephant, and made his point really well, about how the elephant is so huge, and unbothered b anything in its path, minds its own business, still is vegetarian and doesn't harm other creatures etc. #6 says he wants to be a fish for its streamlined nature, and adaptability.

And then it was over! W2 says "Thank you. We are done. You may leave". SS adds "You don't need to get back to regn desk or anything, you can just leave the premises."

We got out of the room(dome) and shook hands, exchanged some views on the GI, and then left. And oh yea, one guy asked an Adcom fellow when the results will declared, and they said "in 3-4 days time, on the website"

So that's it! SPjain round 1 GI over! Overall it wasn't too bad. A good experience for sure. May the best ones get thru!

If I can be of any other assistance, pls lemme know.

To those yet to go through the GI - JUST RELAX, and you'll do wonders!

@abhinav_kishore: copying your experience from the original thread:

GI center : Bangalore, 8 a.m.
XAT %ile - 97
Co-curriculars : Good
Work-ex : 7 months (Oracle)
Calls : PGDBM (Marketing) n PGDSM-MIT

First thing : "Reporting time" is the actual time at which you are supposed to reach the center. They take some time for registration and you start approximately after an hour with the GI.

All registration formalities are being carried my SPJ students who, in my opinion, are doing a swell job ! Let them know any issues you have.. they will take care of it.

For people like me, who got 2 calls : Please carry an extra photograph

Apparently, some Questionnaire forms could have been misplaced or not available for some reason. They asked some people to submit a hard copy on the spot. Make sure you are carrying one
.

I was supposed to start at 9 but due to some delays we started at 9.30. After we went in and sat, the panelists realized that they needed some time to go through our SOPs. We were asked to wait outside.

While we waited (a group of 6, 4 guys - 2 girls), a reallly nice n affable girl from SPJ gave us company. (Something wrong with me... don't remember any names.. neither seniors nor panelists... !!). We bombarded her with questions about the institute, the interview process, Dubai/Singapore center, difference between PGDSM-MIT and IM (PGDBM) etc... and she patiently answered everything !

A piece of info she disclosed: Tthe reason behind a one month's gap between the GI rounds is that SPJ wanted specialization specific people to be on the second round panel. Again, she said that we don't need to have in-depth knowledge about the specialization we chose, but we have to justify our choice.

Results of first round expected after 7 days (approx)

The GI started with the panelists introducing themselves. SPJ decided to give us a good time by sending a reaaaallly chilled out bunch of people on the panel. I don't remember the names, but there was a nice lady (NL) and a really nice gentleman (RNG). There was also one of SPJ students on the panel.

NL : So.. you all are scared ? Nervous ?

Group : A little..

NL : Don't worry.. this is a casual chit-chat.. just normal discussion )

NL : Start by introducing yourself.. please don't tell me whatever is already written in your forms. A person is best known by what he/she does in his/her leisure time. Tell me about that.. about your hobbies..

Group Member 1 (A fresher girl from Pilani.. doing her internship at Sun) : Gave her schooling background (some time in Singapore)... told about her co-curricular activities. At all times, she was mentioning whatever she has LEARNT from her activities.. was very articulate.. hobbies : Carnatic music.

Group Member 2 : Don't remember much.. but amazingly he didn't have much to say.. said about his school and college and then stopped. I was slightly shocked... arrey yaar.. 1 minute ka time diya hai.. keep talking.. so RNG just said.. "next"

Group Member 3 : Dont' remember much again.. told about his work with some NGO... said that it made him learn a lot.

Group member 4 : Working at Oracle.. told about his job profile.. college etc.

Me : Told about my job at oracle. quick trip through the different cities I've stayed in. A bit about different schools I've attended. Hobbies..

Group Member 6 : Another girl.. fresher.. explained about her interest in carnatic music. Wasn't very articulate in expressing herself. Told about her work for Tsunami struck people.

Next question by RNG : Suppose you are working.. you have a deadline at office.. you child asks you to attend a function at his school.. he'll be disappointed if you and your wife dont go... what will you do ?

Group : Gyaan.. send wife only.. take kid for treat.. etx etc.. I somehow missed answering this question. So did no. 6.

Please remember that the question was thrown open to the group. Anyone can start answering. You have to make sure that you don't cut someone else's answer and at the same time you have to ensure that you put in your answer before the panel shoots the next question.

Next question.. Explain any other such conflicts that you might face / have faced..

Group : someone talked about work-leisure (RNG said ileaisure can be sacrificed).. I told him about a real incident that I faced..

RNG : Ok.. what will be your parameters for deciding such conflicts...

Asked the ques to no.6 : She didn't have a clear answer. And no one would have. I politely interfered that it was too subjective and parameters wil depend on the type of conflicting situations.

RNG : Ok..explain with examples then..

Group : Some people talked of Commitment, Consequences etc. Again.. I missed this one. I had thought of commitment.. someone took my point before me

RNG : No. 1 and No.6 .. both of you are trained carnatic singers. sing something for us. No. 1 sang... looong time.. No. 6 sang... even longer time... Boys stared at both the girl like dumbos

NL (after a prolonged hibernation) applauds them. Asked them their favourite raagas.

RNG (to the boys in the group..) : Don't worry.. if you dont know Carnatic music it won't go against you !!

Then NL and RNG asked the student panelist to ask questions.

He shot the first one at me : IT industry... software is also your hobby.. why opted for Marketing ?

Me : Explained about wider career choice.. IT and marketing also possible together.. IT companies need to sell their products etc etc..

He was pretty satisfied (anyways.. he wasn't cross questioning anyone !)

He moved on to other people : Was specifically asking about the 'adversity' part in their form. No. 4 (Oracle guy) had mentioned that he had a hairline fracture and still stood first in class. NL came in : But that wasn't an adversity as such... there's difference between adversity and inconvenience ! No. 4 was kinda stunned.. didn't have much to say.. said that he hadn't faced any financial adversity ever !

RNG came in : Yeah.. that way we are lucky. We hope that you don't face any adversity ever ! (Very sweet of him to say that !)

Student panelist : Asked girls (No. 1 and No. 6 ) about specific incidents in their forms. Both had some typical senior-junior issues in colleges. It was regarding that.

Finally.. thank you all.. and we left.

Came out and was promptly escorted by another senior ( don't remember name !!! What is wrong with me !!!) regarding my PGDSM call.

Took me to a small room. Just the two of us. Introduced himself. Asked about my college, job. He was my senior in college (and me didn't know him !). Gave me a brief intro about the PGDSM course. Told me to shoot any questions I had. Asked him about IM v/s PGDSM, technical subjects covered and Track-I and Track-II. Answered everything satisfactorily.

Asked me about the work I do... my responsibilities... whether I was directly involved with coding/implementation (Yes.. I said..). Was extremely friendly. Said that we'll know the shortlists soon. I said thanks and left !

All n all .. a chilled out experience. Be thorough with your questionnaire forms. Be prepared to answer at least some basic stuff on why you chose a particular specialization.

All the best PUYS !!

Hi,

had my SPJIMR GI Today ....

Profile:
CAT - 98.99
XAT - 99.73

Xth - 84.4 ( CBSE )
XIIth - 94.0 ( Mah Board )
B.E. ( Comps ) 2005 passout - 71% ( Mumbai Univ )

Work Exp - 17 months in IT

had my GI at 10 AM ( Reporting Time of 9 AM )
My Group had 6 ppl
C1- Moi - Finance
C2 - girl ( Prachi i think , BE, 1 yr IT, last 9 months adv agency ) - Mkt.
C3 - Guy - Mech Engg - 9 months in DRDO - ops. and manu
C4 - Guy - working in IT - IT
C5 - Gal - 2.5 in IT, some more in XX .. Mrkt
C6 - guy - dont rem - Finance

P1 and P2 were two profs , and S1 was a student mostly second year ..

GI started by Introduce urslef to every1 ... 1-6 .. every1 introduced themselves ...

Now in the 9 AM batch- while asking the Intro, they said , speak abt .. this.. this .. this and this ...
So when P1 strted with me, i was waiting for a similar instruction, which never came .. :- ..
2 secs , 3 , 4 5 ... jaago mohan pyaare !!!
Then i started :)

Anyway, then they strted asking questions to every1 ...

Now we had a very nice calm cool GI, apart from 1 huge problem ...
C3 - mech engg, working in DRDO, in his introuction, said h wanted to be an entrepreneur, in the medical field, to set up xxxx and a co. which makes xxx , because *blah*
He went very very specific ...
NOw the panel was very much interested ....
they quizzed him ( not stress , genuine interest questions .. they wanted to know him / his ideas better ) ...
Now out of 45 mins , 20 taken up by C3 's PI ...
so only 25 mins for the 5 of us, who had no such specific commitments :-
So 5 mins for all 5 of us ( approx )
Each of us was asked only 3-4 questions including Introduce Yourself ..

My questions-

Intro urslef
y Finance
Y choose this coll XXX( my engg coll ) after 12th for engg ( because i was getting admin to better 1's on my 12th %age )

last main the student asked me 1 question on something i had written in the form .. but i noted P1 and P2 dint bother at that time , they were not noting or observing ... dunno, maybe S1 also gives marks ..

Anyway, it went ok, answered honestly, no grilling from their side ..
It was a very calm and composed int ..
no surprises .. no GD's .. no compare urslef to an animal :)

Bus, if i cd have been given 1 or 2 more questions to answer .. :)

Anyway ATB to all who have theirs tomo ..

Did everyone come dressed in formals with tie ????

haha..I was #1 in ther..:)

My group consisted of the following people (5 guys, 1 gal).
