hi gagan..even i've been put up in the same slot...let's hope we get more response from the other guys too...i'm trying to get in touch with some of the seniors and will post whatever info i manage to extract...

Mod Note : On users request

Hi I am Santosh Pandey. BE Mechanical Eng. My slot is 11.30am on 24th.

The intro part is over. Now we must focus on the discussion of key question.Last time they had psyometry test whether the same will be case this time also. What do you think? If anyone want to know about something please post we all try to find the answer of the same. Any question from last time interview we will also discuss. come on guys keep posting

hi all.

i had written a small mail to a senior who happens to be my friends friend...and i had written a few questions to him...
following is the reply to his mail sent to me...
hope it is helpful to you...

1.what would be the diff between the interview for the first round and
the second round?

There is not much difference in the 2 rounds . The panels will be similar . Just that a different prof will be evaluating you.

2.how much may i possibly be grilled over my manufacturing and
operations? as i have applied for the same specialization?

If you have a similar background then it would be easy for you. No probs. If you are making a shift you should give a very good reason for that . Also you should be very clear where will u fit in. Why are you better off than people with relevant experience?
YOu might be grilled to see your basic understanding thats all . Be thorough with some basic undertanding

3.the GI that we have now will have a mix of students for diff
specializations or will it be just manufacturing and operations?

Ya it will be 90% of the cases. Just for the lack of students u might have all students from same specialisaion , else attempt so far has been to have a mix. but what diff does it make

4.Please tell me about some lines on which i could start the preparations

Your CV is very imp ... be thorough with it .. examples for things witten and all
Pagal guy has lotsa trails where ppl have discussed their interviews last year and all

5.What is your specialization and can i also have guidance from some
"manufacturing and ops" student in case your specialization is
different?

Finance, will ask somone and get back to u on that

please let me know if i should ask anything else...

Hi!!
I'm Saurabh Arora
CAT Score-93 percentile
Profile: Marine engineer working since 2003
GI slot-23rd March 1330hrs
applied for-Marketting and operations

News is that the 2nd round will be similar to the first one but they will check ur clarity of thought more.Everything that is said has to be justified. No stress interview. Will be cool!!!But One thing that is killing me is that is the list for both 1 yr and 2 yr?B'coz here r only 9 students in 2yr MBA prog for the current year.Rest will keep on posting as I get to know.

One thing is coming to mind that they may ask Budget specific question related to your industry. Like what is impact on your industry due to current budget proposal like that? so its better to check all the budget highlights and understand it.

hi all...
first things first...
lets' first discuss the most important question of all...
"why Manufacturing and Operations???"

i'm sure all of us may have different answers and approaches to this one...let me put forward mine...

I'm an industrial engineer so "manufacturing and operations" would be the most logical extension of my career...

more answers and suggestions...please pour in...

i was expecting a better contribution on this forum but no problems i can understand that most of us are very much busy with work and studies so it's difficult to post info...anyway i'll take the initiative...
the most important question for us- What is Operations Research...

Operations Research, or simply OR is an interdisciplinary science which deploys scientific methods like mathematical modeling, statistics, and algorithms to decision making in complex real-world problems which are concerned with coordination and execution of the operations within an organization. The nature of organization is essentially immaterial. The eventual intention behind using this science is to elicit a best possible solution to a problem scientifically, which improves or optimizes the performance of the organization.

The terms operations research and management science are often used synonymously. When a distinction is drawn, management science generally implies a closer relationship to the problems of business management.

Operations research also closely relates to industrial engineering. Industrial engineering takes more of an engineering point of view, and industrial engineers typically consider OR techniques to be a major part of their toolset.

Some of the primary tools used by operations researchers are statistics, optimization, stochastics, queueing theory, game theory, graph theory, and simulation. Because of the computational nature of these fields OR also has ties to computer science, and operations researchers regularly use custom-written or off-the-shelf software.

Operations research is distinguished by its ability to look at and improve an entire system, rather than concentrating only on specific elements (though this is often done as well). An operations researcher faced with a new problem is expected to determine which techniques are most appropriate given the nature of the system, the goals for improvement, and constraints on time and computing power. For this and other reasons, the human element of OR is vital. Like any other tools, OR techniques cannot solve problems by themselves.

A few examples of applications in which operations research is currently used include the following:

* designing the layout of a factory for efficient flow of materials
* constructing a telecommunications network at low cost while still guaranteeing quality service if particular connections become very busy or get damaged
* road traffic management and 'one way' street allocations i.e. allocation problems.
* determining the routes of school buses so that as few buses are needed as possible
* designing the layout of a computer chip to reduce manufacturing time (therefore reducing cost)
* managing the flow of raw materials and products in a supply chain based on uncertain demand for the finished products
* efficient messaging and customer response tactics
* roboticizing or automating human-driven operations processes
* globalizing operations processes in order to take advantage of cheaper materials, labor, land or other productivity inputs
* managing freight transportation and delivery systems (Examples: LTL Shipping, intermodal freight transport)
* scheduling:
o personnel staffing
o manufacturing steps
o project tasks
o network data traffic: these are known as queuing models or queuing systems.
o sports events and their television coverage
* blending of raw materials in oil refineries

Operations research is also used extensively in government where evidence-based policy is used.

Very good information.

I was expecting all the puys who have been called for the second round of interview will flood this thread with their queries, suggestion and question. But even after 10 days there is not a single page. Why so?

Come on guys lets share and prepare together on this thread. I will try to to contribute every day something starting from today. Will request all of you to please come forward and start writing.

My list of top ten questions and the startegy to tackle them( It will be updated on daily basis

1) Tell me something about yourself.

startegy: This is an open question. the tone for the rest of interview can be set here itself. The interview will make the relative judgement here itself on the basis of our answers. Please present yourself very positively. Use all the good things to project yourself here itself. Here itself you can make or break your chances. If not performed better here will need outstanding performance afterwards in such a fierce competition. So how to do it

Do's: Talk about career objective, goals( long term short term), skills, strength. It will be better if you do your own SWOT and phrase it in such a way that MBA in OM is necessacity. What it will do? Obviously if you are doing it like i said above you will present your self as a professional candidate who has clear vision, idea and structured approach of doing things viz the most imporatant thing a panelist will look for.

Dont's: Talk point to point, do not talk on your hobbies and family in detail. Only short mentioin should be there.

My opinion is this is the question where you can make a panelist to walk on a path which you like. Here you can make a panelist to ask a question which is your strong area. I will call it as a open question where you can make way for yourelf by presenting a case for yourself positively and nicely. But if you don't satisfy the panelist here, then the question will be of panelist's choice.

Comments and suggestion is invited. I hope everyone will contribute
