hi pg-ites,

I have an admit from SPjain Dubai for Wealth Management.
I am trying to evaluate how good the option is. i also have a call from Spjain Mumbai. But for the time being dont wana consider what r the other options available wiht me. I am interested in CRITICALLY evaluating this admit!
Can u please post ur views on this insti?

Here r some imp details taht u may probably need:

1. SP Jain starts a new campus in Dubai (www.spjaindubai.org)

2. Offering specializations in absoltuely HATKE areas. (ask them why such areas, they mention the demand for such professionals in such areas in Dubai and the gulf)

3. Cost of the course is 8lakhs and inclusive of living expenses will come to nearly 10L RUPEES! (gets justified since they r pretty confident abt their placements)

Now i have a few questions in mind:

a. What if SPJain Dubai shuts down? what wil happen to my brand equity? coz i am going to be using SPjain brand all my life? I want some sensible ppl to evaluate this event happenign and the possibility of such a thing happenign and its impact on alumnis!

b. if i am looking at further studies, say in the US/ UK/ India for that matter, whats the scope of this degree when its comes to recognition given by the intis offering a Phd/ Fellowship course?

c. being a lady, i may probably choose marriage as an mip option say 5-7 yrs down the line!....how much mobility will this degree offer to my career? if i get back to India, will i get what i deserve? or if I go the US, will i be able to survive?

Junta, i am really confused! I know i have been asking a lot of ppl and most of them see only the rosy picture behind it! I am keen in seeing what could the potential risks be?? and what is the likly probably of such risks happening??

This will be a gr8 favor on a confused atma like me 😞

Pleassssssssseeeeeeee help meeeeeeeeeee :!:

Thanks in advance,
Archana

Hi Archana,

Firt of all ... thanks for update about the SPJain's new venture in dubai. Quite ambitious and I really can relate to where they are coming from. For a long long time I believed that Indian B-Scools are not able to market themselves well in international market and thats why they are less known to many in other parts of the world. SPJain's venture is a step in bridging that gap.

There goes answer to your first question. If SPJain is venturing something then if reputation is anythign to go by then thats not going to be closed down just like that. Your concern should be rather specialisation in those HATKE areas and whether you really want to do it? Do a course where you feel belonged... not just where placement is good. (Its little phylosophical but its true).

I really doubt that it would be a big problem for further studies. Though you should check with education body in US/UK and whether they recogniise this particular schol or not. It will be hard to enquire right now since the school is new. But anyhow, i dont feel any problem about going for further studies. Problem is in terms of job.

Sorry, I have no idea about the third question 😃

Regards,
Santosh

Archana: regd ur anxiety on pt c) -->
say u go there, perform well, grabs a job in finance sector (in dubai only) & work there for 2 yrs..... i.e. 3-3.5 yr from now on..... Now, with 2 yrs workex, if u return to india, i don't c any trouble in gettin a job overhere as by then indian banks (SBI already goin fwd to pick stake in foreign banks, ICICI expanding to SAARC countries...others will soon follow) will require people who have specialization in such field & have worked with foreign/global banks...... so don't worry abt the 3rd part as u plan to marry only after 5 yr...
The only rider attached to all this analysis is that u get a job in a Global Bank/Investment firm after the course ..... Best of luck for that & invest 2 cents (rather than payin me for my advie) after grabbin a job ;-p.....

Any updates in this???

any PG guys in SP jain dubai?

or anyone knowing about this inst....kindly respond about its credibility & over all reputation.

Hey Archana,
Guess I can help u out a lil here.I have been in dubai for the past two yrs now.Ok here goes......

Regarding the Hatke Courses,SP Jain has done some research before finalising the courses and it is true that such courses are in demand here in the gulf but I cant say that the same implies worldwide.

Regarding fees....Well it is high acc to the Indian Standards but compared to the fees for similar degrees by other colleges it is pretty good.Really cant comment on the placements. The thing is no institute is allowed to open here unless they r sponsored by some local firm...So usually its like a joint thing. So maybe after graduating you will get a job in those firms. Its possible.
Regarding ur doubt abt shutting down....I dont think so....Cos the univ scene is really coming up here. Also S.P. Jain wudnt invest in something unless they wud have done some good research.U dont have to worry abt that factor.

Lastly,my opinion is that this campus is good for ppl who r living here.If u r india then coming here to join an Indian institute which has newly opened wudnt b a good option. Also I dont think they will have the same quality of faculty here.In my opinion SP jain in mumbai wud b a better option than SP Jain Dubai.

Murtuza

Hey murtu,

thanx for thew comments...but then how would u rate SP jain dubai compoared to other B level schools in INDIA ?

My Be levela i mean not the elite ones...
B level - Nirma,FORE,IMI,Welingkars etc etc

Wats wrong if an indian comes to study there??
kindly enlighten more ;-)

Hi Archana,
Let me give my point of view to your questions. Please note that this is entirely my opinion and nothing biased against any institute. Also, this does not mean any institute is good or bad...but then it is just my personal opionion. You may choose to ignore it.

1. I am not sure what exactly they are going to teach in Wealth Management. You must definitely look at the curriculum and then compare it with those for Finance/Marketing/General Management. Not sure if they would be different. Also, just think if you would want to be in Wealth Management area...or whatever it is. Is it really that you are interested in Wealth Management or is it just that you are attracted by the SPJain label and just want to get an MBA degree or PGDM diploma whatever it is.

2. It also depends on how much work-ex you have. If you have less than 4 yrs of work ex, then I would suggest that you try for IIMs/XLRI/FMS as these are established institutions and would be having a very good faculty/learning facilities at their campus. If you have more than 4 yrs of work -ex, then you can try for ISB as it will be definitely adding value and combined with your work-ex it can definitely give you a shot in the arm in your career. You can look at US/UK b-schools also. Now this does not mean that SPJain will not have good faculty/facilities at Dubai campus, but then this is what you have to evaluate and find out.

3. Now coming to the cost factor, it is costing around 10 lacs and add 1-2 lacs more for other expenses, I feel the cost is very high. You can consider ISB or UK business schools who charge a similar amount and give a good quality education. You should definitely consider the ROI on such an investment coupled with the opportunity cost (if any).

4. Now looking from another aspect, how well is the school ranked...by industry, by academics etc. Placement being good is not the only thing that you should consider. Many institutes in India give the average and the maximum/minimum salary, but no one provides details about the median salary which I believe is a closer measure of how industry ranks a school, rather than max/min or average. Mind you, there might be a very high max and a not so low min salary, but then if the median salary is closer to the low salary than the high salary figure, then you have to seriously consider whether you want to pursue or not. You might be the best in the class...best in acads etc...but then u might not get the highest salary...so u have to look at a probability of what you can expect as a salary after you pass out.

5. The normal or the general way of evaluating an institute is based on the following factors.
a. The faculty - How much experience, what are the affiliations, any experience in teaching in b-schools overseas, any industry experience, any research?
b. The exam used for filtering students - how tough it is? what is the no of ppl applying for the exam? This might be a minor factor, but then I feel it is important.
c. General Student profile - Educational Background, general work-ex, salary taken before joining the school etc...
d. Placements - atleast last 2-3 yrs of placements should be looked at. What companies visit for campus, turn-over of companies, kind of jobs offered, MNC etc. Also you may want to look at the number of offers made. For e.g. McKinsey may visit institute X but may make 1 offer but might be visiting institute Y and making 5 offers...although this does not have much significance, but it will give an insight on how the company rates the institute and how much of its workforce does it want to be from the institute.

I guess if you can evaluate on the above mentioned points, you might be able to make a decision. I hope this helps. But again, I would re-iterate that this is entirely my personal view and it is up to you to take it or to junk it.

Well Mik u cant really compare this school to other B-schools in india cos this has just started.
There's nothing wrong in an indian coming over here 😃 ...but to study???? Wots the point in that. This is a new school. It doesnt have the same faculty, the same resources as the one back home. And u have to pay like double of wot u pay there in india. So overall if u c it doesnt really make much sense. This is actually a facility for ppl who wanna study in a good indian B-school but dont wanna come down to india.
Basically for Expats and ppl from other countries who r living here.I heard from a frnd that the Part time program offered by them is actually more popular here than the full time program.

Hi PG junta,

I have got admission offer for Investment Banking. But I also have calls from SIIB and XIMB. Now I am in a dilemma whether to shell out 60k or take a chance with SIIB and XIMB. I am a fresher (computer engineer, 2004 passout) from bangalore. Guys, pls give me some gyan. where does SPJCM stands wrt SIIB and XIMB? Admission offer from SIIB and XIMB will be made sometime in march.
As for their placements, it will commence in march. And regarding degree, it'll be same as that given to S P Jain, Mumbai students (as told by them, but i seriously doubt this).

Its not that complicated:SIIB is not an option because its a notch below the course we are discussing. Now to XIMB,if current trends are taken is ahead and a very crediible Rung 2 place to do an MBA.The question is ROI you end up spending 8..9 lacs more on a MBA from the sister concern of one of the 10 best B Scools in India or from a competitively priced sister concern of one of the 5 best B Schools in india.
I think we need to evaluate a 1 year MBA option in the case of a fresher.Quite simply put,it isnt enough time for you.I have 2 yrs and its not enough for me.
The faculty will be good, the industry interface superb but you will have absolutely no clue on the context of the studies and will come out one year later with a feeling of low value add.

Pay dont pay look at XIMB as an option.SPJ Dubai as of now is nothing more than good intentions for a Mgt insitute and you need more than that in your PG.

GO to XIMB.If you have got such decent sectionals(you need to get a call there) you have the capacity to crack cat again too.

You can visit the followign thread, where some current stufents of SPJ Dubai are active...

http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/life-spj-dubai-25010160

And anyway the thread you bumped into is one year old (almost).

Please also click on The Newbie Guide in my signature. pretty helpful.

by the way i heard the xlri campus in dubai has shutdown...is this true?

since the thread is obviously so old.. more than one year in fact, why not simply close it, so as to avoid confusion at a later stage?? moderator?

Hi archana,
read ur post. i have recvd an intvw call for sp dubai. my intvw is slated for the 2nd wk of mar in mumbai. i'm a freshly qualifoied CA . I had applied to SP dUBAI AFTER my CA results were out in Jan. The course fee is wat is botherin me too. I wanna know whether the post qualification pay pack will be good enough for me to be able to repay the Loan that is arranged for by SPJ?

Do u know the amount of loan that SPJ arranges for? i guess they have an arrangement with some bank in India which provides students going to SPJ Dubai with a loan . I wanna know if the loan covers the entire course fee ?

Also , i wanted to know if the course is recognised in India in case i wanna come back to India after my stint abroad. u spoke about using the SPJ brand name. i want to know whether sp Dubai has the same standing as SP mumbai coz if it does then u needn't worry. That's coz SP is a big name in India and going by the no of mba aspirants this year i m sure that the no is only gonna increase each year. In such a situation SP will never face a situation where it has no takers for its courses.

If ever Institutes need to shut down theyll have to be the lesser known ones.

However, u shud take a call only after finding out the standing this gmba programme has in India. If it is at par withSPJ Mumbai then there's nothing to worry.

I am almost as confused as u and would be glad if you could talk to people on the points that i have put forward and revert back to me . In the meantime i'm trying to do some ground work myself. Will let u know if nethn new crops up.

just wanted to let u know that the course fee at SP Dubai works out to more than 10 Lacs. ( 88450 dirhams @ i dir = Rs 12 ) and the air fare and food costs are to be borne by the student in addition to this. It might work out to 12 lacs in toto. This is as per the info i gathered from their website.

I'd also like to know about your experience at the evaluation . how was the interview ? are the ques completely acads based or is it a mix n match of everything. Can u give me a clearer picture on the process?
U can e mail me @ [email protected] if required.

c ya ,
Rajeev.
