Somaiya Social Cell, SIMSR

The Somaiya Social Cell established in 2003, is a voluntary body formed by students of K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research, Mumbai and aims at making a difference in the lives of various communities it works for.
In light of its tagline Touching hearts..Challenging destinies, the cell envisions to touch the lives of the neglected by bringing to light their latent talents.

The Somaiya Social Cell works in close collaboration with SIFE India. Students In Free Enterprise is an international network of students, academia and business leaders committed to the cause of bringing a change to the society.

Projects Undertaken
The efforts of the Cell are channelised in the form of various projects. The basic objective of the cell is not to provide monetary help to these communities but to empower them in ways that are sustainable.
Some of our projects are:

Project Warli
This project is a special initiative by the cell to promote the famous painting of the Warli tribe. The cell acts as a catalyst in exposing the talent of the Warli painters in the Nareshwadi village of Dahanu. It facilitates them by marketing their paintings and also helps them to independently find the right price for their art in the long run.
Project Sahas
Project SAHAS is a Microfinance project wherein a SHG comprising of women are trained in different fields to start some income generation activities. These women are trained to make fancy cloth bags, artificial jewelry, crochet and in chikankari. The Cell facilitates the sale of these products and helps to find instructors to teach them these skills.

Project Financial Literacy
Through the financial literacy project, the Cell implements a formal training programme imparting basic knowledge of savings, budgeting, loans, banking and post office schemes, entrepreneurship, Microfinance and Self Help Groups. The target community for the past years had been NASEOH (National Society for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped) Chembur. This year it is planned to implement the project with the Vocational Training Institute within the Somaiya Vidyavihar campus.

Project Pehel
Pehel is an initiative started by students of Somaiya Social Cell as an interaction between the SIMSR students and the children of construction workers in the campus, to aid them in their studies and teach them basic civic values like discipline, hygiene and introducing them to primary education including games and craft. Besides regular classes, activities like organizing games, screening cartoon movies and inculcating values of patriotism are carried out during festive occasions. Today Pehel classes are an integral part of the SIMSR hostel building.

Monthly activities undertaken by the cell
The Somaiya Social Cell also carries out numerous activities within and around the Somaiya campus in Vidyavihar. Some of the initiatives take up are Blood Donation camp, Tree Plantation, Aids awareness drive, Health check-ups for the construction workers families and Raddi day where old newspaper collected by students are sold to generate funds for the cell.
