Hi All,
Would anyone have an idea about how is the job scenario in Singapore once you finish your MBA from one of the colleges in Singapore.
I heard that a student is entitled to stay for 1 year once his course is over irrespective of whether he gets a job or not.
Also, how is the economy responding to MBA's there?
Cheers
Akshat
Ya Puys Plzz help me out!! Even m having same queries abt singapore as mentioned above???How it is as compared to US??How is the placement scope??does the degree of singapore hold value back in india???
I don't think Singapore b schools provide placement.
Singapore has a quite a lot of I-Banks Operational. You have Barcleys, RBS, Bofa, CitiBank and a host of other financial Institutions. So Singapore does have a market especially in Finance. They also have a huge vacancy in the IT Sector also.
One thing I am not sure though is how many jobs are actually available to the Grads from the Singapore B-schools.
Probably an Option is to call up a few consultants and just inquire.
Hi Akshatsaxena and Aki Roy, I live and work in Singapore, I'll be able to answer a few of your queries.

The economy in Singapore is relatively strong, if you have good academic results and an MBA from any of the 3 local universities or top international institution here - SMU, NUS, NTU, INSEAD, Chicago Booth, Manchester Business School, etc (full list of the top business schools in Singapore) - you will not have any difficulty getting a job that pays well - that's guaranteed, especially in Singapore, our government places very strong emphasis on academic results and education - for example, in our army, officers hoping to get promoted quickly and to the highest rank will have to get a postgraduate degree, the same applies for many government organisations here.

I'm assuming you're comparing the Singapore and the US job market? Maybe this will answer your question -
The unemployment rate in the United States was last reported at 8.2 percent in May of 2012
The unemployment rate in Singapore was last reported at 2.1 percent in the first quarter of 2012. tradingeconomics.com
Many Americans graduate into joblessness - this is true even for people with good education. The same can't be said for Singapore - if you have a prestigious degree, you will earn a significant amount of money here.
Regarding placement, many of the degree courses in local universities here have attachment programs in big and reputable MNCs - if you perform well in your attachment, you've essentially secured a job even before you graduate.
Here's an insight for fellow forumers - if you enjoy studying and you do very well academically, you'll earn a lot of money here - Singapore puts a lot of importance on paper qualification.

Hi HermanS,

The banking sector is one of the biggest industry in Singapore, there are 122 commercial banks here - MAS: Financial Institution Directory. One of the market trends that I've been seeing in SG is the adoption and permeation of online and mobile applications across a number of industries, one of them being banking - mobile apps for banks, internet banking, and e-commerce.
DBS Bank is a local bank in Singapore, they've currently over 20 openings under the IT category of their job listings. Take a look - DBS Bank - Careers Career Opportunities, it ought to give you a better idea of the scope of technology management in the finance industry. A person of your skillsets will be highly sought after in Singapore, the remunerations are usually very generous too.

The work culture in Singapore differs greatly across private companies.
In government organisations and government owned companies, people with paper qualifications and stellar academic results rise to the top and earn a lot of money - this country loves scholars - be it citizens or nationals. If you plan to pursue an MBA in Singapore, getting a scholarship in the local universities NUS, NTU and SMU means free education and guaranteed employment and good pay. Applying for PR in Singapore is also significantly easier for scholars.
The life in Singapore also differs for people. Although we don't have an explicit class system like in the UK, there are the working class, middle class, and the 'upper class' made up of politicians, scholars and top civil servants. Life here is hard if you do not have money, as is many countries in Asia, because unlike in Europe, us Asians do not have welfare systems. Education and good results are one of the surest ways to a comfortable life in Singapore - it's always been like that here.

Is it true that salary offered to MBA with tech focus is much lesser than that to MBA in finance ?
Any idea what will be the profiles offered to people with tech focus? ( like IT project manager / business analyst etc.)
Hi yogendra1

No, its not. Where did you get that notion from? :)
It's a common belief that people in finance earn more than people from other industries, reason being that they're dealing with money and all, but it is what it is, just a general assumption. Do you know how much the companies here spend on Facebook applications like a simple game or interactive app? Easily over S$10,000.
If you understand the value that you bring to your company, and you're able to justify the amount of salary that you're asking for, and confident enough to ask for it, you will earn good money. This goes for everyone else in every other industry.

An individual with a reputable MBA and good knowledge of technology can expect to move into the roles that you mention. On the highest level (c-level executives), CIO or CTO positions in an organisation would be a natural progression.
I'm not able to give you any specific profile because your definition of tech focus is too broad, haha.
Hi Herman,
I have a query reg MBA @ Singapore
I have a gr8 academic as well as extra-curricular profile.
However I have only 2.5 yrs of work-ex in regular service based IT firm
. Nature of work includes Back-end Testing/ Product management.
I wish to take a shift to Finance after my MBA? Is there a possibility for the same? I mean do company's recruit ppl from other domains without 'relevant' work-ex ?
Do let me know
Thanks

That's good, if you've any particularly notable achievements or extra-curricular activities - for example, one of my friend has done some volunteer work for UNICEF - all these make for great points to include in your MBA application that will make you stand out.

Any big projects that you were involved in? Any significant contributions you've made to your company? What are the insights that you will be able to bring into the program that other people would not be able to?

You should not be too worried about not having relevant work experience in the finance sector, many people use an MBA education as an opportunity to switch careers, and if anything, you past experience in IT makes you multi-disciplinary.
However, do take note that the opportunities that you have and ease of shifting career paths from Tech to Finance would depend on several factors:
1) The network that you create during your time in the program
Mingle with your coursemates, make an effort to connect with people who are working in the finance industry, your entrance into the financial sector will be much easier if someone helps to rope you into their company. My sister works in banks, she got into her current bank quite easily because she had good qualifications and someone who made a recommendation for her.
2) The career services that the university provides
Does the school provide internships with companies during the course of their program? Do they have strong ties with industry partners that prefer and regularly hire their graduates? Do they provide strong career services for graduates?
