When Sameer completes 60 steps in upward journey, Tarun covers 30 steps.. So 2:1 ratio..When tarun takes another 10 steps , Sameer takes 20 steps .. so overall 40 steps .. i am not sure though..

Relative speed = x + 4x = 5x
Time = 60/5x = 12/x
Distance travelled by Tarun = 4*(12/x) = 48 steps
IMO, there is a typo in the last line, it should be "before meeting Ram" and the answer hence is 40 :|

@pari19O1 Typo hi hai. Verified from the source (TIME and its erroneous questions :angry:). Tarun on the way up is meeting Ram on the way down in 40 steps, which is the answer.

@YouMadFellow 120 hoga if he goes to meet Sameer, who is cooling his heels at the top... By the time he takes 60 steps, escalator generates 30 in the opp direction and net effect is 30 steps covered.
