@Brooklyn .....see this solution posted above Ram speed -2 steps/secSam speed - 1 step/secEsc speed - e steps/secEquating the total steps covered(30/2)(2+e)=(20/1)(1+e)e=2 steps/secLet the time sam and tarun meet be t (I have assumed sam is coming down) number of steps on esc=60 relative speed of tarun and sam = 5so, t= 60/5 = 12sSo steps taken by tarun = 12*4 =48 .....m talking about the highlighted potion
sry my appraoach is different
@Brooklyn plz pm me your approach ......

@Estallar12: ye try kariyo:There were two escalators (moving stairways) in a mall, with the same number of steps, the first one moving up and the second moving down at the same speed. Ram and Sameer walk up the first escalator at their respective uniform speeds. Ram took 2 steps in the time that Sameer took one. Ram and Sameer reached the top of the escalator after taking 30 steps and 20 steps respectively. Ram then started to walk down the second escalator. At the same time, Tarun started to walk up the second escalator at twice Ram's speed. How many steps would Tarun take before meeting Sameer?
Its not specified that sameer started coming down the escalator...I think answer will still be 40 steps ( assuming that sameer is just standing at the top of the escalator)

Speed of sam =s
Ram = 2s
Tarun =4s
speed of escalator=e
u can easily solve for steps :
2s*E/(2s+e) =30
s*E/(s+e)=20
solve dis u get e=2s
and E=60
now time taken by Sam to reach top= 15/s
distance covered by Tarun in this tym= (15/s)*(4s-e) = 40
now Sam comes down , relative tym take = 20/(4s-e + s+e) solve u get 4/s
Tarun covers in this (4/s)*(4s-e) = 8
total 48

Aise mat assume kiya kar bhai. MI8888 ka answer sahi hai, this is from a TIME sectional test.

@Brooklyn Sorry answer to kuch aur hi hai... :splat:

Ram and Sameer walk up the first escalator at their respective uniform speeds. Ram took 2 steps in the time that Sameer took one. Ram and Sameer reached the top of the escalator after taking 30 steps and 20 steps respectively. Ram then started to walk down the second escalator. At the same time, Tarun started to walk up the second escalator at twice Ram's speed. How many steps would Tarun take before meeting Sameer?
Suppose the escalator produces 3x steps in the time that Ram takes 30 steps. So actual distance traversed by Ram+escalator when he reaches the top is 30+3x (length of stairs).

Sameer had taken 15 steps in the time that Ram took 30 steps. But no of stairs generated is the same for both, so the escalator produced 3x steps in the time that Sameer took 15 steps. By the time he takes 20 steps, the stairs would have produced 4x steps (unitary method). Since length of stairways is same for both, 30+3x = 20+4x => x=10, length of stairs is 60 units/steps. In other words, had the escalator been still like a normal staircase, they would have to cover 60 steps.

When Tarun walks with twice of Ram's speed, he basically takes 60 steps for 30 steps of Ram. We know that in this interval, the escalator generate 3x=30 steps. So actual distance covered is 60-30 = 30. He has reached the halfway point. Clearly if he takes 60 more steps he will reach the top. Hence 120! :splat:

@RoadKill 120 steps kiska answer hai bhai ?

@Brooklyn Bhai, tum yeh controversial question discuss kar rahe ho.. Sameer to chup chap apni jagah khada hai.. Use Tarun se naa milao.. Haan agar Ram aur Tarun ka milna hai.. to shayad ans is 48 steps.

bhai ram tarun mein 40 aayega....

agar sam neeche aa rha ho toh 48 hoga...maine calculate nhi kiya...

par agar sam upar khada hokar wait kar rha hai toh 120...
