Hi Puys, I am a newbie here.

I am an MBA from FMS, Delhi majored in Marketing and IT. Post MBA i have a total of 3 years of work experience in pre-sales in IT. I want a career shift to Investment Banking but with the work experience I have, it is next to impossible to move to that field.

Any suggestions on what i can do to come close to my goal. I know my goals were different when i was doing my MBA. I realized that marketing and IT is not my cup of tea. I have been avidly reading books related to finance but that still wont land me a job in Investment Banking.

Is there something i can do? Second MBA? If so, from where???? Any suggestions would be really helpful

Did some research and found there are 1 year MBA courses offered by universities abroad and in India. However, there is one risk with 1 year course, career switchers cannot move to consulting or Investment Banking profiles as these companies generally recruit their summer interns.

1 year courses dont have that option.

1. Any full-time program from a top US Bschool should give you a shot at IB. Apply to Wharton, Chicago, Colombia, Stern etc.

2. The finance background is enough for you to breeze through the course and perhaps put yourself at par with others with a fin experience (but no educational background).

3. IB jobs are hard to come by so keep plan B in place.

4. There is no point applying to bschools in India since you already are an MBA from FMS.

PS: I am working on a ppt so thinking in bullet-points :P

PPS: I think there is a separate thread for general queries but this can be maintained for 2nd MBA questions.
Hello, friend
Change jobs, I think you should think about, after all, before you that job has three years of experience, for a sudden you do not have experience of work, I would like to say how you or unfavorable. If you want to be challenged, I'd support you, the challenges are to be risky.

I think there is no need for another MBA. MBA is an educational degree and it should not be done only because it gives you a job switch. If you are finding it so difficult to switch to IB then perhaps you have to try to get into finance related jobs and get hold of any one domain (for example: private equity or commercial lending). Even in IT you can get domain knowledge if you work for a financial company, I'm in IT too and having worked for Wachovia corp(now Wells Fargo), Bank of New York and JP Morgan I can tell you that. Once you have knowledge its easy to sell yourself even if you don't have a degree. If you really really need a piece of paper to prove your knowledge then you can do a financial certification like CFA that is globally recognized and highly respected. All you need is break into finance related jobs and showcase your experience and knowledge.

MBA is a professional degree so i think there is no need of another MBA for you, or if you are interested in second time you can go for London MBA school.

I would agree with previous posts - since you are holding your MBA, you should be concentrating on your professional experience. Every year of working experience counts. Because you have experience in pre sales in IT sector, I would suggest to search for similar role in finance profile company. Then when you get aware of all the proccesses, will be easier to climb your career ladder and switch yourself into financial area. Good luck.

Hi All,

I am in a similar boat as @Madhushree. I am an MBA from a reputed 'private' college in India with 3 years of experience in Analytics Consulting and would like to switch over to products (web based, specific function: product management/product marketing).

1. I do appreciate your point of view. However practically witnessing the scene in India, it is very difficult to get jobs without 'context' in India. MBA campuses seem to be the only entry route for 'moving sideways'

2. I wanted to hear from people who've 'done' 2 MBAs: Is there a correct time, experience level? I do understand that I'll have to do an MBA from a Top 10 college in the US for it to be a significant value add on my existing MBA degree.
