Everyone knows about Schedules Banks, that they are the banks listed in the 2nd schedule of RBI Act, 1934. However, very few know about Non-Scheduled Banks.
In a nutshell, all those banks which are not listed in the 2nd schedule of RBI Act, are Non-Scheduled Banks.
The only Non-Scheduled Banks are known by the name of Local Area Banks. Local Area Banks were set up in 1996, under the Companies Act, 1956. They, however, are licensed under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. Also, they are eligible to be listed as Scheduled Bank under the RBI Act of 1934.
There were only 4 Local Area Banks until this year, when the Local Area Bank, Jalandhar was given the license for Small Finance Bank, by RBI.
The three Local Area Banks (Non-Scheduled Banks) are:
1. Coastal Local Area Bank, Andhra Pradesh
2. Krishna Bhima Samruddhi Local Area Bank. Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka
3. Subhadra Local Area Bank, Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
