NPA Issue
Now a days our banking industry is facing the problem of nonperforming assets. The assets of banks which don't provide any income to banks are called nonperforming assets. According to RBI, the assets on which interest or principle or both are due for more than 90 days are called nonperforming assets. Punjab national bank has posted ever highest NPA this quarter. Increasing NPA will weak the banking industry thus it will shake the whole economy of our country. So banks as well as government should take this problem seriously.
Reasons of rise in NPA :
1. Global slowdown: Period of 2000-2008 was a boom period of Indian economy. During this period banks lent out extensively to corporate but due to global slowdown of 2008 profitability of many corporate dwindled thus loosing the ability to pay back the loan.
2. Competition of banks: There is large competition between banks for their profitability. So to earn profit and to remain in market they provided loans without checking the credibility.
3. Legal system: Government policies are very latent to recover the loan of banks. This has also increased the problem of NPA.
Steps taken by RBI and government :
1. Government has started "Mission Indradhanush" to revamp the function of public sector banks. This will improve the transparency and functioning of banks.
2. Government has also suggested for bankruptcy code.
3. RBI has also tightened the norms for banks like to check the CIBIL score, analysis of right borrower. It has also asked banks to keep more reserve aside for NPA
4. RBI has provided the facility to fast track the SARFARESI Act cases.
