THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN THE COUNTRY

Media which is considered as a pillar in the society has a vast role in shaping the country. It is through media that we are connected with each other. In modern times the role of media has become immense. Be it the print media or electronic media, it has the potential to reach the masses and influence the decision making process of people.

A country is termed as liberal or peaceful if the media have given a free space to operate, run and broadcast news without the influence of state powers. Media should have the powers to reproduce the news staying true to itself. There is a new type of media also emerged through social networking sites which is the voice of young masses.

But in some cases we are seeing a lot of state interventions in news channels or print media. Recent example is the Kashmir case where the media is denied to broadcast news for few days. Now there may be a thought process behind that saying some part of media are creating more tension so they have to closed down, but knowing that, those part only needed to be blocked rather than paralysing the entire media.

Some media channels also for some cheap publicity and for earning quick money trying to sell the news which are not thoroughly researched or half truth. That has to banned or should be concrete step needed by the concerning authority against them.

Whatsoever is the situation the state and media should be responsible enough to work with their ethics to make the country peaceful and happy place to live like those countries in Europe, otherwise the dream of a developed India is a far reach story .

Merger Of banks

The government has decided to push for the creation of a new banking giant by merging the State Bank of India with its associate banks. The merger move comes at a time when the most important issue facing Indian banks-and the Indian economy-is the growing pile of bad loans with the banking system.

Right from the Narasimham committee on bank consolidation, many companies have recommended the consolidation of public sector banks. Though this has been attempted on a small scale in the past, the upcoming merger will increase bank's balance sheet and the consolidated entity would be better placed to serve the growing banking needs of the country as it would be easier to implement government schemes like PMJDY, DBT etc via a single bank than via many. It will also lead to reduction in operation cost and banks will be able to fund bigger infrastructure projects. It will make banks efficient in meeting stringent Basel 3 norms. Merger will help in diversifying risk management. Synergy of operations and scale of economy in the new entity will result in savings and higher profits for the customers.

Though the merger has been mooted, there have been some apprehensions to doing it now because it is feared that weak banks will drag down the strong parent. There is clear mismatch between balance sheets of SBI and the associates. Workers unions could be a big impediment towards consolidation.

Integrated approach by all stakeholders is the need of the hour. There is a need to study failure of giants before implementing the same to banks like SBI which are systematically important banks for India and too big too fail , at the same time basic needs of last mile connectivity should not be compromised.

Write a letter to your friend sharing experience of selection in SBI PO Exam.

18th July 2016,

Dear Sameer,

How are you? Hope everything is fine. I am writing this letter to inform you of my selection as a probationary officer in SBI. It is a moment to rejoice. Getting selected as a PO in SBI is not a cakewalk .I started preparing for the exam 3 months back. I prepared for the exam with complete focus, determination, hard work and patience. I wasn't distracted from my preparation for even one moment. I planned my exam preparation strategy well in advance before the exam. I made a schedule and stuck to it, never deviating from it for even 1 moment.

For my preparation, I purchase mocks of olive board and practice mock and gave 1 mock daily. Since, the exam has 3 components, prelims, mains and the group discussion/personal interview. For the prelims, I gave 2 mocks daily for a 2 week period. After the first mock exam, in which I had got less marks, I felt disappointed and de-motivated. I analysed where I went wrong and realized, I need to work more hard. So, I doubled my efforts. 2 weeks later I gave the prelim exam and cleared with flying colours. But, I knew the main competition was yet to come.

For, the next component of the exam, the mains, I first gave a free mock to test the area I was the weakest in. I found out that GK and descriptive section (essay and letter writing) were my weak areas. I prepared well and focused more on these areas. Finally, 3 weeks later, I gave the main exam and just managed to clear the cutoff. Next component was the group discussion and interview. For, this component also I planned well and managed to clear the cutoff.

2 weeks later, SBI released the final list of selected students. I was a bit nervous initially, on the day the result was announced. But, when I found my name in the list of selected students, I was shocked at first and then rejoiced. The success I achieved was a purely due to my hard work, dedication and the sleepless nights I had spent. My friends and family also gave me motivation and inspiration to do well, especially during tough times. Hope you are doing well. Give my love to aunty, uncle and your sister Mary.

With best wishes,

Yours affectionately,

Ganesh
