They say, Old is Gold. And yet, Social Media has been a welcoming as well as rewarding change in the way we do business. The already established and still growing arena of blogging as well as social networking sites have changed the way business processes are executed today. Be it the PR activities of any company or the recruitment process a lot has changed since Social Media came in vogue. While the benefits of reaching the masses with just a click are enormous, there are several socially, economically, and politically adverse effects too of social media.

Session 4: Social Media Plan Competition

In this session, the final round of a pan-India B-school & top graduation school competition, in the format of paper presentation/design of a marketing campaign using social networking and social media tools, will take place. Three of the honorary speakers would be the judges of this competition, whose initial entries and preliminary rounds would be held online.

Some facts which show the power of social media-:
  1. Gary Vaynerchuk grew his family business from $4 million to $50 million using social media. Gary's eccentric personality and offbeat oenophile knowledge have proven a natural path to success with his Wine TV Library.
  2. Vaynerchuk found first hand: $15,000 in direct mail = 200 new customers; $7,500 billboard = 300 new customers; $0 Twitter = 1,800 new customers.
  3. A Wetpaint/Altimeter Study found companies that are both deeply and widely engaged in social media significantly surpass their peers in both revenue and profit. The study also found the company sales with the highest levels of social media activity grew on average by +18 percent, while those companies with the least amount of social activity saw their sales decline -6 percent.
  4. BlendTec increased its sales 5x by running the often humorous "Will it Blend" Videos on YouTube, blending everything from an iPhone to a sneaker.
  5. "You can't just say it. You have to get the people to say it to each other," says James Farley, CMO Ford. Ford seems to know what they are doing, especially with Scott Monty leading the social media charge. By giving away 100 Ford Fiestas to influential bloggers, 37 percent of Generation Y were aware of the Ford Fiesta before its launch in the United States. Is it any wonder why 25 percent of Ford's marketing spend has been shifted to digital/social media initiatives? Ford is the only U.S. auto company that didn't take a government loan.

Somtimes, social Media can be harmful for the Brand. So,use it well.
1.Boycott BP campaign :Campaign was set up on Facebook to Boycott BP fuel Stations until the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is cleaned up.There was an uproar when the page was shown as deleted recently. It was put back within hours.
2.Nestle Kit Kat Video(Youtube) :Greenpace put up a mck ad of Kit-Kat alleging destruction of forests for producing oil.The Video was replaced by a censored Version.

Best quotes of the Social Media :
1."Focus on how to be social, not on how to do social"
2."The goal of social media is to turn customers into a volunteer marketing army."
3."Its not viral unless it is "
4."Linkedin is for people you know. Facebook is for people you used to know. Twitter is for people you want to know ":
5."Social media creates kinship between companies and customers, and kinship equals purchase intent"
6."Social media is about people, not logos"
