@chandni22 + @ramshyam1 + @shildhir - I guess they should give 2nd list. Because if Someone alpha_beta is selected in SAIL and somewhere else too, will he / she join SAIL ? Not necessarily. In that case, SAIL will have placement gap. If they select 480 and had another 48 as waiting list. That will help them get the desired candidate anyways.
@chandni22 bhel jab apna exam conduct karti thi to waiting list deti thi or kisi psu k bare me to aisi koi info nahi h,, but u r absolutly correct agar waiting list b de to company nd candidates dono ko fayda hoga...

MADAM, engineering maths is of 15 marks. Aptitude is of another 15 marks.
15 + 15 = 30 marks
Cut off = 25 for GEN category.
So, prepare them thoroughly. Check previous papers to see what kind of questions are asked. Sufficient enough to clear the cut off. Remaining - do one thing - take your textbook and read what is purpose of each instrument. Go through each formula and its applications.
This will help you get 40 marks in total.
You can practise some numericals too to get more marks. => around 50.
There were around 21K students appearing in GATE 2012 - instrumentation.
There were around 18K students appearing in GATE 2011 - instrumentation.
Net Increase
(21K - 18K) / 18K * 100 = 16.67 %
According to Analysts, the number will increase this year more than previous trends. (The Hindu says so).
So, we double this % => 33.33 %
Candidates expected this year = 21K (1 + 33.33%) ~ 28K
This number is smallest of those who appear in GATE. With this, it is clear that 50 marks will give you 98 percentile. How to get 50 marks => already covered above.
This time, do not make a criteria of getting full marks. That is stupidity. No one gets that much. Cut off for IIT MTECH is 96 percentile. So, 50 marks will get you there. If you do not get to PSU => you will get to IIT for sure.

i know two of my friend who interviewed for sail, already got into other two psus. better than sail . so they are not coming back even if selected , so i think there will be many more people like them .but sail generally givs only one list.
