i bought 10 pens ,14 pencils,4 erasers. my frend bought 12 pens, 28 pencils, 8 erasers. He paid half more than what i paid. How much percentage of my amount i paid corresponds to pens?
1st equation: 10P + 14p + 4E = 160 (can assume any value, I assumed total as 160)
2nd equation: 12P + 28p + 8E = 240 (160 x 1.5 = 240)
1st x 2 = 20P + 28p + 8E = 320
Subtracting 2nd from this equation,
8P = 80 P = 10
Thus, putting in the 1st equation, the cost of pens is 10P = 10 x 10 = 100
Thus, %age is 100/160 = 62.5 %
Hope you understood.
10P + 14p + 4E = 1 (since i paid 1,my friend paid 1.5 times of mine) (1)
12P + 28p + 8E = 1.5 (2)
Now, (1)* 2 gives 20P + 28P + 8E =2 (3)
Now (3) - (2) gives 8P = 0.5 10P = 0.5 * 10/8 = 0.625 (in fractions) = 62.5 %
PS : Another method which might be useful for some other scenarios
My approach is - let the 5 numbers be a>b>c>d>e. So a+b = 29 a+c=23 a+d=18 a+e=16. So b+c = 15. But 2a+b+c=52, so b+c=52-2a(Even).But we have taken b+c= 15. So we need to look back at the equations. We assumed that a+d > b+c here which is not true. SO a+d So I took b+c =18 and solved for all 5 numbers.

Since A finishes 6/7th of the work, B needs to finish 1/7th of the work. To finish this at A's speed, it will take 2z/6 = z/3 hrs. Since B works twice as fast, the time taken by him would be z/6 hrs.
I have got a doubt In a solved example of Number systems.. Prob 1.19- Find what maximum value of n will the expression 10200!/ 504^n be an integer?? sol:- in the shortcut process it is mentioned that as 504=2^3 * 3^2 * 7 and 7>3*2 that is why the numbers of 7s will be less than 2*3 & 3*2 .. pls explain it ...

Exponent of 2 in 10200! = 10192 Exponent of 2^3 in 10200! = 3397 Exponent of 3 in 10200! = 5094 Exponent of 3^2 in 10200! = 2547 Exponent of 7 in 10200! = 1698
Thus Exponent of 504 in 10200! = min(3397,2547,1698 ) = 1698
hey puys, I have a doubt in Arun sharma`s profit and loss level 2 difficulty problem...
A driver of a autorickshaw makes a profit of 20% on every trip when he carries 3 passengers and the price of petrol is Rs30 a litre. Find the percentage profit for the same journey if he goes for 4 passengers/trip and the price petrol is reduced to 24 a trip? (Assume that revenue/passenger is the same in both cases).. 1)33.33 2)65.66 3)100 4)data inadequate

I Dont where I am going wrong answer is 100%.
Pretty simple actually. Let the distance to be covered can be travelled by the auto in one litre of petrol.
Thus, if the price of petrol is Rs. 30 and he makes a profit of 20%, i.e. he gets Rs. 36 from 3 passengers, i.e. 36/3 = Rs. 12 per passenger
Now, price of petrol becomes Rs. 24 and he takes 4 passengers.

Thus, his income = 4 x 12 = Rs. 48
Thus, 48/24 = 2, i.e. 100% profit :)
eheh that was pretty simple.. Wonder i have to work even harder...:-(
I took 2Rs per passenger since the profit he got was 6Rs... And got this problem completely messed.. But its revenue here so it also includes entire income.. Thx avinav2712
