I have around 8 years of experience in IT. I am now working as a Senior Devevloper in a product based company.
Off late I am facing some health issues. I am suffering from chronic low back pain for about 6 months, which makes it difficult for me to be a productive developer. I am thinking of switching roles to a project manager in services companies.
I learnt that services companies give managerial roles to people of my experience. I would like to know how are these roles in terms of growth, package and work pressure. I will really appreciate if you guys can pour in your thoughts and give some details if you are aware.

Coming to your query, in services companies as far as I have observed people start getting into managerial roles after earning 4 years of experience. Some by choice of themselves some by choice of the company they are working for.
In your case you have massive experience of 8 years. I'm really skeptical that anybody in a services company would ever ask to write a line of code. The sole responsibility of yours will be to manage a team or a project.
In terms of work pressure it is surely lesser than writing thousands of line of code, keeping yourself glued to your system all the time. But the managerial role has intricacies of its own. Among so many tasks you may be asked to do some can be Resourcing, Project Scheduling, Client interactions, Billing invoice generations, handling the team assigned to you, projecting the targets for the quarters, participating in meetings with higher and mid managements and many more.
In terms of growth, you will leave behind your technical know how gradually as you will delve deep and deep into managerial tasks. It may be good for some bad for some others. It will be your call to decide how to take it. With time you will be promoted to higher management positions such as managing a whole account now like a full client project under which comes numerous number of small teams.
Even higher than this post is the Delivery Manager who is responsible for all the deliveries made to the client. The delivery manager can be located at the client site or in the offshore or at both the places if desired. This post brings with it an opportunity to have hands on at onsite at a senior level, so it is one of the most coveted posts in IT Services industry.
Still higher post is the Group Lead which kind of manages 3 to 4 accounts at one time (read clients).
So as you can see the opportunities are many. You will never fall short of work or get bored unless this kind of work does not strike your chords.

Thanks a lot for your valuable inputs. I will have to think and make a call on this. It hurts a bit to leave behind all the tech skills that I have gained over years and step up in to a different role.
Can you also give some details about the packages for these roles that you have talked about? And what kind of questions one has to face in the interviews for these kinds of roles.
