IIM Prof Quits after copyright violation charge

BANGALORE: In a major embarrassment to the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B), an associate professor of the institute has been accused of copyright violation and plagiarism.

The professor T R Madan Mohan who teaches production management at the institute has quit. The issue came to light after another professor at the institute, who has co-authored an article with Mohan, tipped off the director last week, about the alleged copyright violation.

And when the director questioned Mohan, he admitted to plagiarism. "There has been a violation. I sought Mohan's resignation and he has quit from the institute following the complaint," IIM-B director P G Apte told The Times of India on Wednesday.

The professor, who has worked with IIM-B for over a decade, has authored several articles and research publications in management production and other related subjects.

And that is why IIM-B is finding itself in a piquant situation. "If it orders an inquiry against Mohan, it must probe all the articles published by him, so far in the capacity as an IIM-B professor.

Besides, in a joint article, it is only appropriate that all the authors are punished or questioned.

By doing so, IIM-B will be opening a Pandora's box," experts on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) explained.

According to sources, the coauthor who unearthed the violation also teaches at IIM-B and is learnt to have been tipped off by a professor abroad about the plagiarism.

"Another article which appeared in an e-journal coauthored by Mohan was allegedly withdrawn after alleged copyright violation."

When TOI contacted Mohan at the institute, all he said was: "I do not want to talk about it."

But this is not the first time that IIM-B is faced with copyright violation.

Recently, the institute was slapped with a legal notice after a professor was accused of duplicating a book on marketing and strategy. Similarly, a professor at IIM-B who was accused of lifting articles, was let off after he resigned from the institute, several years ago.

Didn't hear anything on these lines today.. I checked the article.. oh my gosh what's this.. dated 5th Jan, 2006!

Thats strange. Why put up an article which is a good 6 months old now??? Though surprisingly never heard about this incident. Any idea what transpired afterwards??

Most of the research at least in India is done this way. reasons:
1. extreme pressure on profs to produce papers; their appraisal depends on that mostly
2. Schools trying to get AACSB/other accreditition requires profs to publish
3. creating name in peer groups--peer grp pressure
4. monetary incentives for pubications from most instts per publication
5. lack of funds to pursue research/collect data
6. most faculty not in sync with industry like in US/Europe and doing sponsored research

all these reasons push faculty to go for plaigiarism with varying degree. it stops once our premier instts are given more independence/autonomy from MHRD (poor Sr. profs get abt 40k PM sal in IIM's due to MHRD restrictions). compared to this IMD-Switzerland spend abt 50k Swiss franks for each case. teaching in b-schools is a very lucrative career in US/EU monetarily as well as socially...not so in India. if MHRD relinquishes control with premeier instts, am pretty sure they can also compete with global schools(remember IIMB not allowed to open branch in Singapore for MHRD objections)

i don't think there's any excuse to plagiarism...coz these same profs rebuke their students for plagiarism in their assignments...

if there's an excuse to plagiarism, there are a hell lot of them for terrorism too...do we buy them? ??:

I agree that due to Government policies, Excellance is not preperly rewarded in India, even in IIMs.

But still, plagarism can not be defended. If the pressure to produce some measurable research output is taken as excuse, than the excuse of a thief, decoit, or robber will have to be accepted on ground of 'compelled by the situation' argument.

NO, it can NOT be defended. The professor was not starving, but getting a decent salary tosupport himself and family. If he wanted to get recognition of peers, he should have work hard and produce real research.

Excellance either academic or otherwise can not be created in the environment of excuses.
