I am writing here to share my learning and experience after completing a PhD in an IIM. I was here in this platform 5 years back to gain more information. So, here is my answers to few questions that bothered me then, and perhaps lingers in the mind of current aspirants.
Should I pursue a PhD from IIM?
My answer: Deviating from the usual quora answer: ‘if you want to teach and research then go for PhD’, I will give you different perspectives. I believe life should not be outcome-dependent. It is the journey that matters. Doesn’t career choices define the journey? Yes, it does. My answer is from the view of satisfaction. There are three clues PhD journey would be happy for you: 1. If money does not drive your actions. Because PhD pays very less, and it can’t match the corporate standards even when you join academia as prof. Having said that, I can assure you if you are already not rich or super-greedy, the money is good. 2. You are happy being alone or when with few selected people. 3. Your satisfaction from an intellectual reading/discussion is more than your desire for money. With these 3 points, if you also have interest in economics, finance, psychology, or mathematics, PhD from IIMs may give you some slow adrenaline.
How quickly can I complete my PhD from IIM?
My answer: PhD is not for you if you are in a hurry. I believe the faster you try, the longer you would take. It is a journey that should be enjoyed. It will test your patience and perseverance. The average time to consider is 5 years. But, please mind, it is never a race. It’s your own journey.
Are the older IIMs better for PhD/Are the newer IIMs not good enough for PhD?
My answer: Let me first give a short overview of myself first. I am currently doing a post-doctorate in a decent university in Europe. Post-doc is doing research after PhD. The reason I opted to do this I enjoy research more than teaching. Money is good, here. My PhD is from one of the middle IIMs, and got this opportunity through a professor. So, the point is the faculty cohort is more important than tags. But, having said that I would warn about the current culture across all IIMs. PhDs are not treated well. Still, much better treated than universities. They are mostly treated as cost centres to the institute. The attitude is more evident in middle and lower IIMs where the structure of PhD administration is evolving. Having said that IIMC and IIML are even worse. IIMA and IIMB are the best among all. Summing up, your supervisor is more important than the institute. If you put effort, you would get good research output, that will land you in a job anywhere. Having said that, I would point out to the fact that apart from IIMA and IIMB the resources (intellectual capital and tangible resources) are more or less same in all middle and older IIMs. So, it does not matter much.
