Hi Ranjit,
This is a unique and innovative program launched by IIMCalcutta in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and IITChennai under the aegis of NMCC,MHRD with the support of Industry. The industry has been involved in the design of the course along with IIMC,IITK and IITM.That's the beauty of this program. The Post Graduate Program for Executives for Visionary Leadership in manufacturing PGPEX-VLMP has been launched with the support of Indian and Japanese Government.
This program is on the lines of LFM program conducted by MIT ,USA.Prof Shoji Shiba international expert in Quality and winner of Deming Award for individual has taken our first module-Breakthrough Management. He has been teaching LFM students for the past 15 years. The faculty at IIMC and IIT is also outstanding. They are among the best in the world. The experience so far has been incredible.

IIMC has started this program and the first batch has already joined. This is a specially designed program by IIMC, IITM and IITK for experienced people from the manufacturing sector. I am a part of PGPEX (not VLM) at IIMC and the other day the chairman of the VLM program was telling us about the program. It seems the faculty they are having is world class. A number of quality and supply chain gurus from Japan and other parts of the world are supposed to come and deliver lectures at IIMC. The program seems to be well-designed and impressive. There has been quite some media coverage during its launch. For more information, you can always check the IIMC website.....

Hi SKP,
It was nice gesture on your part to add media publications and other details which i missed regarding PGPEX-VLM program in my reply. It is nice feeling to be a part of first batch.I hope more and more experienced people in industry become aware of this program so that it fulfills its mission and vision.
Wishing you all the best .

Dear Hrsikesa Pankaj Sir ,
I am motivated by reading your message to contribute something for India.I am keeping track of One year full time post graduate program for Executives-VISIONARY LEADERSHIP in mfg(PGPEX-VLM) program for the last one year launched by IIM Calcutta.I am impressed with the overall course design and IIMC,IIT,Indian and Japanese contribution to this program.I have read a lot in The Economic Times and IIM Calcutta website regarding this unique and innovative program.I think i will be able to fulfill both my goals by joining this program.
Please tell me how can i get entry into this this prestigious program.I wanted to go for 2 years full time Leaders for Mfg(LFM) program conducted by Sloan School of Mgmt and MIT in USA which costs around
40-50 lakhs.
It makes sense to join a similar program in India which has better course structure and costs around 8 lakh.It seems Indian Institute of management(IIM),Calcutta is setting a great example by launching this program for other IIM's.It has got a well balanced approach.
I am eagerly waiting for the advt so that i can join the second batch of PGPEX-VLM program.Mr Hrsikesa Pankaj please elaborate on your experiences as a part of pioneer batch of PGPEX-VLM and guide future aspirants like me.
Arvind
Dear Arvind,
Nice to see your interest and enthusiasm for 1 year full -time PGPEX-VLM program. The much-awaited advertisement for the second batch ofPGPEX-VLM has come today in The Economic Times(Page3/5).
As IIM Calcutta,IIT Kanpur and Madras are involved in the program, the admission process is conducted on rotational basis.Last year IIM Calcutta conducted the admission process for the first batch. This year IIT Kanpur is conducting the admission process.there is small change in the eligibility criteria. The upper limit of experience has been fixed at 10 years.

Hi Hrsikesa Pankaj,
Thanks for your suggestion. Jut I am adding our mail conversation below. Thanks a ton.

Hi Hrisikesa Pankaj,
Thank you very much for your information. I am excited about this course as India is becoming manufacturing hub for electronics and semiconductor products too. I had semiconductor integrated circuit manufacturing experience of 6 years and software development experience of 1 year. As per my thought process and personal roadmap I want to establish ancillary unit related to semiconductor wafer fabrication which will create lot of opportunities in India.
Can you enlighten on following issues:
- What should be the mind set before enrolling the course so that we can utilize course effectively? Do you have any specific suggestions?
- What are placement opportunities? Although it is clear from brochure that there is no commitment from IIT/IIM.
- I have three international research papers. Whether R&D; experience is useful in interview process?
Kishan Kona
Dear Kishan,
Nice to see your interest in the PGPEX-VLM program.Your idea of
becoming an entrepreneur -semiconductor wafer fabrication is great.
1.Have an open mind.It will be your strong point in the interview.Just
focus on your hardcore manufacturing experience in
operations,production,R&D; etc..Software development experience will
help you later on.Don't focus much on that in your application stage.
2.The placement is not a big issue .Even Harvard gives placement
guarantee.IIT-IIM brand is very strong.i can say you will have
multiple offers with the sort of experience you have.
3.You can add Research papers in your profile. The R&D; experience is a
definite plus. You can steer your interview in your strong areas.
Just clear the written test.Min cut-off and negative marking is a
challenge.Do some practice tests from CAT/GMAT/GRE book in
verbal/anaytical area.Maths is of 10-11-12 th level.Engg aptitude test
is mostly mech.elec, metallurgy based with few basic questions on
operations mgmt.Interview will be cake walk for you.
Why don't you register in pagalguy website and ask queries in the
PGPEX-VLM discussion page.It will be beneficial for all potential
aspirants.

How are you doing? I have few queries regarding application .I am planning to take recommendation letters from my manufacturing employer as I worked there for six years. I am trying in my present organization but I am not sure I may get it. Is it okay because I had good reputation from my previous organization managers and they are encouraging me for this program and they are happy to provide me two letters, one from R&D; division and other from production.
I have GRE score of 1100. Should I mention my GRE score in application form?
I have started my preparation for aptitude and going through basic concepts of engineering.
Please do let me know dos and donts in application form.
Thanks and Best Regards,

It's great that you are already gearing up for the D-Day.Please take your time in filling up the application form. Please mention GMAT/GRE score if you have taken the exam .The score is treated as part of academic record.Anyway you got to appear for the aptitude test on 31st May/1st June 2008 if shortlisted.
You can provide recommendation letter from either current or previous employer.Only one is required. You can send both if you get it.That's not the issue.
Please take your aptitude test seriously.I know guys from last year who scored very highly in one section but could not clear another section. So, time management is of utmost importance. In fact, both speed and accuracy are paramount. You have got almost seven weeks to prepare and get going. You got to just go with an open mind and crack the test. That's the key.
In case of further queries, please donot hesitate to ask.

As the space available in application form is not sufficient to write answers, please attach additional handwritten/typed A4 size sheets. Those 3 questions are important. Its doesn't matter whether you type or write by hand. Please make it a point to write them precisely and thoroughly and keep one copy of application form with you for reference at the time of interview.
I am confident that you will hit the bull's eye.
With best wishes,

Good going.Nice to see you motivated for the PGPEX-VLM.You are going very systematically. That's the sign of a serious candidate.Still you may be surprised after seeing the question paper. Please give equal importance to all sections. There is always a paucity of time.Read general topics like largest ERP vendor(SAP),anodizing, bottlenecking questions, probability, permutation & combinations, reasoning etc. apart from Verbal and Quantitative portion from GMAT/CAT books.Focus on interview also :idea: simultaneously.Keep moving.

It is to see your passion and enthusiasm for PGPEX-VLM.I hope you are able to squeeze in a bit of time for preparation for PGPEX-VLM despite your busy schedule. You are definitely in line for Mckinsey next year if you so desire. Our course work at IIMC was really memorable. At IITK the winter during Jan-Feb made going even more enjoyable.IITM was a pleasant surprise as Summer in Chennai was bit cooler this time with frequent rains. All in all it has been a lifetime experience after working for 9years.
I am confident you will emerge victorious and come out with flying colours.
With Best wishes,
Hrsikesa Pankaj
