My Interview Debrief
Location- Orchid, Mumbai; Date- 12th Sep 15; Time Slot - 9AM
After initial document verification we, we were called in for WAT at sharp 9AM. The 3 interview panelists welcomed us and told us about the written test & what they expect from it. The topic was related to the fall in China stock market & the devaluation of its currency & whether this was the right time for India to take advantage & what were our thoughts on the same. 10 mins to think about the topic & create a basic flow for the topic (you aren't allowed to write in the first 10mins in the main sheet). The following 20 mins is sufficient to write a page on any topic.
Interview panelists- One young professor (M1), one female alumna (F1) & another professor but a little aged (M2). I was the second to enter for the interview.
M1 - How do you pronounce your name?
F1 - You have been in L&T for so long? Why?
Me- I am happy with I do at work, so didn't feel the need to jump companies
F1 - Tell us what you do? What is ur job profile?
M1- What is green field project? (Had mentioned it in my previous answer)
F1 - Do you have any managerial experience?
F1- What is L&T Power's gross revenue?
F1- What is the order booking of L&T Power?
M2- But the guy before you said that L&T Power's gross revenue is XXX crores!
M1- What is the paper presentation you had mentioned in profile sheet?
M1- What are its applications in real world?
M1- So you are from Kerala? Which part of Kerala?
M1- How many states are there in South India?
M2- What is L&T's perception on Climate Change?
Me- Silent for 5 seconds....
M2- okay, what is your perception about Climate Change? What is Climate Change?
Me- Well I am from Power sector & that too from thermal based power plants which adds to the global warming. I know that renewable energy is the way forward but in current scenario it is not possible to rely only on it. Atleast for the next 10-15 years we have to be dependent on coal based power plants.
M2- 10-15 means you should stop coal based projects from today. Its already too late....
Me- Not 10-15 years, it was just a rough number I gave. Minimum 20 years.
M2 (Sarcastically)- Okay, so now you come to 20 yrs....
Me- Yes Sir, minimum 20 yrs. Even Modi, has set a vision of 100GW of solar power generation by 2022, for which he has asked US to support. If you take the current scenario, it costs around 7Cr/MW generation for solar, whereas its just 4Cr/MW for coal based. The costs for solar plant is bound to go down with increase in demand & the manufacturing costs will come down. So yes renewable energy is the way forward & L&T has also setup a few plants in Solar.
M2- Where do you get the coal from, for the running plant?
F1- What is your opinion about the liquor ban in Kerala?
Me- Liquor ban is a good from a social point of view but I do not support the ban.
F1- Why? What are your reasons?
Me- Many people have invested a lot in this sector. Even the government had promised them an upgradation from 3star to 4-5 star provided they do so so things & one fine morning asking them to abruptly close isn't right.
M2 (With a very serious tone)- Do you know the problems that take place due this addiction? You have any idea? You are only bothered about the people who have invested money in this! What reason is this? (I could see M1, F1 giggling, I just felt that the stress part of the interview was about to start)
Me (with a smile)- Sir, its not like that. A lot of people earn their living through this sector. So it is affecting a lot of the lower middle class people too.
M2- (Serious tone)- If that's the case we should allow dacoits & robbery too. It is their way of living right so we should allow them to continue with their way of life. What logic are you using?
F1- Okay if you were the minister what would you do?
Me- (Laughing) Mam, I will get back to you, first let me just add a point. Obviously there was a lot of hue & cry when this ban was placed & there were a lot of discussions n all. There was a fisherman from Kochi who said on national television that it is good that the government banned liquor in Kerala. He said because of the ban he now knows that there is ganja available in market for 25 rupees, which is much cheaper & gives a better high. So Sir, I don't think banning liquor is the solution. A person with an addiction will find ways to attain it at any cost. Liquor is still available in Kerala in beverage shops, it has not been banned as such.
M2- Ok, what would you have done? Answer madams question.
Me- Maybe I would have tried banning liquor in a phased manner. First by banning liquor in 2 star hotels & close down some of the beverage shops.
M2 (Sarcastically)- See, again Rejeesh is supporting the rich. He can still have his liquor from 5 star hotels.
Me- Sir, what was the purpose of banning liquor in the first place? To reduce addiction among people? Well Sir, that is not going happen by banning liquor, no matter what you do.
F1- So what would you have done if you were a minister? Would you have passed the bill?
Me- No Madam, I would have opposed the bill & wouldn't have allowed it to be passed.
M2- Good! Any questions?
Me- No Sir. Just would like to know your names.
M2 - Faculty @ IIMB
F1- An alumna (from Kerala)
M1- Faculty @ IIMB
Me- Thank you Sir
M2- All the best!
M1- Take a cookie if you want....
Me- Sure, why not.
Felt a great sense of relief having completed it! I don't think my interview could have gone any better... Answered well most of the questions & also felt that they were convinced with my answers. The way it ended especially the "Good!" mentioned by M2 sort of gave me the impression that it ended well.
