Official Quant thread for CAT 2013

@ishu1991 bro could you please tell me how to tackle with this one.
@ishu1991 bro the set wala question answer is 62525 please tell me the approach how to do it

Find the Three digit number ?

it is known that the sum of digits is 17.
sum of squares of the digit is 109
If we subtract 495 from the number, we obtain a number consisting of same digits written in reverse.

I am not asking for this particular question, but i want to know the approach./ concept of solving these questions. Please help

Thanks in advance

a+b+c = 17
a^2+b^2+c^2=109
100a+10b+c - 495 = 100c+10b+a
99a-99c = 495
a-c=5

now u can do i guess...

c yar in as Sn increases no of elements increases
S1-1
S2-2
S3-3...............................THN S5-50
IT MEANS S1-S49
NUMBERS ARE 1+2+3+4+--------49 =1225
IT MEANS IN S50 NUMBERS ARE FROM 1226 TO 1275 U CAN ADD THEM

the sum of 1st and last term of Sn = n^2 + 1
for S50 = 50^2 + 1 = 2501
1st term of S50 be a, last will be a+49
a + a + 49 = 2501
2a = 2452
sum of all terms = 25[ 2452 + 49 ] = 62525

kindly have a look at this...http://mathworld.wolfram.com/AbsoluteDifference.html&http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Difference.html@bs0409 bhai answer kya hai uss question ka??
Answer is 9.
But according to me it shld be 6.......

Thanks @Logrhythm you joined some scattered peices for me.
can u solve it complete. that will be really helpful.

bhai but what @pratskool said is also valid...ek baar aap dekh lena pratskool bhai ke post ko..

a+b+c = 17
a^2+b^2+c^2=109
a-c=5 -> a=c+5
=> c+5+b+c=17
b+2c=12
now, 2c is always even
and even+even = even (12)
so b is even
also c

we can further proceed with hit an trial...
put c = 4
b = 4 and a = 9
but 9+4+4 =! 17

put c = 3
b = 6 and a = 8
8+6+4 = 17 (fits)
also 8^2+6^2+3^2 = 109 (also fits)..

hence 863 is our number...

How many right triangles with integer sides exist such that 1215 is one of the smaller sides?1. 82. 123. 104. 16
x^2 - y^2 = 1215^2
--> (x-y)(x+y) = 1215^2
x-y 1215
all factors of 1215^2 less than 1215...
so all factors of 1215 except 1215 which is 11...
and factors of 1215^2 which are not of 1215 but less than it...
5^2, 5^2*3^1,5^2*3^2, 5^2*3^3,3^6...
so 16

Q:N, THE SET OF NETURAL NO IS PARTITIONED INTO SUBSET S1=(1) , S2 =(2,3) ,S3=(4,5,6) ,S4= (7,8,9,10) AND SO ON . THE SUM OF THE ELEMENTS OF THE SUBSET S50 IS: ?????
S 49 end with the number which is sum of the numbers till 49 ie 49*50/2
S 50 starts with 49*50/2 + 1 = 1226 and has 50 elements...
so 1226 + 1226 + 1 ... + 1226 + 49 = 1226*50 + 1225 = 61300 + 1225 = 62525

@naveenkrs but isn't a lap defined (in this case as it is not a circular track)---as going from 0m to 50m as one lap and coming back from 50m to 0m point as the second and so on..?
I don't think so.

Why is that we have to consider factors less than 1215?

Sum => 6 + 35 + 56 + 36 = 133 ways it should be I guess?
calculation mistake it was :(
@iimSekar said:
Why is that we have to consider factors less than 1215?
because x-y is difference between hypotenuse and 1 side which should be greater than the third side,,, sum of two sides has to be greater than third side... 1215+y>x so x-y
@Redemption_CMAT said:
So it won't be 1/8 Sir ?133/1024 ?IMO - 144/1024 it should be.
yes it will be 144 /1024. In my first attempt i got the same answer , but the guy told its a wrong answer and again i have to think so came to that point of taking 5 as maximum & 2 as minimum .
