its 6 cases

Total ways in which they can sit is 4!, but out of those, we select only those where A seats to the right of S => 4!/2! = 24/2 = 12

Can the orientation of the chairs be changed ?

no here the twist is..dey r seated together..so ans is half to actual arrangement 6 :)

Actual arrangement is 4! right ? So 1/2 of it is 12 .. OR do you mean right = immediate right of S ? 😐

In a row there are 4 chairs. In how many ways can Avani sit such that she is always seated to theright of Shreyash?a) 6 b) 12 c) 10 d) 14 e) 16
total arrangements : 4!/2 =12

but she can only sit to the right of shreyas so 6 ways

Suzie covers 700 kms in 9 hours out of which she covers 300 kms by bus and remaining by car.She takes 20 mins more if she covers 500 kms by bus and remaining by car. Find the ratio of thespeeds of bus and car.
300/b + 400/c = 9

500/b + 200/c = 9 + 1/3

Solving, we get 700/b = 9 + 2/3 -> 700/b = 29/3 => 100/b = 29/21

100/c = (1/4)*(102/21)

Ratio = b/c = 51/58 ? 😐
@Cat.Aspirant123 bhai uska answer 33:40 hai kya ratio of speed of car and bus

Why 4!/2 ? Some other constraint is there ?

yar ye solve karne pe 33/40 arha

Multiplying the second equation by 2 and subtracting 1st from it will remove 400/c and we are left will 1000/b - 300/b = 18 + 2/3 - 9 , right ?

700/b = 29/3 ? .. Tum yahan solve kar do apna ek baar

i think i applied wrong logic....

but what i think now is if we fix avni and shrey as 1 unit.....now we can arrange thme in 3! ways..

wat say??

Well if we fix them then the total arrangements would be 3!*2! = 12 , but where is it mentioned that they are sitting together ?

Sitting to the right not necessarily means immediate right 😃

If Avani and Shreyas both have to be seated (and the other two chairs are empty for now) then 6. (3+2+1, basically).

12 it would be if we have to seat 4 people and Avani has to be immediately to the right of Shreyas.

Edited, immediately nahin hona chahiye.

@scrabbler Yah, I thought that there are other people too :splat:

yes you are absolutely correct....i assumed assumed immediate right...

I also had got 51:58 by some weird calculation. Can't find the paper on which I had done it though...was right here just now. Guess I am sleepy...

Edit: Sleepier than I thought. Searched frantically through 4 sheets of calculation for an answer which I had got orally. Bah :(

Ah yes. I couldn't find the paper for the simple reason that I had not written anything down

It can be solved pretty much orally like this:

Let's see the difference between the cases...if she covers 200 kms extra by bus instead of car she takes 20 min more. So every 100 km of bus takes 10 min more as compared to car.

Now...let's look at the first case: she covered 300 by bus and 400 by car in 9 hours or 540 mins. So if entire was by car it would be 30 min less = 510 and entire by bus would be 40 min more = 580. Hence ratio of speed of bus to car is 58 : 51.
