By putting values of k equal to 0 and 2, we get all the three values i.e x,y and z equals to zero.However if we take values of k equal to 1 or -1 ,then the three values can be not equal to zero.
k=1 -> y+z=0
k=-1 ->x+y=0

suppose at the time of marriage ages were x and y and suppose marriage happened n years back...Therefore, x+y=50 and
x+n+y+n+n-2=72 ..solve these two and you will get 8 as answer.

No no..Not that way....You forgot the number of years that passed....When the child was born, sum=54 as you said
and now sum=72 as you said...Suppose child was born x years back..so 54+3x=72 will give you x=6 and so marriage happened 8 years back

solving the problem without pen and paper
average age of parents when Kid was born = 27.
now we want to bring the average age of the family to 24. So we can look it in a way that whatever be the extra age of parents above 24 can be added to kids age and we keep doing this until kid's age becomes 24.
This means every year kid's effective age increases by 3 (i.e 1 yr of his own age + 2 years that he receives from parents)
In the year he was born he received 2*(27-24) = 6 years from his parents. => he needs to accumulate 18 more years. And this will happen in 18/3 = 6 years time after kid was born hence (6+2) = 8 years of marriage now.
