Official Quant thread for CAT 2013

3 horses A,B,C are participating in a race.
The probabilities of winning of each of A,B,C is p(a),p(b),p(c)..
now, the que is: what is the probability that either a or b or c wins.
is it p(a) + p(b)+p(c) ?
or p(a).p(b').p(c') + p(a').p(b).p(c') + p(a').p(b').p(c) ?
can someone kindly explain the different situations in which the above are appliccable

Any easy way......OA -a

Whats the logic- OA-22

a + b + c = 16 where a ,b,c >= 1 and a,b,c Frame it like 3 dices are rolled and in how many ways the sum can be 16 ? plz answer gurus

A and B Invests 10,000 and 20,000 Respectively. At the end of 6 months, B Withdraws 5,000 and again after another 6 months, B Withdraws 5,000. At the end of 1 Year, They Got a Profit Of 9999 Rupees.

Let N be a number in base 16,but contains only 3 zeros and 3 ones.Find the maximum number of zeros, when the number is denoted in base 2.

Does Binomial Theorem works only for numbers like (50 + 1) or (-1 + 90). I mean to say one of the number must be a multiple of 10 ? or even ( 23+1) Such numbers are valid ? Please Help.

Sixteen teams have been invited to play in the CAB Gold Cup cricket tournament. The tournament is conducted in two rounds. In the first round, the teams are divided into two groups. Each group comprises eight teams, with each team playing every other team in its group exactly once. At the end of the first round, the top four teams from each group advance to the next round, while the rest are eliminated. The second round is a knockout round, where the loser of each match is eliminated. The team that remains undefeated in the second round is declared the winner and claims the Cup.The tournament rules are such that each match results in a winner and a loser with no possibility of a tie. In the first round a team earns one point for each win and no points for a loss. At the end of the first round, the teams in each group are ranked on the basis of their points earned to determine the qualifiers advancing to the next round. Ties are resolved by a series of complex tie-breaking rules so that exactly four teams from each group advance to the second round.

what is The minimum number of wins needed for a team in the first round to guarantee its advancement to the next round is

Ajay, Bhanu and Chandu plan to travel from P and reach Q at 4:00 p.m. Bhanu starts exactly 24 minutes after Ajay started from P. Had Chandu started 12 minutes after Bhanu, all of them would have reached Q at 4:00 p.m. But before Chandu left P, he received a call from Ajay and was told to start immediately towards Q and at exactly the same time Ajay reversed his direction and travelled towards P. All the three of them meet at 3:24 p.m. at R (somewhere between P and Q). Each of them travelled with his own uniform speed.

At what time did Ajay start from P?

2:12 p.m.

2:36 p.m.

2:48 p.m.

Equations:

1) Quadratic Equation ax^2+bx+c = 0, has maxima = -D/4a at x = -b/2a

2) All polynomials of degree 1 would be a straight line. hence if a area under the curve is asked, solve for x = 0 and y =0 and we can get the two points and draw straight lines. This helps in elimininating some options

.3) if the Polynomial is given as ax^n + bx^(n-1) +...+ z = 0then sum of the roots (taken one at a time) = -b/asum of roots taken two at a time = +c/asimilarly it continues with alternate -/+ signs.

4) For Quadratic equations, if a>0, then the graph would be a parabola with opens upward and if a

but i am not getting answers for these questions from anywhere, Please give me some suggestion Thank you in advance 😁😁😁

100! when expanded, ends in exactly 24 zeroes in decimal system. In how many other number systems, when converted, 100! still ends in exactly 24 zero es?
