Official Quant thread for CAT 2013

Amartya banerjee has forgotten the telephone number of his best friend Abhijit roy.All he remembers is that the number had 8 digits and ended with an odd number and had exactly one 9.How many possible no. does Amartya have to try to be sure that he gets the correct no.

Correct me what I am doing wrong:
1st case: when 9 is in units place : 9^6 x 8
2nd case: when 1/3/5/7 is at units place and 9 at any other: 9^5 x8x4
3rd case: when 9 is at left most place and 1/3/5/7 at units place: 9^6 x 4

sums up to 140 x 9^5.
I know its wrong. I was able to solve it before. 😞

Is it necessary to go through the tutorial at the start screen, when we sit for the exam??

There are two groups of children (A and B). A certain number of chocolates are distributed among the children in each group. Each child receives the same number of chocolates. If 200 less chocolates were distributed among the children in A and 400 more chocolates were distributed among the children in B, the number of chocolates received by the two groups would be the same. If there were 10 less children in A and 20 more children in B, both the groups would have the same number of children. Find the number of chocolates received by each child in A.
