there are 5 math books,4 science books,3 literature books. How many different collections can a person make selecting at least 1 of each kind when all books are different.


approach 1...pretty simple (2^5-1)*(2^4-1)(2^3-1) ways as at least 1 of each kind is to be selected

approach 2....we first take out 1 of each kind to ensure that 1 of each kind is present in the collection.
That can be done in 5*4*3 ways. Now remaining books are merged as they are different.So it is equivalent to selecting 0 or more books from (5-1) +(4-1)+(3-1) books that is 2^9 ways..So total number of ways is 5*4*3*2^9

Puys plzz tell me why approach 2 is wrong??..1 is correct and straight forward..but why is two giving a different answer..Plzz clarify..I cnt see the difference.

eight women of eight different heights are to pose for a photo in two rows of four. Each woman in the second row must stand directly behind a shorter woman in the first row. In addition, all of the women in each row must be arranged in order of increasing height from left to right. Assuming that these restrictions are fully adhered to, in how many different ways can the women pose ?
