i think we cannot use that formula because balls are distinct ....

rhs=logbase2 (4^x +1)* ( 2+ logbase2 (4^x+ 1))
let logbase2 ( 4^x +!)= A
therefore, eqn becomes A^2+2A-3=0
Which gives x=0 as the solution.

yaar mujhe log function likhna nahi aata PG pe. main samjha sakta hoon.
@zuloo log functn likhne ki zarurat nhi.. jst let ur answers b xplaind or attach a pic which wil cnsist of ur solution(in the worst case)
