But, when x --> 0 then y/x is an increasing function, so we can't say that if we put x=1 that will give y/x as maximum
but u r not considering the eqn. i think the ans will be 2(sqrt6-1)
@iLoveTorres correct... I just finished solving it as well.. method please.

I + II + III + IV= 120 I + 2II + 3III +4IV = 227Minimise (II + III + IV) OR Maximise I Also, II + 2III + 3IV = 107Put, II = 0WE get, III = 1 and IV = 35Hence minimum number of students playing at least 2 games = 0 + 1 + 35 = 36 ?..
i guess there is a small calculation error in 2nd equation.
but nevertheless, i got the concepts cleared.

approach??i simply used the formula, area of regular octagon = 2a^2 (1+rt2)the figure will form a regular octagon of side 43/99a =43/99correct me if i am wrong.
but didnt use the octagon formula simply used algebric x-y eqn and the ans will be 73/99

It's nowhere mentioned that x is an integer. Put, x= 0.01 and your answer will change.

My question
86/99?

x + y + 43/99 = 1
x + y = 56/99

x^2 + y^2 = (43/99)^2
(x + y)^2 = x^2 + y^2 + 2xy
xy = 1287/99^2*2

area of octagon = 1 - 4/2(xy) = 1 - 2(1287/99^2*2) = 86/99...

PROVIDE SOLUTION FOR THE SUM no. "30" !!! :GIVEN IN THE LINK : http://snag.gy/4ryF9.jpg
let them make a chair/day , b ,c
a+b+c = 8
amar works for x days and rest tow for y days

ax + (b+c)y = 80
take a =5 , b+c =3 x =10
take a =6 , b+c =2 x =10

in any case OA x =10

okk.... but whichever way u do... answer should be same na. i'm getting in the range of .89-.91 ... that's why i asked. :mg:
anyway, let others try ... :)

your answer is for the maximum case. max will be .89.. for the solution look at @mailtoankit 's post

Yeah.. Edited! Newbie in solving orally! Not as perfect as @scrabbler

even if use the formula of regular octagon its coming .9xxx

Yes , the answer comes out to be 2(sqrt6-1) acc to me

the question is not about integer its abt x-1=0 bcoz any square can have min value of zero only . if u minimize (x-1)^2 hence maximize (y+2)^2 and maximizing the overall y/x.

yea... .91 without approximation.
.89 if you take approx of some values.

i got his method. :)
but max nhi h wo... area toh area h. there's no question of max-minimum! :mg:

Why don't you put x=0.01 and check the value of y/x and compare your answer!

86/99 be the ans

hmm getting bigger ans..

look if you consider it a regular octagon toh you can straight away do this 1-4*(1/2)*(13/99)*(43/99)
(99^2-1112)/99^2=9801-1112/9801=9689/9801~.98 how are you getting .91?

The point is since you are considering regular octagon your area will be maximum
