We need to maximise those failing in all four so for that we need to minimise the ones in Only 1 subject and Only 2 subject.

that is why you need to find the correct maximum value for III because when you maximise III, II( MINIMUM) IS found.. n I minimum cant be found under any case to the best of my knowledge

But then if III = 41 and IV = 37 as you calculated. With III = 41, None = 150 - 41*3 = 150 - 123 = 27 right ?

So, Total = 41 + 37 + 27 = 105 which has to be hundred 100 Sir. :)
So, we need to take it as 37 so that it totals up to 100. :splat:

a + 2b + 3c + 4d = 298
a + b + c + d + e(none) = 100

d = 37

a + 2b + 3c = 150
a + b + c + e = 63

put , a = b = 0

then c = 50 and e = 13(answer)

Before S, we have 18 letters and 10^4 combinations for numbers => 18*10^4 = 180000 combinations. ( - 18 for those having 0000 as one combination ).

Now, those starting with S =>
0 _ _ _ = 10^3 = 1000 - 1.
1 _ _ _ = 10^3 = 1000.
2 0 => 100
2 1 => 100
2 2 (0 or 1 or 2) ( 0 to 9) => 3*10 = 30.
So, 2230, 2231, 2232, 2233, 2234 => 5 more!

Total = 182235 - 19 = 182216 combinations.

if my approach is wrong as i said before answer should be 0as you stated NONE=150-3*50=0

also in my approach i got II(MINIMUM)=1
so NONE=150-3*41-2*1=25 plus no where i m assuming I(minimum)=0..

anyways if the person who has posted the question itself is saying it to be 13 toh i rest my case.

number using alphabets less than S = 10*10*10*10*18 - 18 = 179982

and with S = 2234

so , required answer = 179982 + 2234 = 182216
