She concluded the talk with ‘you design your destiny, so strive for excellence regardless of the outcome.’

HUMANS OF IMT HYDERABAD

A lot of kids have an idea of what they want to do when they grow up. When I was growing up, I had no idea about what I wanted to do in the future, but I had a clear idea about what I did not want to do. Become a teacher! As a shy reserved person, I knew that it wasn’t the right fit for me.

So when I started out with my Bachelors in Management course, in the first batch for that course in Rajasthan, I had no clue that one day, I would be the one teaching that subject. It didn’t happen all at once. After finishing my course, I worked in an NGO for a while. The work there was pretty satisfying, but it was not financially rewarding. So I knew it wouldn’t be something I would be able to do forever.

So even though PhD was not my idea of a way forward, I went for it, inspired by a few other members of my family who had done one before. And it is there that I got my first hands on experience with teaching.

After my PhD, a few of my peers and I went on to establish IMT Hyderabad! It was right here that I started teaching professionally. Beginning out, teaching was a little intimidating, as the students we were teaching were as old as us, or often, even older. But the connections we had with the first few batches was something special. As there was only a few of us teaching then, I think we knew each individual students a lot more personally in those days.

But it is also true that the way we connect with students has also changed. The power distance between the teachers and the students has gone down. Back then, there used to be a respectful distance between us. In fact, some students would even hesitate to ask doubts in the middle of class because they were too nervous. Today, the interactions have a more friendly tone. I often get requests to connect on social media before the students have joined, which is taking it too far if you ask me.

But I enjoy the interactions, as long as the students don’t cross any boundaries. There are still students who reach out to me for advice once they are in the industry, or to let me know something new in their field which they feel would be a nice addition to our curriculum.
Did you know that we were among the first employees of IMT Hyderabad when it was set up?

It all started back in my PhD days, when we were all pursuing one from IBS Hyderabad. You know who I’m married to, right? (laughs). I met Sourabh when we were in ICFAI, and we got married around then.

When IMT Hyderabad was being established, the Founding Director asked 9 of us who did our PhD from ICFAI if we wanted to be a part of the college. In fact, Nikhil, Nitin, Sourabh and I all did our PhDs from the same batch there, and Chakrapani was our senior from back then.

We used to do everything together back then. We lived in the same apartment complex, we used to drive to college together. And we must have watched every movie that came out at that time. Even now, we still get together, for little get togethers or our kids’ birthday parties.

And in our time here, it wasn’t just our student’s growth that we witnessed. It was that of the college itself. I have seen the campus evolve from a rugged campus, into the lush green one we have today. It isn’t just the campus though. From the course to the visibility and diversity, everything has grown since then. Especially the industry connect that we built over the years. I always feel a sense of pride when I look back and realize how much the campus has grown since then. We have all certainly come a long way.
If I had to pick one event to be the biggest change in my life, it was marriage. Sourabh and I got married back in our PhD days. At the time, we were both looking at arranged marriage proposals, and after each one, we would talk about the people we had seen that day, and discuss about them. Eventually, we realized that we get along better with each other than with any of them. The wavelengths just matched.

There were certainly a few eyebrows raised from extended family and such, with us being from different communities. But I think this was something I was equipped to deal with from a long time. My parents are from Kerala, but I was born and brought up in Udaipur. And I have been living in Hyderabad for the last 18 years of my life. And Sourabh is from Bengal, but was born and brought up in Madhya Pradesh. All of that made it a lot easier, and the fact that my parents were supportive made a big difference too.

So when I talk about diversity and inclusiveness in my classes, I’m not just talking about theory .I , for myself , see myself as an Idealistic Teacher. Having said that, I also see myself as the Flawed human being that I am. but I am also talking with respect to my personal experience. All you have to do to believe, is to take a peak at our worship corner, where Jesus Christ and Ganesha are set up side by side. And they don’t seem to have a problem with it. This is why I have a problem when I see religion used to divide people. I am a firm believer of the fact that humanity should come first, and everything else should come after that.

The best part of it all? The festival times. It goes from Onasadya one day, to Rakhi right after. I love cooking for big meals like that, or just cooking in new creative ways. And I love doing arts and crafts. In fact, my son often stops me from doing his projects, because I get carried away and try to do the whole thing on my own! I also enjoy gardening, and have steadily been making a garden of my own at my house.

I have also been trying to change things, working on things I feel like I could improve on I have also been trying to change things, working on things I feel like I could improve on. I have been trying to change how vocal I am about some things. After all, even though we say we love authenticity, people tend to appreciate diplomacy a lot more.
I have no advice to leave you with right now. I think there is so much advice around already. People love giving gyaan, but these days, it feels like nobody is willing to receive any.
I am looking forward to having live classes with all of you. Right now, it feels like just a couple of students holding the flag for the whole class. And often, you miss something as simple as someone laughing at a small joke you made. But the one thing that I am going to miss about online classes is sitting down and taking classes. But, okay offline all the way.
Even today, after almost 18 years of teaching, I still have the flutters during the first class, remnants of the days when teaching was the last thing I wanted to do. But the connections I have with the students, and the appreciation that I get from them, makes it all worthy of it all!
