Hello! Be forewarned, this is going to be a long post.
Having been a witness from afar, to all the drama that’s being played out on this page since the last one month or so, I am now compelled to write this piece to set things straight once and for all.
I have no affiliations with any institute whatsoever but I do admit that the only convert I have so far is from Rohtak (Thanks to big time messing up in sectional scores. So, Ranchi - slim possibility, TISS - let’s see what happens).
I don’t see why you guys can be so bloody entitled all the time! No bloody college in the country can guarantee you 100% placements! IIM Ahmedabad this year had their offers rescinded by the American research firm Gartner, cause of the Covid pandemic. Do you really expect the new IIMs to withstand this storm and stand firm when the big, old stalwarts even aren’t immune from taking a hit? Completely irrational and unrealistic expectations! Wow! Much wow!
And I keep seeing people here saying Rohtak is the least preferred option and baby IIMs like Nagpur and Vizag are doing better. I don’t know about Vizag but Nagpur, well, I can say I know quite a bit, I have been there.
You really think any college for that matter doesn’t at least to some extent fudge up their placement reports? What kind of a dream world are you living in? You expect a utopia out here? It’s not! You think Nagpur, Vizag or any other IIM or private B school in the country is a hallmark of transparency? Go ahead, join them! Let’s talk after two years and share our experiences on this very forum.
What I do have a problem with, is this selective slandering! As if Rohtak is the big bad villain of all B Schools and others are just meek angels in comparison.
I do appreciate the lady from IIM Rohtak herself coming on this forum and being a whistleblower, needs a lot of courage and integrity. Much kudos and power to you ma’am, thank you.
And I do admit that from the very onset of the admission process, it was quite clear that IIM Rohtak is on a money grabbing streak, but hey, don’t discourage people who against all odds are still gonna join Rohtak, it means so much to them, it might be their only shot at entering a coveted college. Stop with all the negativity!
Btw, it’s quite clear why IIM Rohtak would revert to such tactics though. Did you guys read the news article that MHRD funding to new IIMs would be stopped? When the government is cutting back on funding, how the heck are you supposed to survive?
I am not condoning IIM Rohtak’s actions by giving you this excuse, but I think it gives us some context at least to what’s happening, which you guys don’t care to research at all, and just go around sensationalising things.
Rohtak thankfully, at least, completed it’s campus construction in due time, before the funding was cut. Ranchi, Nagpur etc. don’t even have their own campuses yet, Nagpur has a five story apartment building like complex on one corner of VNIT campus, that’s all there is (yes, the one you see in the photos with IIM Nagpur written on a hoarding, that’s the only administrative building and there are classrooms and hostels on the ground floor beside it, nothing too shabby but it always feels like a makeshift temporary arrangement). They were supposed to be on their own by 2017-2018 and yet haven’t been able to do that. Ranchi is a different ball game altogether! 10 years without a campus, much wow! What the heck is the management doing? Where did all the money go? Why such delay in planning and execution?
And this is a part of a bigger trend, even TISS declared it has no funds to even pay salaries to its staff and keep the institute clean last year. Why? Cause the government has stopped all the funding! The government no longer funds eminent institutes! That’s the tragedy! Funding has been decreasing in the education sector year by year. That’s the bigger concern everyone should actually be having. I really do hope TISS is out of its woes now though, cause that’s one institute that really has contributed to the nation.
I am not here to idolise Rohtak or malign other institutes but just feel people on here don’t have the right expectations and expect the world out of these institutes that are not perfect. And guess what? No institute is perfect! No person is perfect! Are you Mr. Complainer, perfect?
About the sexual harassment allegations against the director, yes that’s the only part where I do feel like I am trampling on my own principles ( just to put it out there, I am a male, but believe unwelcome advances by men in positions of power are seriously uncool) and making a compromise that I wouldn’t otherwise want to make. But guys, when the former Chief Justice of India has sexual harassment allegations against him and is offered a seat in Parliament right after that, what the bloody hell do you expect in a country like this? Would you now say you would never go to any court in this country? That your faith in the judiciary is over? That you wouldn’t want to try IIM Rohtak if need be, in a court of law in this country, cause the CJI is accused of sexual harassment?
Directors will come and go, Chief Justices will change, governments and prime ministers will change, but the institutions will remain, and that’s what you should be investing in. An institute is largely made or broken by the students in it, not staff, not teachers, not directors, but students. Rohtak or not, any new IIM or college you join, there are no free meals served on a silver platter for you (unlike, in say BLACKIS, where they have carved out a niche for themselves over the years and rightly reap benefits from that). You are joining a new college? It will almost be like building a startup from the ground up. Be prepared to work hard and contribute your best to build the dream college you could not get into, so your juniors will enter a better college than the one you joined. If you are willing to make this effort, only then join a new IIM, otherwise don’t! No free handouts here.
From personal experience I can say, (having graduated from a top notch non-IIT government engineering college), and this might seem funny to you, but having a director with a shady image is better than not having a director at all. Do you know top-notch government institutes in this country (IITs, IIMs, NITs) sometimes function for months and years without any director? Do you know how detrimental that can be for the growth of the college? Do you know how difficult finding directors can be? When a poor guy is finally appointed, he is actually also the director of a couple more institutes, handling 2 colleges at once!
My alma mater, which is quite prestigious in its own right, was without a director for 5 years before I entered the college. I was lucky enough to enter with a batch when a new director was appointed. Do you know what happened in the preceding 5 years? Rampant corruption at every nook and corner, total indiscipline in the student community, multiple incidents of student suicides in a span of few months, a professor charged of sexual harassment, total mismanagement etc. This is what happens to the best of institutes, when they are left rudderless and without any leadership. Thankfully the college has recovered very well from that nightmarish dark phase now.
Coming back to the point, if you really place such a high emphasis on nothing but placements and money, and are not in it for the learning, educating and improving yourself, first and foremost. Then, maybe you shouldn’t invest in an MBA or any other kind of education at all, for that matter.
You have a problem with the way things are going on over here? Pease, happily go abroad and pursue an MBA! Let’s see how you fare there with this kind of entitlement mentality! Go to the biggest B-Schools in the world! First of all, I would like to see how many of you are accepted with no work experience. Go to Harvard, Stanford, Yale and see how much your college helps you in your placements officially!
There is no concept of placements in the western world. There is no such thing as a placement cell in college. Sure, there are job fairs, but you have to network, network, network and get a job for yourself. Then, pray your company finds you valuable enough to sponsor your visa and make a case for you in immigration department. I forgot to mention, you actually have to be enrolled in a STEM certified programme first to be eligible for job search for a few years, otherwise if you haven’t found a job for yourself already, you have 4 weeks after completing your degree, to pack your bags and come back to India (this is in the context of USA). And of course, add to that corona woes in the international market from this year onwards.
In IIMs, you have a dedicated placement cell, companies come to the college themselves to interview you, you don’t have to run from pillar to post to find opportunities for yourself, no visa issues, no need for part time jobs etc. How much more bloody spoon feeding do you need?
You can get a loan for 20 lakhs (unlike 30+ lakhs when you go abroad), which can be repaid in the next 10-15 years in small monthly instalments. No collateral required (unlike when you go abroad), you are not putting your parents’ house at stake here! Isn’t that wonderful? That really does take a lot of load off my chest, at least.
And I did check from other platforms and sources where the same issue has been raised. The number of students in the same predicament seem to be about 10% of the batch, which for me is not surprising. In fact, I think it’s nothing unexpected at all. The figures although not ideal are still quite good, imo. If you didn’t know till now, that in any placement reports of any college, ‘Number of students opted out of placement process’ is code for ‘number of unplaced students’, well, you have been living under a rock, please come out of there. (I did read somewhere that a few years ago, in an exceptional case, IIM K actually straight out stated that 4 students did not get placed, so go join IIM Kozhikode if you can, if you love transparency so much.)
Pull up your socks, mates! Time to be an adult! Stop babying around.

Footnotes:
This might just be my first and last post on PG, so I’ll just state my own personal comparison here:
IIM Kashipur - No better or worse than Rohtak. At least, Rohtak has location advantage. Come on guys, being about two hours away from Delhi-Gurgaon-Faridabad is like living right beside Silicon Valley. If this is not thought of as an advantage, then I don’t know what is. IIM Rohtak placecom, if you can’t leverage this geographical advantage for placements, then seriously only God can save you.
IIM Nagpur- Won’t say any better or worse than Rohtak, but Nagpur is generally a really peaceful and safe city.
IIM Vizag - Don’t know much about college, but Vizag is a really pleasant city. I actually might consider this over Rohtak.
IIM Raipur, Ranchi - No better or worse than Rohtak. (If you are considering HRM at Ranchi, that’s a different case altogether. Then, Ranchi HRM being a dedicated programme will obviously be better.)
https://thecatwriter.com/2020/05/22/how-to-choose-between-an-hr-program-and-a-regular-mba/
IIM Udaipur - Only new IIM to be in QS World MiM rankings. I would fall all over myself to get in here.
IIM Trichy- Not saying this is necessarily true for IIM Trichy, and I might be completely wrong, but it is not unheard of for national level colleges in TN to be teaching only in Tamil at times, without any regard for non-Tamil speakers. Extreme geographies in India, especially, far north and far south should always be avoided. They are always kinda radical and toxic, just a personal opinion.
BLACKIS are a league of their own, so out of scope of this discussion and so are baby IIMs not mentioned here so far, for they are far too new.
To the IIM Rohtak PR team, you guys are doing a real shoddy job of saving your college’s reputation. So much so, that a guy like me who hasn’t even joined the college yet has to write this up. At the same time, I understand, you are far more accountable to higher authorities and have to take every step calculatedly, whereas, I am free to say whatever I want, have no one to answer to. I feel you, but please up your ante. Wish you all the very best.
Adios, amigos. Over and out.
