hi
I am a fresh graduate(Comp Eng) who is considering on doing CFA in june 2009. I will have a years experience in the .Net world by june 2009.
How will doing CFA level 1 help me?
Will it bring oppurtunities in getting a god IT job in london for an financial firm(investment bank/hedge fund etc..)
Your advice would be immensely helpful.
This is something that has been discussed over and over again ..
There is no such thing as a salary range for L1 because no one will make a hiring decision just because you are doing the CFA program. It depends on your background .
To make it more simple from a recruiters point of view the salary they are prepared to offer will depend on :
1. Your Work experience ( if not 1 then 2)
2. Your Educational background
3. Your progress in the CFA course
In the above list 1>2 >>>>3 .With nothing to show in points 1 &2 you will not get any decent job till you complete all 3 levels .
For ppl with no workex /relevant workex point 2 becomes important ,then a L1 may land you a decent job -for ex I Banks taking IIT/IIM grads in profiles like Structuring/Equity Research so the hiring decision is based on your educational background and a L1 sets you apart from the pool of IIT/IIM ppl applying nothing more . The L1 in itself will do no wonders.
The L2 may land you with a KPO and L3 in a Front end position with a bank, but by the time you complete L3 you would most probably be in the finance field so point 1 becomes more important.
As regards someone with software exp passing L1 you sal will depend on the kind of role you are looking at .If you go in as a Analyst who needs to program a lot but also needs a little bit of fin knowledge then you command a good salary but if you move into a pure fin role then be prepared to start at the bottom in terms of salary and work profile unless point 2 is very strong.
The bottom line is CFA is not that useful for career changers but more useful for career enhancement . For a career change the oldest and most trusted tool is still the MBA.
Hi,
This question if for people who have already been doing CFA or completed their. I had contacted the ICFAI last week and they had told me that the CFA course will cost 25 k for the L-1. I would have to shell out 15k extra if i need traning classes . Now I want to ask all of you if these traning classes are important and would they be helpful. CFA is pursued like a part time course rite... so I am jus wondering about the quality of these trainig classes cos i dont wann waste money if the traning is not given properly like the other correpondace courses and if i can can manage CFA without classes . to give a brief background of my educational qualitification. I am a BCA graduate & Obtained an experience of 2 yrs in IT. I am avergae in math but good with economics.
Thanks
I took the CFA L1 exam yesterday at Mumbai centre. My comments about the exam papers and some suggestions are:
* morning exam had throw away questions on ethics. also other topics were manageable. most of the questions involved yes/no type answers and almost 80% of the paper was concept based. the trick is to remember all the concepts thoroughly. not much calculations required.
* break of 2 hrs. its always better to get something to eat from home. otherwise you'll have to spend a lot of time which you could have used to relax a bit.
* afternoon session was also on similar lines to the morning session. ethics was bit complex. FSA involved some calculations. rest of the paper was again concept based. overall moderate level paper.
* schweser seemed to be enuf for the preparation. there was no fight for the time as most of the questions were simply read and answer types.
* two back to back exams becomes tiring and u start feeling it in the last hour of afternoon session. so its always good to keep all the formula in mind which can save a lot of efforts in the last minute.
* overall exam went peacefully and CFA conducted it very well. the paper was in between easy to moderate level in terms of difficulty.
* ethics is the key. a lot of questions are based on subtle difference in the exact meaning of some terms such as fair dealing, conflict of interest, priority etc..
i have no clue about my performance but i know that i could have done better 😃
all the best to Dec aspirants....
do ask any questions related to the june exam. i'll be glad to answer them asap ..

Hello,
I am a B.Sc Computer science graduate and after graduation working in purchasing & supply chain in IT field for last 12 years. For the last 2 years I am trading actively in Indian Futures market and Forex.
I am working in Muscat now and doing my MBA thru ICFAI university.
I would like to make the career change in Investment banking which I like very much.
I would like to know from you all:
1. After completing CFA L1,L2 & L3, what will be the likely chance of me getting the jobs Investment banking. Or will I get only the entry level jobs.
2. As 4 years of investment decision making work experience required for getting the CFA charter, is it ideal to join in Investment banking entry level jobs now itself. So that by the time I finish the L3, I may have couple of years experience.
3. What entry level jobs we can apply for, so that it will be useful once L3 exam is completed.
Appreciate your feedbacks. Thanks a lot,

hi friends, I am Rahul, B.E. with no work ex, can i appear for CFA?
thanx in advance!
and how much time required to prepare for CFA fr guy lyk me who is fresher engg.
Hi Rahul,
You can appear for CFA, no problem at all... According US AIMR CFA institutue 12+4 equivalent of education is required to appear for CFA....
For your second query, being a fresher or not a fresher does not matter but do you have any financial knowledge or not that does matter for time preparation...
For a person who knows concepts of finance ideally 300 hours are required for L1 preperation.. and if you dont have financial concepts then somewhere around 350-400 hours would be requied according to me....
I hope this answers all your queries...

thanx alot for reply friend. now tell me is it ok if i start for june09 exam from dec08? or is it too early? plus please let me know some book which i can get in mumbai for basic reff. i belive some local indian authors book must be there. and do v need classes for it? i mean i knw nufn abt finance, so i thought classes may help. anyway thanx again c ya.
Hi,
Well ideally if you are free right now then you can start right now and give Dec'08 exams, as you have 5 months for preperation.....
In case you feel you are not prepared for such a short notice period then only you should think of June'09 exams....
When you register for the CFA exam you would get material from them... but usually students read from Schweser material... you can get it from
laxmi zerox centre.
opp mithibai college
Vileparle west
Mumbai
.Mr. Paresh 9819024256
Level 1 notes for Rs 1850/-
these are xerox notes.. orignal notes would cost you somewhere around Rs.12000... its your choice whether you want to go for the orignal or otherwise...
Start reading from these notes and if you feel you want some kind of formal training then there are Stalla classes in andheri which impart trainining...
But i feel for level 1 you can study on your own.. if you give some time and work hard..
Take care,,

Hi,
Iam seriously considering to pursue CFA from AIMR.I have these specific queries and any help would be highly appreciated
1)I have 3 years of experience in financial services industry(2yrs as insurance advisor in a Bpo and 1 year as an equity dealer with a local brokerage company.
2)Iam currently in my 3 year Bcom from IGNOU(distance education)
3)I have 3 certifications from Nse and 1 from multi-commodity exchange.
so can I pursue CFA eventhough i have 10+2+3 education and that too through distance education does Aimr recognise this eventhough I have required work experience.please guide me guys and thanks in advance
I got it from this guy ---Vishal 9899448948.I got the professional one in 3900 approx.
He delivered it to my place, the same day.
Or you can send a DD to the TI bangalore, they courier it to you free of cost --as they were telling me.
worthless SaysCan anyone tell me how to get hold of the cfa notes...I am from kolkata and cant find anyone in pg who is writing cfa..also no info of shops selling the notes
Hi,
Well CAT will be in November and CFA will be in December. If you can study for both then only apply for CFA, if you are opting for a job then studying for CAT and CFA would be difficult.
So if you are only looking for Cat'08 then you can take up a job and prepare for it or if you feel you can the combine studies of CAT and CFA along with job then you go ahead that way....
It all depends how much you can take on.. obviously the later decision would be difficult.. but then it again depends upon you.
If you get in to MBA finance and clear L1 in Dec'08 and L2 in June it could be the best possible thing for your career...
I hope i am able to address to your queries...
These are my views on your queries
