Guys I Will Be Starting My Mba Frm Singapore Next Year, Can I Register For Level 1 Or Any Person Of Indian Origin Is Not Allowed?

are the registrations open for the 08 exams

Variations of this question have been answered time and over again on different threads, however since you have taken the time out to compose such a long post and since after the exam I am relatively free I will try and answer to the best of my knowledge.

The answer to this question has to be general because it very much depends on the individual. For the sake of giving a definite answer I will say that simply passing a Level 1 will not get you any decent job in Finance. However a L1 coupled with your background may get you in.
For example an I Bank looking for a Quant Oriented position may shortlist an IIT grad because having done L1 would imply that he has basic fin knowledge and can quickly learn and adapt to the job.It would also show ones commitment and interest in the field.
But an ordinary grad who has nothing to offer apart from a CFA L1 should not expect any good offers.

In my own case I got interested into Fin way back during my IIT days.I worked with a Fin startup on campus and did lots of extra Fin courses in SJMSOM(we were allowed to take up one course of our choice every sem).

This exposure allowed me to get into a Quant profile in a Financial Services KPO that time I had not even registered for the L1.8 Months down the line
after passing the L1 in Dec I moved to my present job of a Quantitative Analyst with a French Hedge Fund.
Did the L1 help me get the job? I don't think so I probably would have made it without the L1 ,but it certainly assured my employers towards my commitment to the field.

A CFA L1 will add a little spice to your resume nothing more but what it will do is to help you get a better understanding about the Financial services industry and that will allow you to make a better informed choice about the kind of career you want.

A L2 with an ordinary background may get you an entry level job in Financial Analysis with some KPO.A L3 with some relevant work ex would allow you to enter into a top I Bank/Hedge Fund.

An MBA and a CFA are not competitive but complementary. An MBA is a general Business degree whereas a CFA is specialization in financial analysis.Yes a lot of ppl do the CFA after failing to get in the IIMs but a lot of IIM grads also do the CFA and so do a lot of people who did not take the CAT in the first place!!! It has nothing to do with the CAT but everything to do with your own career aspirations.

Naukri,Monster, timesjob et etc.Once you have a good profile just put up your profile and soon you will be hounded with calls from placement consultants :)

I do not know about Stalla but I found Scheweser to be pretty good for both L1 and L2 .Of course you will feel Schweser does not cover everything in detail but in you start doing that you will never end up completing the course.

Only you will be able to make this decision and probably after actually working in such a profile. In any case Finance has dozens of possible work profile you may hate one but love the other.

Yes an IIM A,B,C can get you into Sales and Trading .

no, registrations are not open for indian candidates yet. possibly it won't be open till court gives a verdict in favour of CFAI

I came to know yesterday about the tussle between ICFAI CFA and CFA (US). I am really angry at ICFAI for this debacle. According to me, CFA (US) is much much more credible and valuable degree than ICFAI CFA, about which there are doubts if its even recognised by UGC or not. (I read a news article a couple of days back about a student who won a case against ICFAI about ICFAI's claims that its recognised by UGC. Court ruled that ICFAI is NOT recognised by UGC.) I am tempted to use really foul language against ICFAI due to this.

i'm no CFA L1 holder but what i have heard clearing L1 only doesn't guarantee u a very good job.. but yes, it can give u a start with a FIN company with a mediocre salary. If u've some work-ex or an MBA along with L1 then your chances become pretty good.

clearing just L -1 wud hold diferent meanings for people with different backgrounds.it wd really help a person from an engg background to show his interst in finance wheras for a normal graduate, it wont give that great a punch to his cv... so it depends ...

boss!!
IF U MOVE TO us UL GET A JOB WHICH IS NOT THAT WELL PAID AS l# GRADS..TRY DOING mba.INFACT ENTER mba WITH L1..THEN DO L2 IN MBA AND L3 AFTER HAVING 2YEAR OF EXP AFTER MBA..UL SEE THE REAL VALUE THAT TIME OF CFA..
U GET JOBS OF ANALYST ,ASSOSIATE JOBS..INTIALLY IN ibanks..U GOT TO BE FROM TOP NOTCH INSTITUTE..

how about the oppurtunities with this
3 years non financial work ex + CFA L1 + CFA L2 (by then it will be 4.5+ years of work ex assuming appearing L1 in june2008 )
.. is MBA a must to complement CFA ... if no other financial background/ degree is there to support it.

hi,
CFA is not a shortcut to a fatter pay package. CFA and MBA degrees can't be compared simply because they are meant to be different. MBA is 2yr full time course which teaches variety of things like decision making skills, mastering business application along with the knowledge in finance (if ur major is in finance). While CFA is a certification program which gives a good base in gaining knowlege in finance. So the ideal combination is to go for both MBA (fin) and CFA.
one more thing, as far as package after CFA is concerned.. if u pass all 3 levels in CFA then a very good package is guaranteed (150k USD approx) but you won't be getting a very good deal with L1 or L2 alone.

this is my personal opinion and is not biased bcoz i'm doing my mba.. 😃 i got this from various ppl i have contacted..

Hold on right there!
Currently, there is a Delhi High court stay on administering the CFA exam in India..Indian citizens who had already applied for the December exam can appear for the exam...but not in India..People are flying to Nepal and SriLanka for the same...
Correct me if the situation has changed...
All this means that Indian candidates will not even be allowed to apply for the June exam...unless of course the legal system of our country eventually dismisses ICFAI Tripura's claims and permits CFA (USA) to legitimately and smoothly conduct exams in India...
