Let's be objective here -

What are the govt jobs that would surely require CFA?
Govt departments - No
PSUs - No
Other govt departments - No
Retail PSU Banks - No
Treasury department and Investment Banking divisions of PSU Banks - Yes

Of these...
Do they necessarily require CFA charter for jobs? - No
Is CFA charter a nice qualification to have? - Yes
Does CFA charter make you more eligible for the right kind of jobs - Definitely Yes

Hope I answered your question.
Leobhai thanks for the clarification

I have an exp of nearly 3.5 Yrs in manufacturing sector..Have thought of giving CFA this Dec as i wanted to move towards finance sector . Would be giving GMAT at a later stage . In case i finish two levels after say 3 yrs , while still working in Manf Sector , would it be possible to shift to finance sector then with the help of CFA ??

By that time you would have completed approx 6.5 years in manufacturing sector. Very tough to shift to core finance after such a long work exp in non finance domain..

you would not be able to justify the shift in domain.. if you really want to shift to finance sector then I guess you should try to change your profile now itself and CFA would provide boost to it at a later stage..

haven't seen people hiring for finance jobs on the basis of CFA L2 only..

How goood is CFA for a career in academics ?

The question should be "How good is a person for a career in academics" or for that matter any type of career. CFA or any other qualification needs to be a knowledge-enhancement activity. If the person is treating any degree for the value of the degree and not for the knowledge, I doubt he is good for academics. Not that people like that do not exist or flourish. But, if you really want to go high in this profession, try to treat CFA or any other qualification for the enjoyment it brings in learning.

On a practical front, UGC or any other body in India does not recognize CFA. Many US colleges also do not "bother" about any certifications like CFA which they consider very "low in detail". PhD and published papers / research are the only benchmark if you really want to make your mark felt.

You had mentioned earlier that you wanted a break in the private sector (and hence the need to do CFA) - has the focus changed ?
@leolazer

focus has not changed but it seems after 5 year teaching experinces noone is saying i will be accepted in corporates. Lets see L1 result coming on Jan 22 .
