I have a query on behalf of my brother. He has done a course in Financial Planning from IIFP (I think). He got a job in sales in a company which he has to give up after three months as he was not able to complete his targets. I want to know whether CFA can help him. He was doing CWA, but couldn't clear it. He is not good in mathematics but is good in Economics and Accounts. Please help.

After my graduation , even I was thinking of going for 1 YEAR financial courses from IIFP , **** , ICOFP etc etc etc

But I didn't !!

I 'll suggest your brother .. that if he has interest in ECO ... apart from CFA .. he can fill DSE -DU for post-Graduation !!

CFA is a degree tougher then CWA ..!!

So.. watch your step ... !!

He cannot take admission in MBE-DU as he has less than 50% in graduation. He did his graduation through distance learning from DU as he was preparing for CWA. But he lost both of them.

You can always suggest him to apply for bank PO. Altho the package is low in the beginning years, his profile will become really good and then he can switch to a leading private bank at a decent salary.

Its one of the ways to rise up to management positions without becoming a sales professional.
CFA etc are really difficult and if not backed with a MBA or Btech from a good institute, people who have cleared CFA L-1 end up starting in brokerage firms in not decent profiles.

I think he would be eligible for Bank clericals only because Bank PO requires atleast 55% marks.

If I clear Level 1 CFA in June-2011 attempt and assuming that I get IIM calls in CAT-2011, will a CFA Level 1 clearance fetch me any brownie points as far as final selection procedure is concerned?


It depends on how well you answer the questions in your interview, as in the interviews you would be expected to have a sound finance knowledge after clearing L1.

So L1 or not, brownie points depend on how well you justify your extra prowess during the interviews

Some profiles like Equity Research etc. are relatively easy to get. However you may or may not find it interesting. So it depends on your interests.

A Hedge Fund Manager gets a lot of money but that's not an entry level position. It will take many years to reach that position.
