Hi Puys...need some info wrt CFA. I'm Vandan, techie by profession. I am planning to have a career shift from IT to Non IT background. I have a good amount of interest in the Finance domain. Though an expert, thru external resources I have a good awareness in the finance domain . I have few queries which I would like to be answered before I make any move and enroll myself for CFA.
1) Being an Engineer and considering myself as no vice in this domain, is it necessary for me to read external resources like business mags and understand the market scenario's in a much better way before I make an attempt to enroll?
2) Does CFA as a course provides more insight to the Finance sector then majoring in Finance??
3) Lastly, how much effort do one needs to put to clear the exam.
Hoping to hear from you puys!!!
Cheerio

Well to clear CFA you need not read any business magazines the CFA material is quite comprehensive...... But after having reading the CFA material, the mags will make more sense..... thats what I felt.....
2) Does CFA as a course provides more insight to the Finance sector then majoring in Finance??
I havent done a majors in Finance, I am an Engineer...... But my friends who have done MBA, tell me that CFA is more indepth than what you do in MBA (Finance)....
3) Lastly, how much effort do one needs to put to clear the exam.
Well this varies from person to person........ But for Level I, I think 3-4 months of quality time should be enough even if you dont know anything of finance.... PM me for more information Hope this helps.....
Is there a time boundation within which we have to complete the CFA certification (Getting chartered as well) Like in CFP one needs to give the exams and get the relevant 3 years work ex within 7 years (fron the date of registering for the first exam)

from which site can i come to know whether cfa level1 dec09 exams will be held in India or not?
CFAI will publish on its own website whenever there is any updates regarding this.
Usually the case keeps on struggling for next and next hearings .... and the next exam date arrives. Since last two times, the JUNE examinatations are being TEMPORARILY allowed in India just a few days (weeks) before the actual examination, and December exams were not allowed last year in India (and speculatively, it won't be allowed even this time if the final judgement doesn't come before that) !
So, be prepared to sit for the exam outside India this December ....
Before starting with level 2 i need to get some insight in Portfolio management. Level 1 was too basic. I am currently reading corporate finance by damodaran. Its an awesome book.

IT no longer interests me...i am looking to a career shift in finance...have plans of MBA in mind from a premier bschool! now, if i am unable to make it to a premier institute i will not go in for an MBA...in that case will a CFA help me to shift over to the finance domain? what are the prospects after i finish my L1? will that give me enuf leverage to shift over to finance? looking forward to hearing from you, puys!!
