Need some Opinions on CFA

yeah I am. actually scored an abysmal 92%ile in CAT '08

sanjana cat Says
@vivek varendra sir, u told that preparing CFA level 1 side by side along with CAT will depend on my abilities but if i am planning a career in finance then before doing mba won;t the CFA exams claering add value to my career?

well CFA and MBA are different and complementary. If you are already working in Finance, the CFA charter would add a lot of value. Even if you are an MBA, pursuing the CFA charter would give you an edge over other candidates. You dont need any work ex to start pursuing the CFA charter. But to get the CFA Charter you would need 4yrs of work ex in Finance profession. FOr more info, I would advise you to visit CFA Institute Home and read this thread from the beginning.
Here is the link to CFA Institute fee page:
Fee Schedule

There is a one time registration fee and subsequent exam fee. All the study material is included in the registration fee(for all three levels). But calculator, you need to but yourself separately. Two Calculators are permitted in the exam - Texas Instruments BA II plus (professional as well) and Hewlett Packard 12C

Usually the study material provided by CFA Institute is considered bulky, so many candidates refer either Schweser or Stalla notes which are available at esnips.com in the form of ebook pdf's.
You can also find addresses of book shops in this thread where you can purchase their hard copies.

You should go through the CFA Institute website in detail before you sign up for an exam so that you know about the course and exam well.

Thanks

Does the $990 fee include test fee for all levels and study material for all the levels ? or do we have to pay and register separately with $990 each time after passing each level and again pay for study materials???

please reply ASAP...

Hey everyone!

I'm an undergraduate Indian student (Freshman year) at a US University; And I'm currently pursuing a dual major in "Computer Science and Engineering" and Business Economics. I recently happened to stumble upon this forum and learnt about the CFA. I had a few questions- and I'd be really grateful if you people could help out a newbie like me!

1) Am I eligible to take the CFA examination? I have completed 1 year of my university course and have worked as a CA (junior level) for a firm in Delhi for 4 years previously (after school hours- full time employee though).

2) Is it advisable to do the CFA at this age? (I'm 18 now) And will it really boost my job options and a fetch me a higher salary? (Considering that I have a semi-commerce background).

3) Is it really possible to complete each of the three levels in less than 400 hours?

4) I currently have the Schweser notes from a senior (2008 edition). Would these be sufficient for prepping for the examination? Could you recommend any further reading- or other resources? Are the TBs by CFA Institute particularly helpful?

5) Would any of you (in or around Delhi) be willing to share/sell your CFA notes, calculator and resources? If so, please PM me with the details.

6) The policies require me to have a minimum combined experience (on-job and education) of 4 years. What sort of jobs qualify for the work experience? Do I qualify?

7) Any advise you have for me! :)

Thanks a lot in anticipation, everyone. I know I seem to be slightly (no- VERY) out of place in these forums, but I really do want to try to get the CFA before I get out of college. (Already spending a fortune on my Bachelors Degree- so yeah- want to make the most out of it) Please don't criticize the kid for being overly ambitious! :)

Thanks again!

Out of those 990, 390 is one time registration and for every level you need to pay 600 bucks Check this

The next deadline is August 21st, so u can wait till August and then decide, and the last deadline is some where in Sept but you get charged 300$ extra, so August 21 st is wat u need i guess
And there are no limited seats as such, u just pay the money and write

If you check cfainstitute.org - it is mentioned clearly that for applying the exam you should have 4 year undergrad education or equivalent. I believe you should give yourself sometime before enrolling for CFA and other exams.

2) Is it advisable to do the CFA at this age? (I'm 18 now) And will it really boost my job options and a fetch me a higher salary? (Considering that I have a semi-commerce background).

Age is never a factor to read any course - no matter what it is...Buffett started investing at an age of 12. However, everyone dosent have Buffett's shoes. Yes taking CFA will enhance your chances of getting into good firms of your interest, however, it does not guarantee that.

3) Is it really possible to complete each of the three levels in less than 400 hours?

I know few who spent less than 400 hours for each level, it depends where you are working and how much you correlate yourself with CFA curriculum.

4) I currently have the Schweser notes from a senior (2008 edition). Would these be sufficient for prepping for the examination? Could you recommend any further reading- or other resources? Are the TBs by CFA Institute particularly helpful?

Schweser is sufficient for taking CFA exam...every year there are minor adjustments in the course. Check out ethics section for additions and deletions (however you may find additions and deletions in other sections as well

thanks for your reply, vivek! really helpful. :)

"Have a U.S. bachelors (or equivalent) degree
Or be in the final year of your bachelor's degree program at the time of registration
(Note: education information must be updated before progression to Level II)
Or have four years of qualified, professional work experience
Or a combination of work and college experience that totals at least four years."

That's the requirements according to the CFA website- it says "four years of qualified, professional work experience". So since I've already been working for four years, do I not meet the requirements? What sort of "qualified" work meets the requirements?

Another question- does the 4 years of experience required to be a charterholder have to be AFTER you clear the exams or can it be before that too? Basically, does my previous work-ex qualify?

Thanks again in advance!

Your work exp should qualify and will be counted once you certify that you have a professional work exp which can be verified with supporting documents. You need to provide documentary proof to CFA institute while requesting charter after you complete L3.

Several bankers / traders take up CFA after 3-4 years of work exp, which is taken into consideration by the Institute while awarding charter to candidates. Hope this answers your second question.

Cheers,

from where we can get information regarding the test centre for the dec09 level 1 exam

yes me going for cat and cfa in dec09
but i hope date should not match..
because of ol exam in cat this year this might be little late

I took the CFA L1 exam yesterday at Mumbai centre. My comments about the exam papers and some suggestions are:
* morning exam had throw away questions on ethics. also other topics were manageable. most of the questions involved yes/no type answers and almost 80% of the paper was concept based. the trick is to remember all the concepts thoroughly. not much calculations required.
* break of 2 hrs. its always better to get something to eat from home. otherwise you'll have to spend a lot of time which you could have used to relax a bit.
* afternoon session was also on similar lines to the morning session. ethics was bit complex. FSA involved some calculations. rest of the paper was again concept based. overall moderate level paper.
* schweser seemed to be enuf for the preparation. there was no fight for the time as most of the questions were simply read and answer types.
* two back to back exams becomes tiring and u start feeling it in the last hour of afternoon session. so its always good to keep all the formula in mind which can save a lot of efforts in the last minute.
* overall exam went peacefully and CFA conducted it very well. the paper was in between easy to moderate level in terms of difficulty.
* ethics is the key. a lot of questions are based on subtle difference in the exact meaning of some terms such as fair dealing, conflict of interest, priority etc..

i have no clue about my performance but i know that i could have done better 😃

all the best to Dec aspirants....

do ask any questions related to the june exam. i'll be glad to answer them asap ..
