Hi ppl,

I am looking for guidance and mentoring for my career.

I am Mechanical Engineering Graduate who shifted to Software Engineer when i got the

oppurtunity. I did so in college and I have been working in IT industry for past 3 years. I have a good academic background and have performed well in my job. I have always been invoved with IT for a financial services company and have devloped a reasonable understanding of Banking/capital markets domain.
Going forward, i am looking to pursue an MBA. I am interested to move to business consulting leading to more involvement in strategy in future, while utilising the knowledge that I have gained in IT/Finance fields.
What specialisation should i be pursuing?
I am looking to work for one of the big 5 consulting firms in future, thats where I want to be.
I am planning to apply for MBA in US to some of the best business schools, what chance would i stand? I plan to write my GMAt soon and quite confident of clearing 700.
I would appreciate if someone could guide me on this.

Thanks,
Anand

Well said Born2Lead !!

Please post specific close-ended questions to elicit better responses.

Arun

Hi,

I thought that i did post the questions but let me re phrase anyway

1. What specialisation should I pursue.
(I have noticed that MBA in US has many majors and minors that yuo can choose from. One of them i want to choose is strategy. If there is some thing to do with IT'll choose that but lot of good B-schools don't have a separate IT major...
I have noticed that most ppl who do go into consulting choose marketing & Strategy... I am not interested i picking marketing...

2. What are my prospects for the top B-schools??
my Acad GPA is approx 3.9(B.e. mech) , 3 yrs work ex (IT industry) GMAt not yet written, lets assume 700. Do i have a chance for tier -1, or should i apply to some tier 2 schools?
any suggestions for the b-schools?

3. If someone has applied for US mba, or already pursuing it, i need lot more info and assistance.

thanks,
Anand

(1) There are various kinds of consulting and I have never known (to the best of my knowledge) the consulting firms to pick up on basis of your specialization. In anycase, I think the day of "specializations" are over and it is more a mix of which electives you take up during your second year of study.

Try getting in touch with alum of these instis who are currently placed in jobs of your interest and speak with them. I know of McK consultants from the ivy-leagues but I know for a fact they didn't have any *specialization* just grew in the area of their background (this guy was a civil engineer who specialized in Real Estate)

(2) Your stats match Arboreal Tarantula who is definitely Ivy League material. Does it ensure your admission as well ? Well, unfortunately you cannot quantify such things as there are a million things that go into the admission process. So I reckon you need to spend more time doing research on sites like www.businessweek.com/bschools before you can have an idea of it.

(3) Good idea to synergize with people who are applying, keep searching the threads here and PM like-minded people (BTW, I am not planning for an MBA in the near future)

HTH,

Arun

2. What are my prospects for the top B-schools??

If there is one person who can give u an answer to that.. then he would be sitting on the TOP floor of the tallest building in NY making easy $$. Sadly nobody can answer that, pal. 😃

Check out the link Arun has given u & do a lil bit of research & see if u have the passion & zeal to reach the top. 😃

Cheers!

I guess time will tell if I do have what it takes. Somehow I have a feeling that I do.
Anyways for me its not a question of money, power or position. Its about the challenge. I know it sounds bit cliched but its true and I have realised this recently and since then I have been much happier and confident.
btw I started my own blog abt my MBA/life pursuits

if u have a sure about that you do have the required skill sets to make it big, stop wasting time to take opinions from others. Do, what you feel is right.

Best person to make judgements about a person can be made by the person himself. respect and trust your own instincts and you would find your self at the top of the ladder you have aimed to climb.

Thanks for this.
More or less decided to go for it.

Igmoring the fact that this thread has been discussing the problem of anand rao till now and just going by the name of the thread I want to ask certain things...Not exactly mentoring for my career.. but to some extent yes thats what i need

I am going to complete my graduation this year in MAY. Will give CAT this year again
(my second attempt) In my first attempt I had applied to IIMs only and no other CAT affiliated college. Most probably will be doing the same this year....
The fact is my dad is too keen.. read that tooooooo KEEN that I give GMAT this year and go abroad for my MBA. I havea lot of work experience, I have been working while doing graduation.. Just because I wanted to have work experience not exactly to quote it in my appplication form..coz I cant do that maybe because it was prior to my completing my graduation.

Will GMAT help me?I mean can I get into some real good Bschools even if I am a fresher..My academic background has been good...lots of extras to be quoted too..Again will it help me..now at this stage how beneficial will an MBA degree from a foreign university help me... or should I be concentrating in CAT and other MBA entrance exams to get into a bshcool here in India...

Pooza

There is a great post made by Baba Yaga, check it out!! - http://www.pagalguy.com/cat/showpost.php?p=158797&postcount;=28

Now, coming to ur query - 😃

I fathom u are somewhere b/w 20-22.. correct me if u are wrong. There is no age limit when u are trying for MBA abroad but u will be facing a lot of competition from people with mega work exp ... Also from people who are very sure where they want to go in life. If u are looking at the TOP MBA programs, this might become an issue unless you have brainstormed about ur career goals & interests. Also, when we talk about work ex, the quantity alone is not paramount. The quality...with regards to the company u worked for, the responsibilities u had etc etc. But if u are looking at MBA from the 2nd tier or 3rd tier, then the challenge automatically comes down. 😃

One great advantage we have is - We are Indian women which is considered a minority. So, if u can brew up some great essays, then th going might not be that difficult. Pl tell ur dad that the average age for MBA abroad is 27-30 as thats when the school feels that the student can constructively add value to the school & viceversa. :)

Yes u can. This year, there is one 20 yr old guy who has been waitlisted at Wharton. 😃 Its all about how u portray urself in the application. If u are able to top it off with a sexy GMAT score, then, it will be a good ride

Enjoy......

Simbaaaaa

Hi Simba

That was quick. Thank you. Its infromative and most imprtantly exactly what I wanted to know.

Coming to the work experience I have..
I have 30 months of work experince.Stopped working last year in december. :)

And in IIMDC I worked for 24 months with decently good responsibilities.. In NMDC though I wouldnt say responsibilities were that high..But wasnt bad either ;)
I worked for 6 months in NMDC....
Rest coming to my essay and GMAT score lets see what I can do with it. My dad wanted to send me this year....I mean this session itself..I didnt have the minimum qualification needed He realy wanted and wants me to get my MBA done from a foreign University.

Thank you once again Simba...its so sweet of you :)

Pooza

My age : you got it right am 20+ not 21 yet 😃

I am not disagreeing with Simba but I think its good to take a reality check after your exams get over. Maybe you could go ahead and book your GMAT dates and start prep in earnest. A 5year validity of the scores ensures that you have a monkey off the back at the earliest. Do some quality research on what kind of profile you would present to the admission committee. Use the forum and other resources on the internet for this. On a personal front, I can chip in with some pointers too. But I think its absolutely imperative that you do independent research on the Bschools and how well it would fit into your plan of things.

Arun

Hi Arun,

Yeah you are right...Most importantly my exams getting over

On a personal front, I can chip in with some pointers too

I will need that :)

But I think its absolutely imperative that you do independent research on the Bschools and how well it would fit into your plan of things.

Right again . I am going to do all that once my exams are over

Do some quality research on what kind of profile you would present to the admission committee.

This is important too. I will try getting all these things done as soon as my exmas are over :)

Thanks

Pooza
Hi pooja,
Attend the MBA Fairs and Admission meets that are reguallary held. That gives you a lot better feel of the school ideology and "Wht they want" stuff.. i have been doing this for the last year and believe me its really worth .

I feel that all Us Schools have an ideology of their own , Like MIT Sloan emphsises Innovation. Stanford is all about Leadership(that too measurabe in numbers). Babson is all about creativity and Entrepreneurial thinking and like wise.

Besides B shools in Us have their own meanings of qualites. Pay close attention to what the schools is looking for. Try to locate schools that match u r values and asiprations.

Niketa.

Nice to see that this thread is helping others as well and not just me.
I have done some research and found that most B-schools have a minimum admission requirement of 2 yrs full time work ex after completing graduation. (you can find this on the admission requirements page on the school website)
Personally I have close to 3 yrs work ex and which would be abt 4 yrs by the time I fall 2006, but I still feel that I am on the younger side when it comes to age and work ex, which would surely have an impact on my chances for admits.
The median age in most B-schools while joining is abt 27-28 with the median work ex being abt 5 yrs!!

Hi anand

Well its true that Top B-Schools do need work ex.However wht is matters more is the quality of work experience than the number of years. Some ppl with great extra curriculars and good vision get admitted even with 0 work ex.

B Schools just dont admit tech guys and Financial consultants and laywers. There a wide range of professions represented there including writers, painters, social workers.
Wht the B-Schools want is wht and how can u contribute to their program. 2 -3 yrs work ex is not less. All that is needed is to build a great story from the work ex.

Cheers

InBlue.

Hi Inblue,

I agree with you on that. Both quality and no. of year are important. You need to prove some managerial and leadrship skills and most often you dont get such kind of exposure within the first 2 years. My post was in response to Pooza, who i think doesnt have any full-time work ex. There is a minimum work ex req. of 2 yrs in most B-Schools
