Hey guys,

I have got unconditional offers for MSc Finance from Lancaster University and University of Strathclyde. Frankly, i still have'nt made my final decision although i am tilted towards Lancaster because of its 6* rating.

My Background:

25 months Work Ex
BBA Hons.
GMAT: 680
Good Extra curr.

I'm sure a lot of us are headed for UK this year. Lets use this thread to know each other better and discuss matters like par time work, Full time work prospects, SEGS scheme(1 yr visa extension after PG course), pre departure details, accomodation and anything useful.

I request the seniors to pitch in with their views and enlighten us.

Thanks

Hi,

I have been researching abt MSc as a study option for last few days and was desperately trying to get in touch with somebody who's already game for it.

My profile in brief:
Graduation: Chemical Engg (1998-2002)
PG: MBA Finance (2002-2004)
Work ex: Reliance Energy Ltd. (2 yrs)
Big 4 Consulting firm (for last 3 months working on power sector)

I would like to know the whether the MSC programmes are well suited for study post-MBA?

Thanks

While I do not know your plans on why MSc, I would strongly suggest to consider an MBA in UK instead. I know of MSc students from UK who struggle to get a job - not because they are not good, but simply because they do not get a work permit from employers and their MSc does not help in getting the HSMP visa. MSc and MBA in UK would still mean 1 year investment (though MBA is a bit more expensive).
Good luck
Sandeep

I would like to make a correction that may be very significant to many who are contemplating an MSc in UK.
The visa requirements to work in the UK have been recently made very easy by the change in the requirements for SEGS scheme (Science & Engineering Graduate Scheme). The following change appears on website of Home Office:
Those who commence a Master's or PhD course on or after 1 May 2006 will be eligible for SEGS regardless of their course of study

This means that for most of you who are considering an MSc route in UK, the provision would enable you to work in the UK for 1 year after completion. At that stage, you could then consider the following options unless you intend going back to your own country:
- HSMP - switch to HSMP if you can qualify on the criteria then
- Working Holidaymaker - say that you have spent 1 year studying followed by 1 year of work and have not had the opportunity to see and enjoy UK. So get the WHM visa to enable you work for 1 more year and then try for HSMP.

However, please do remember that this suggestion is based on "here and now" and we would not know how the laws get changed in future. So be aware of the chances that exist in every such option. Good luck.

hey sandeep
thanks for the info,it could be of grt help for ppl who are planning for msc in uk.
but why is this scheme called science and engineering scheme?

is this provison for all the students who take up any course say finance or
is it for only those students who take up msc in some kind of science or engineering field?

plz clearify,have little doubts.
if possibe plz give us the webaddress of this info posted on home office.

thanks in advance
ravi.

It was initially launched for science / engineering only and the scope has recently been expanded to include all other subjects.

Hello uk apirant .
I am in the same boat as u are and I am also interested in pursuing an msc in finance from uk this year.
Have u applied to any other university except lancester and strathclyde?i feel lancaster is a good university but not the best for finance in uk.I personally feel u have a grt profile and a grt gmat score which should help u to get into any of the best finance program in uk.
The experience which u have is it in any finance related field ?if yes then u can definitely apply to best finance programme in uk ----lbs-mif (according to my view lbs-mif is best).
According to my research I have found out that the following colleges are best in uk for finance programmes.in the order of there rankings.
1)lbs-mif
2)imperial college
3)lse
4)city university
5)warwick.
This is completely on my personal research.would like to hear from u guys and all the seniors pgites that whether I am rgt or wrg?Especially from mr sandeep gupta as this guy is in uk and is really willing to help newbies like us.
Do correct me if I am wrg or have I missed any university, lets try to make a complete list and ranking of all financ programes in uk.
I am particularly interested in applying to lbs-mif and thats why preparing for my gmat.
Bye guys.

Hi guys,

Sandeep, Thanks a lot for the information. The WHM Visa sounds like a good option. I read the detailed requirements for the Visa, mentioned by yourself in some other thread, which was very useful.

Sameer, All the universities mentioned by you are excellent, although i'm not too sure about Imperial college for Finance. I researched a lot about all these universities and in my case they were either too expensive or i had missed the deadline for this year. Lancaster is quite recognised and has an excellent ranking for its finance and accounting department and the tuition fee was within my budget.

I had applied for Manchester Business School for its Finance and Economics; but i did not get an offer as they needed a higher level of economics during undergrad study. I do not have a hardcore finance background, but i have taken subjects in financial management and accounting. For some time now, i have been conversing and reading about finance and different job profiles, which have stimulated my interest in finance. I had secured admissions for MBA in some good institutes in India but decided to pursue a degree in finance inorder to specialise in this stream and maybe go for an MBA later.

It is a known fact that getting a job after graduating in MSc from a UK university is quite difficult. But how i see it is that because of the SEGS scheme the employers would be willing to offer jobs or atleast keep you on a probatory period to analyze your potential. I believe that this scheme does not gaurantee a job but it surely enhances the chances.

Thanks

hi...i wanted 2 know abt these msc courses in uk...m lookin at an msc in mgmt/IB/ib MKTIN
when i apply ill have completed my bcom...no work exp...
my 10th, 12th have been v good...88 n 82 pc resp...if my ty goes very well..any chances of scholarships??
also..do these courses have credibility bak in india??

I would suggest that you should work for 4-5 years in India before considering an MSc in Uk or abraod. You will not gain much except a degree if you go for it now. The feel of a work place is important to absorb the learnings from an international course.
The acceptance or credibility of the MSc back in India is dependent on the reputation of the school and alumi network as well.

Sandeep

BTW - do you see any sms syntax in my mails? Kindly avoid it. It may seem hep in college life, but not in a corporate career. If you don't drop this tendency, then you will find it difficult to write reports and formal written communication in a corporate life.

thanks 4 tht bit..n as 4 the sms syntax..call it laziness..i shall definitely work on it.

Hi all,
Anybody applying for M.Sc. (Supply Chain) from Cranfield university this year or next year?
I want to go for this course for next year, as this course is supposed to one of the Mecca for people wanting to specialise in SCM.
Also, does anybody know if UK universities accept 3 year UG course for admission into their M.Sc. courses?
