Hi
I am an engineer. I am exploring the MSc (Eco) program at LSE.
Wanted to know do they accept engineers? Seems like they do.
But is it worth for engineers to do MSc (Eco) from LSE?
Since I have not studied economics so I think they would ask me to go for 2 year program instead of 1 yr.
So, at end of 2 years, what can I expect in terms of opportunities?
Would really appreciate, if anyone can answer my queries.
Thanks
-Anish
Hey Anish,
They will definitely ask you to go for the two yr course because the course content is very intensive and you need to have your basics in place. i have a friend who studied Economics at St Stephens and then went to LSE and they asked her to do the two yr course even though stephens is the pioneer for economics in India.
In terms of opportunities, say if you get admission by next year and complete the course by 2012, there will definitely be consulting firms, banks, UNDP, world Bank etc which will recruit you if you fit their needs. LSE is known for its Economics degree(the most sought after course at graduate school in LSE) and it is considered one of the best in the world. So if you enjoy studying economics and you know that its the way you want to go, then go for it. It will be one of the best two years of your life(my opinion)

Hello everybody!
First, i shud introduce myself! i m a final year b.tech student in EEE. I am want to know if its possible for me to do masters in economics (with engg background)?
If yes, then where to search for it?
Anish, you can go to the LSE website and contact the students individually. All the details are available there.
the students are very helpful and they reply within a couple of weeks or sooner than that if they re free.
I suggest you start writing an SOP now itself, the admissions open in october and there is a high ratio of intake to applicants for the Eco program.
more info on the LSE website.
cheers

Depends where you want to do it from. IN INdia, the DSE program is the best but the entrance exam is already over. (yes they accept engineers).
Your next best option is the US and UK.
In the UK there is LSE, warwick, SOAS etc. these are the top schools.
In the US, go to the US news rankings for top grad schools for economics.
and contact the admissions office of the colleges by email.
they reply and they are very helpful and informative.
cheers
Just one tip guys.. Most of LSE's courses are very academic i.e. they do not have a business school.
Also, I think doing a 2 year course is much better than a 1 year course because with a one year course, the moment you arrive at LSE you will have to start applying for jobs - in fact, grad apps open in September and LSE academic year starts in October, so applying first thing after reaching there isn't ideal as you take time to adjust etc. With a 2 year course, you can apply for internships in the first year and then for grad places in the second year. Makes it much easier.
For me, LSE was worth it because of free Hare Rama Hare Krishna lunch at campus :-D
Hello Everyone,
I have around 4 yrs of experience in IT industry and very intereted to go for economics. I have not much idea about selection and admission process of LSE, could anyone from forum can brief what constitute the admission process for getting into LSE and what institute expect from candidate while selecting them. Also, the cost of living expenses and fees for entire course, if anyone has idea?
Thanks in advance!

Hey
All the engineering grads who are interested in economics, am also one among u all.
But afetra lot of exhaustive research i ahve found out one thing.
Since we are from a different background, and since there would already be many Eco grads who wud be applying to the same program, it would be better if we are able to show some Eco background.
Most of the universities outside india always ask for some Eco background, i did try JNU entrance but was not a good attempt.
But to apply to universities outside India, many universities ask for some background in
economics...and since me being from different background..am trying to find out some short
term economics courses in India to be able to cover up for the non eco background.
But most of the certificate or short term courses are majorly finance courses and i have
not been able to find out a proper course with much of eco and maths stuff that these Eco
programs require as a prerequisite.
So finally thinking if is should take up some finance certification like CFA, at least they
have some economics stuff covered.
I would grateful if somebody can shed some light on this as i am almost exhausted searching
for a short term economics course.
it would be great if someone could shed some light on the following topic :-
Many of us are from engineering background and want to pursue mba from abroad; I am from India;
we all know we have to have atleast two- three years of workX. But during this time what should be the right course of action: simply a job , a CFA certificate , a bachelors degree in finance or economics of a masters....just to make ourselves up to the mark to the admission standards of top business schools.
IT would be great if someone could spare some time to answer this query.
thanks ,
Sidharth
