Hiya,
Some generic info -

Distance from airport - 80 mins

Free review: Pleasure club is a pretty shady place, but, near mica

time the process started: 9 am

time closing: 8 pm (though if you have a bus/train to catch a little early they're pretty accomodating)

Total people called for GE/PI - 486
(thats the no. i remember, its there or there about anyway)

End of the day (8 pm for us) -
A shortlist of spot offer and confirmed rejects

Scoring system -
had put in the scoring system but -
a. PAT's gonna be explaining all of this
b. Few details weren\t entirely accurate
Have therefore edited my post.
Anyways, this info will be available when you go for your GE/PI and its a very transparent process, so no worries here.

The math -
58 people called.
46 showed up.
5 spot offers
15-20 rejects
20 odd shortlisted
Therefore if you've been shortlisted chances of a convert are pretty good.

GE Format -
Issue / Problem was given
eg. most important leaders of 20th century / how to increase political awareness amongst the youth.
8 mins to think of ideas / solutions and then list your top 5.
20 mins to discuss and reach concencus on any 3.
8 people in a GE.
Fairly chilled out affair as in time to speak was more than enough.

PI -
3 panelist
Most lasted 10 -15 mins
Questions general expected questions where there -
Why MICA?
In case you're switching industry why etcetra?
Note: Most questions came from the Form you've filled
Personal feeling: We speak about how we can 'guide' an interview.
This seemed a lot out of the form, therefore, to guide was more diffcult.
Therefore maybe something to keep in mind how you tackle it.
All in all a reasonably chilled out affair.

A few more things -

Senior put in a lot of effort across the board. Right from coming to pick people up at IIM-A to general queries while at MICA.

Do try and pick their brains while you'll are waiting for your process, can be quite useful.

Also its a long day, so plan according, best take things to read and all if you plan to stay till 8 pm or so.

Hope this is useful.
Cheers,
Chinmaya

P.S. a dramatised, some what over the top GE/PI experience is to follow.
P.S. In case have got a few facts wrong pls correct.

Have been dying to be part of such a community

Chinmaya

Thank you somuch Yet...

It must be great to be a part of such a nice insti, congrats man!

Sachin

Warning: long story, mostly about me J with a few useful stuff

Background:
Almost obsessed with getting into MICA (commonly referred to as pigheadedness)
I've been giving CAT for the past 3 years (CAT 2007 was the third) and have been called since the last two years for the MICAT, GE/PI and had not made it through.
Last year had got into the Entrepreneurship programme but did not go for it.
Worked with an ad agency called Leo Burnett instead.

So now I reach MICA campus. Early. Cause was living in a dingy and not so pleasant hotel called Pleasure Club (and no, its not a very exotic). insane place. Dirty as hell, mosquitoes and hard water. Never mind.

So MICA campus, great place, serene and beautiful. So now I wanna smoke. Obviously.
Can't get a damn cigarette. Go out of the campus and then shop is shut isn't it - God damn you Murphy - so the watchman offers be a bidi, a politely refuse and decide to come back an hour later. So chilling, chai and all happens. Meet Chuck and waste time.

Then a speech by PAT (Prof Atul Tandon).
Spoke on MICA, among other things if you want high salaries you're in the wrong place. (right in the face, take that!) A few other generic things, he was also keen on speaking to the parents and more so explain them as much as the students themselves.

Time for GE:
Now the thing is that I'm not very good at GE's.
I'm a quiet kinda guy and feel pretty awkward to scream with passionate vigor on how to improve road transportation. I mean what the hell happens to people when they entre a group discussion, they aggression and belief that they generate is weird, scary and funny all at the same time. So the idea in the GE was to contribute where possible and more importantly don't screw it up. You have the interview, which is easier to crack.

Topic: Youth in India are hardly aware of political issues so ways to promote this.

Write 5 points in 8 minutes and then discuss for 20 minutes.
Now 8 minutes is a long time. Michael did a lap of Albert park in less than two minutes. So he could gone 4 times around albert park and we'd still be thinking about how to increase political awareness.

Ideas came: Rang De, Munna bhai, inconvenient truth. Make a movie, obviously. Lead India. Then grassroot level / school-college level initiatives. Get politicans to interact with people. Mobilize mass media. Saw the whole damn thing.

Wrote 5 points. Discssion happened. Reached consensus on 2 of the 3.
Contributed in point 1-2. Kinda cleared a couple of points to the effect of
"so what we're saying is" got two three points of discussion and clubbed it under a wide bracket. So knew GE was not bad.

Then came food. Followed by some awesome fruit pudding. Go to the canteen and have that, recommended. The chocolate biscuit isn't bad either.

Met Prof Deval as well.

Personal Interview -
3 panelists (one was prof Deval)

Made a few nice comments about the way I'd written my form (which was above average on its entertainment content with a dash of humor). Had written about being fat.

Panel: You're not fat
Me: I am. See the belly.
Panel: No you don't have a belly
(In my mind): Are you being nice / pulling my leg / or you actually mean it (which makes you very very wonderful people to know)
Me: Maybe the tie's hiding it, but, there is a belly.

Then questioned on movies.
Was asked an example of a movie I though should've gone to the Oscars but did not.
Could not remember the nominations so did not really answer.
Was then asked on movies I liked - Life is beautiful, Shawshank redemption.
Something on film noir - Sin City and 300 (did not want to talk about Breathless cause it would mean a conversation on Goddard so best stay shut on thing you don't know well)
Panel: You like these warm, happy ending movies
Me: yea, but, also something like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.
Something on comparison between Reservoir Dogs and Departed.
Then across genres basically told them am greedy as hell so watch anything I can J
Then something on what advertising can learn from movies.

Why mica
Spoke about in servicing now. Looking to move to acc planning.
Spoken to planners and ex-micans (was aked to name a few, rattled off without a problem)

Next on the agenda, media and hype
Said that if a channel does it as a business strategy can't complain.
Was asked if I'd do it personally, said no.
Editorial close to my heart. Like Hindu as paper etc etc.
But as a business I can't say hype should not be done.
Then they turned the question is it okay if it promotes communal violence.
Me: I have a similar complain that against new channel, irresponsible, giving space to a lot of nonsense basically, but, ownership structures what news channel wants if that's a business decision they make, cant say anything much against it.

Prof Deval then asked me plans if I did not get in this year.
Said would continue working and look for a generic mba next year

Was asked to give an example of Problem solving at work
Gave an example.

Whole process lasted about 15 minutes (or so I think).

Lots of waiting. 8 pm results declared.
Got a spot offer. Mind went blank.
Gave the DD without a thought.

3 years of trying. It's Done!
In MICA now, bloody insane.

yettobepaid has finally got his dues. BIG CONGRATULATIONS!
and now the fight's fr 115 seats! *gulp*

Looks as if Chinmay has been paid finally....

@115 seats I have a view that it will now put a bit more pressure on the guys having their interviews on 19th.A bit unfair....What say PUYs.

Sachin
GD Topic: list down the five leaders who have left a mark in the 20th century, we had to first list down our personal choices in 8 minutes. After which there was GD where ultimately we had to short list 3 leaders within 20mins. Each one of us good enough air time to talk and discuss.

PI:
PI: A young arty lady with short hair
P2: a fair lil plump mam , with a smiling face.
P3: sweet smiling lady

P2: So we are much tried now after the end of the day so lets reverse the tables now (my interview was at around 6 pm)
P2: lets make the interview an insane experience.
P3: you ask us questions instead of us asking you.
Me: mam what gets you to MICA?
Me: According to you what is missing at MICA and you would like to incorporate?
Me: how is the mix of students at MICA?

And asked 2 more questions then the PI moved on to my work ex. I have been a journalist for nearly one and half years so I guess thats why the tables were turned on me

P3: according to you which interview you have conducted been among your favorites? And why?
P3: what is the most typical question at PaGaLGuY.com youll ask to interviewees?
P2: if a person is shy and reserved how you get the relevant information out?
P3: how do you maintain the insane element even in the interviews conducted by PaGaLGuY.com?

That was more a less my interview, short and sweet. The panel was quite nice before the interview I was nervous but things went fine. The third panelist didnt speak much, except as they were talking amongst themselves I realized the idea to turn the tables on me was her :P

Best of Luck to all!

I have my interview on 19th and I dont think it is unfair at all. It's not the case that I won't be given a chance to present myself fully on 19th. Moreover, it's not that all seats will be filled with on-the-spot offers. If I am able to convince the panel of my abilities, even if a single seat is left on that day, i will get that seat. Otherwise a more deserving candidate will get it. In any case, its a fair game my friend. After all we all want just one seat. Who cares if it is out of 120 or 60 or 15. Thats my point of view.

I am so proud of you my friend:razz:, you are just in right spirit of taking the interview, I just wanted to know if the whole "reduction-in-seats" thing changes anything psychologically:tellme:, but as you have shown my friend, you are in a positive state of mind and that is the best thing you can have....ATB to you go ahead and grab it.
