The Course

HSS has been offering an M.Tech course in Human Resource Management since 1982. With the objective to meet the demands of contemporary business, it restructured the course and has been offering it as Masters in Human Resource Management(equivalent to MBA in HR) since July 2010.

Details About the programme

Programme: Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM)
Admission: July 2013
Duration: Two years
Number of students: 30
Students' selection: Through CAT, group discussion, and personal interview
Minimum qualification: Graduate in Engineering/Postgraduate in Science/Commerce/Humanities and Social Sciences with 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent.


Course fee: It is a self-financing course. The admission and tuition fee per semester is Rs 75,000/-(Rupees seventy five thousand only) excluding hotel, mess, and establishment charges. Altogether it is 380000 for 2 years including the hostel fee.

Programme Details: It is a four-semester course. The first semester will expose students to the basics of business management. The second and third semesters will cover the HR-related core subjects.The dissertation work will start during the summer vacation, at the end of the second semester. The fourth semester will focus on specific and specialized HR issues.

Important Information

Department of Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS) use CAT for short-listing candidates for its MHRM programme. IIMs have no role either in the selection process or in the conduct of the programme.

The following are the guidelines pertaining to 2013-2015 MHRM Admission:
(i) Graduate in Engineering/Postgraduate in Science/Commerce/Humanities and Social Sciences with 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent.
(ii) Selection will be based on application rating, performance in CAT and candidate's performance in group discussion and personal interview. Post-qualification work experience in industrial organizations will be given due consideration.
(iii) The Department follows Government of India norms regarding eligibility and reservation of seats for qualified Scheduled Caste/Tribe candidates, Other Backward Classes and Persons with Disability.

The candidates seeking admission to the MHRM Programme of HSS must complete the following procedures:

Step 1: Take the CAT- 2012 Examination

Step 2:

(a) The application fee is Rs.1600/- (sixteen hundred) for general candidates and Rs. 800/- (eight hundred) for candidates pertaining to SC/ST/PH category. Female Applicants are exempted from application fee.

(b) The starting date for receiving applications is January 9, 2013. The candidate may complete the online application form on or after January 9, 2013 by clicking here http://erp.iitkgp.ernet.in/MHRMApplications

(c) The candidate may then obtain a demand draft for the application fee made in favour of “IIT Kharagpur” payable at Kharagpur.

(d) Then, the candidate has to send the print-out of the completed online application form along with photocopies of proof of qualification and experience, and the requisite demand draft to:

The last date to receive your duly filled application form is February 15, 2013.

Please note that Group Discussion (GD) / Personal Interviews (PI) will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur at Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

The following are the dates for GD/PI at different centers:

a) Kolkata: 8th to 10th March, 2013
b) Bangalore: 16th to 18th March, 2013
c) Delhi: 16th March to 18th March, 2013
d) Mumbai: 22nd to 24th March, 2013

Candidates selected for GD/PI will be intimated through email, registered post/courier by February 28, 2013. The date, time and the venue of GD/PI will be mentioned in the letter.

The following is the criteria for the calls

Calls would be given to the candidates based on the profile i.e., cat score, academics and work experience in the ratio of 1:12

However please find below the least percentile of the students who are admitted in to the course for the session 2012-14

General Category :

Freshers & Work experience less than 12 months : 83
Work Experience 12-36 months : 80
Work experience 36 + : 74

OBC : 74

SC/ST/PH : 61

Above is only for your reference not official cutoffs varies from year to year

@Bibhu2109 The application is not yet out and is expected to hit in first week of January

@getintoiima The course shortlists candidates based on profile so cannot intrepret the cutoffs however ... 80 + in general category and for reserved category 70 + are cutoffs but the lowest cutoff is always proportional to the profile of the candidate

10th: 71% (State board)

12th: 75% (CBSE)

B.Tech: 72%

Work-EX: 1 Year

Extra-curricular: fair amount of Participation

Expected cat percentile as per my attempts: 90+ %ile.

The college with one of the best GD/PI process !! :)). Last year got thru but didn't take admission anywhere... would apply again !! :))

@workaholic198 Can u pls provide us the details of ur GD-PI process. It would help us this year. Also, Kindly let us know the type of profiles of candidates u have seen while attending GD-PI, what was their CAT score? What, as per you, was major point which helped candidates last yr to the admissions there?Do u have any idea of number of candidates appeared in GD-PI process!!!!!!

The applicants to seats ratio is 1:5
profiles are this way

Freshers with percentiles from 85 + with good set of extra curricular and co curricular activities

Work ex people ranging between 14 - 30 mnths with 80 + Percentile

Work ex with more than 25 + and till 35 mnths with 77 percentile as minimum

So thats about the profiles ...

Hi.... I m pretty much interested in this course as this course is specialized for HR with a brand name of IIT K..... I am currently working in TCS. I am planning to take CAT 2013....

I am decent in extra curricular but most of them are in sports....... I want to know what extra curricular IIT K looks for this course and what can i do in this 1 year span so that I can show my interest towards HR.

I have 35 months of experience. & I am expecting a percentile between 75 to 85 (min & Max included). Since the profile plays a good role in selection process. I too would be applying in this course.

Hi... sorry for late reply people. But about GD/PI details, I guess that wld be helpful after one is called for. It is a good course based on my last year experience. If I wld not have been stubborn to get into IIM only i wld have taken admission. Even this year my exam was not very good to ensure Iim ... :). Rest, u can search my post in last year thread for detailed experience. Will surely provide my detailed answer once we get a GD PI call. Let us all apply first. 😃
