The association of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and India dates back to the very years when AIT was established as the SEATO Graduate School of Engineering in 1959. Though established for SEATO countries, the second batch of students at AIT included a student from India.

Since then the association of India and AIT has witnessed a steady increase. India is represented in the AIT Board of Trustees, which is the highest governing body of the Institute. Next to Thailand, India boasts of the highest number of faculty members. The Indian study body is very active and has contributed significantly to the Indian profile at AIT.

Indian partnership with AIT was strengthened when Indian became a founder member of the new AIT when the Ambassador of India to Thailand, H.E. Mr. Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty signed the new AIT Charter on 25 August 2011
