Hi Shine12,

I am also interested in doing MBA from Singapore/HongKong or China.

My profile is not that impressive -

Work Ex - 4 years (IT background)
B.E - 68 %

10th - 56% and 12th - 80%
Planning to appear for GMAT by the end of this year.

What chances do I stand for MBA in Singapore?

Thanks

Hi Shine12,

I think you will make it. Just focus on your essays and recos. 😃

Hi mba_gmat,

Your chances will depend on your GMAT score..So just concentrate on that first

Thanks

Thanks MbaAspirant,

What score would be ideal for my profile, I am targeting 700 for now.
Does working in international location helps? I have worked for 5 months in Singapore and 2 months in Canada.

What about MBA in China, are they good?

I'm also targeting Asian Business schools. GMAT alone will not make or break the deal. Your entire package as a whole would be the deciding factor. With a score of 750 and a lousy application package would not get you in whereas a score of 650 with some good essays and recommendations would open doors to the best of universities.
@ mba_gmat: International work experience is always a positive but more important is the kind of work you did there. For eg: If you were just baby sitting a software or just went there to implement a software then it would add no value. If you have done something that was not expected of you or if you have been pivotal in solving or handling an issue, then its going to pop your application in the eyes of an adcom.

All the best..

Thanks ghk,

Yes, you are right. I have to work on the whole package besides GMAT score.
If you are targeting Asian business schools, any idea whether any school in China is good for Indians?

Regards,

Well there are some very good schools in china - Peking University and Tsinghua are considered the Harvard and MIT of China. But, you must know Mandarin to get an internship and a job after your MBA..

Schools in HK and Singapore are more international friendly and do not stress too much on your language ability!!!

Thanks Again ghk,

If you see my profile(which I have posted on the top of this post), do I stand good chances for school in Singapore & Hongkong? well my academics are bad and not much to appreciate in work experience as well. Now I want to put things on track but afraid my past will come in between my future plan.

mba_gmat,

You profile as posted does not reveal much about you as a person. I'm sure you have something unique about you. Academics are something that you cannot change. So what you need to work on is to prove that you very much capable of handling the workload that the b-school challenges you with. Maybe you could take a few courses and get a good grade in them. Or maybe you can ace the GMAT, which would prove that the academic scores are not a true indicator of your skills and ability. Many schools offer a bonus essay which asks whether you want something the adcoms need to know that was already not mentioned in other essays. This is a good place to clear the dust and explain to them that the scores are not a true indicator of your potential.

As far as schools in Singapore and HK go. NUS in singapore and HKUST in Hong Kong are the most competitive schools in the whole of S.E. Asia, apart from INSEAD singapore. So you can be assured that there will be people with good academic scores and GMAT. What i suggest is to do some personal discovery and think about how you are unique form other schools. To give you an example, one guy that i talked to recently got admitted to Kelloogs and he said that his magic bullet was his passion of Butterflies that he collected. It was not only interesting but also was unique and he had an ship load of information on them. So think how you are unique and how you stand out - in short find your own magic bullet!!!

Hope this helps.

P.S. I'm no admission consultant, all my info is out of my long research by talking to vaious people. So take it with a grain of salt!!!

Thanks ghk, I appreciate your honest and insightful comments, you are true I have to find my own magic bullet and hone it so much that it pass right through the target.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers!

Thanks all....
Good load of information........
However , aftre putting lots of thoughts and some research , I have decided to give Gmat again.

Hello,
I attended the QS tour in Delhi recently and came across adcoms from HKU and NTU. I am planning to apply to atleast 2 Singapore/Hong Kong MBA programmes. HKU is a great university although it's MBA programme is recent. How strong do you guys think are the job prospects after doing an MBA from HKU in Hong Kong/Singapore region. Also, what is your opinion about Singapore Management University MBA which is also fairly new.
As for my profile, I have a GMAT score of 710, decent academic score through out, good extra- curriculars and five years work experience. (no international work experience)
Given the lack of international work experience i know it will be a big minus for NTU,HKUST and NUS. This is one reason i am looking forward to MBA from HKU and SMU as they are upcoming programs with strong future prospects. What do you guys feel about the same ?

I dont think the lack of international work experience is a big concern for schools like NUS, HKUST etc. The quality of work experience is more important. I have known more people who have worked for 3-5 yrs in India, have never worked abroad and still have matriculated from NUS, HKUST, CEIBS etc.

HKU is a very prestigious university, may be the best in Asia. Its definitely more popular in Hong Kong than any other school!! But its B-school is relatively new. I think its just 7 years old. This accounts for less number of Alumni in the management field than other schools in that region. On the other hand, The alumni of HKU (from other departments) are in high positions in hong kong and would like to recruit people from their Alma Matars!! So it all comes down to you and your ability to network..

SMU is faily new and does not have a university backing which makes it a "risky" school - Not a Bad school, just risky since you dont know of success stories from this school!! Try to get hold of the current students or alumni and talk to them and get their opinion.

Thanks for your input ghk, I will try to chat up with a few alumni of these schools. Going by your response you seem quite positive about an HKU MBA. I am also interested in this program because it involves a four month (one semester) at either London Business School or Columbia Business School which in my opinion will be a good international exposure as well as learning experience.
Coming back to NUS, NTU and HKUST , what do you feel are the more important parameters for these programs - GMAT, Work Experience, Academics, etc. For example, Harvard Business school maybe gives the most importance to potential for leadership in an applicant. What would you list as more important criterias for Asian MBA's?

@ Connectansh, no problem!! coming to your question of most important parameters - its a very difficult question!!!
Here is what i've concluded from my research (talking to students and alumni)
HKUST => Looks into diversity and work experience (quality)
NUS => Have absolutely no idea what they are looking for, the universal answer applies here as well - They look at the overall profile of the candidate.
NTU => No idea, Not on my list so, didn't research!!

And yes i have a good opinion on HKU MBA (On my target list!!) and like you mentioned their CBS and LBS tie up is intimidating as well!!

Just a thought,
Asian MBA is a mid durations sorts
NUS Is 17 mth, Nanyang is 16 mth, HKU is 14 month.

Just wanted to invite views on this being a term more than european and a sem less than american, wat are the advantages Asian MBA's can offer

Considering i'm looking for a career change, electives form a real important part of B School for me. A term less means 5 electives less.
Does this impact a person's career , who is looking to move to COnsulting after 3.5 yrs in IT.

P.S. I have not done much research in schools other than NUS, so wanted if someone who has been through the process, help me out.

@Nishant23, I personally feel that the 15-17 month programs lie in the sweet spot. they are neither too short (for a career changer) nor too long!! So i really like the time span of most of the asian schools.

Hi ..

Would be great if someone can throw some light on INSEAD.

I am aware that from the cost perspective , its a different ball game altogether.

Studying in INSEAD and coming back to India and work - any thoughts on this.

Cheers
