A very good and niche combination. will help you to join mid mgmt of Intellectual property outsourcing firms, tech firms like Philips etc who do a lot of work on IP. Also good openeings in most orgaizations in risk mgmt/compliance deppts due to legal background. Openings in Big 5 like EY, PwC, KPMG etc in their risk asessment/tax/legal and similar divisions.

In due course Indian legal sector will get opened up in next 2-3 years. You will have lot of opportunities in US/UK legal firms opening shops. Anyway some of better Indian legal firms also require legal-MBA combos.

It is advisable to work 2-3 yrs in a good law firm and then join MBA.
Just FYI Harvard offers a combo Law JD-MBA. chk their website.

Hey you guys!

I am from National Law University, Lucknow. I am planning to take the CAT in 2013.

Nice to finally see a lawyer here...welcome aboard 😃

My sis graduated from NLS bangalore in 2003.Tell me why do you want to go for an MBa when you are are already from an Ivey league Indian law school? The placement packages offered by the good law firms at the national law schools from what I have learned from my sis experience is at par with any good B school. And the career growth is also not bad.

guys i really wanna know this. ...im studying law at nlsiu....average salary here is around 8-10 lacs pa....im only scared coz i donno how much i might be paid after doing an mba coz ive been readin that average salary in IIMs is around 14-16 which i might get if i work in a law firm for 2 yrs itself....kindly help....

@ Billy

looking at an MBA degree with a constrained approach of the number of zeroes in ur salary will not help in making an informed decision.

Strictly going by numbers lawyers in Corp Law firm earn better(at the start as well as later on as Partners) as compared to their MBA counterpart.

I am myself a lawyer and soon after college started with an UK Law firm in its Liaison office in India with an amazing salary, but was not satisfied with the cubicle life so left it and started my own law practice.

from what i have gathered with my trysts with Management entrance procedure is that these high salaries are given to mostly people with an adequate work experience. Also we must understand the preferences given to Engineers (in India) during the placements.

So my suggestion(instead of advice) would be to take up ur Corp Law Job for a few years and go for an MBA degree in the USA or UK.

My reasons:

1. the Ivy League MBA Schools have a lot to offer to a student from Social Science backgrounds as compared to their Indian Counterparts.Mr P C Chidambaram is an Harvard MBA Grad who later on started his own law practice, and was successful.

2. After working with say AMSS or AZB once can definitely save a lot of funds for an MBA degree abroad; as the total cost of MBA abroad is quite a lot.

3. If your considering the Indian option then to working in Corp Law will save you alot of money which u can invest in ur MBA degree.

So there it is don't go only by the salaries.

hey lion king,

thank u for the suggestion...i had been doing a lot of thinking about doing an mba right after law school...didnt make sense to me...took up a top corp law firm job instead 😃 ...like u said i plan to work in the firm for about 3-4 yrs and then try for b schools in the US...this would give me valuable work exp...plus i guess not many from law background apply for ivy league b schools which would only serve as an advantage for me....

I wish you all the luck Buddy.

no need to worry..u have still a lot of chances regarding to that concern..the thing is this you should to be passionate about your MBA..then this world will be responsible to make you successful..so we can say that it is just like the work of concern that we have to make the things possible regarding to your scheme that make MBA as with you and also from gud college/institute..we all have to be ensure about the term that you are getting admission in gud colleges where you are so much responsible for your deeds..and you will get the placement for sure..and with high packages and also your law background and grades doesn't matter a lot...i just want to suggest you some top colleges of MBA..from where u can get ur degree with much better placement..the top colleges for it lists are given as viz-
1.Christ college
2.Lovely professional university,Punjab
3.Fore school of management,New Delhi
