Hi AK1809, congrats on securing your Admit.

I'm a current student at Manchester business school and am available to answer any queries/concerns you or any other potential applicant may have.

Cheers,
Maanas

Hi Maanas,

The consulting focus in the curriculum is excellent at MBS, how is recruitment for Consulting coming along?

How is the internship scene there in UK this year? It seems to me 2012 and possible 2013 are going to be extremely tough for EU in general.

Also, how do you think the visa rules will affect MBA students at MBS?

I'm aware these are broad questions, answer whatever you can :)

Best,
MUFC

Thanks for your wishes Maanas. I guess MUFC has already extinguished my quota of curriculum queries. Hence, I will step on to few others -

1. What are the housing options at Manchester? Does MBS provide any hostel facilities? What would you recommend, living on campus or off campus? Please cite reasons also.
2. What does an average monthly living budget look like?
3. Are MBA students allowed to work part time? How difficult is it to secure a side job to meet those monthly expenses?

Once again thank you for coming forward ! Enlighten us !

Well, the internship season has just started and deadlines for most consulting firms have just ended, so most of the students are waiting for the results. We have had some success in Mckinsey where a few of the students are in the final interview rounds.

Overall the internship situation is a little bleak, since only a few schools here have a two year program, few companies advertise structure MBA programs. how ever most of the students who applied for internship last year managed to get something.

Regarding the full time opportunities, it is going to be an interesting situation. As of now even the firms are waiting and watching to decide how to react to the new regulation. Class of 2012 is still eligible for the PSW.

Most of the students (Including me) live in private accomodations. MBS as such doesn't provide accommodation but University of Manchester has a lot of student halls around the campus. I found them to be too cramped and preferred a bigger house. Since UOM is part of the city, there is no on campus and off campus living as such.

The average budget hovers around 700-800 but again depends on the person.

MBA students are legally permitted to work part time but the course is designed in a way that you end up spending even the weekends in the school doing group assignments. None of the students from my or the previous batch were working part time.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Thank you for your reply, really helpful.

Interesting point you make about very few schools offering a two-year programme and that's probably the internship culture is lower in UK in general. Thanks, you should keep us updated on that front because internships are vital for career-changers.

Secondly, how do I know about these private accomodations? I'm not too keen on student halls either and I'm guessing unless you share costs private accomodation is going to be expensive?

One final questions, 700-800 GBP is basic staying cost or includes the weekly socialising as well?

Thanks once again.

Cheers.

Thank you for your elaborate response. Indeed it has cleared much air. Glad to hear that your batch wont be facing problems of PSW. Just a quick query, do you have any idea how are universities looking to tackle the new Tier 2 regulation? Also, I understand we will have 23 months on student visa (19+4) as per the new regulation w.e.f April 2012. To this end, when does the job hunting process start generally? Is it after the end of course (i.e. in last 4 months) or does the process start well within the last 6 months of the course providing 8-9 months to secure a sponsor?

Thank you once again.

Hi Maanas/AK1809, Can you give some insights regarding the interview? I have one scheduled today...6.30pm IST

Hey Aleron,

I took interview of MBS some time back. My Interviewer was Dr. Heather Spiro and the interview lasted for about 45-50mins.

The interview questions were pretty straightforward with few volleys here and there

1. Career Progression till date
2. Why MBA?
3. Why Manchester?
4. Short term and Long term goals
5. Why should we select you? what do you bring to the table?
6. Two Weaknesses and two strengths

Volleys-

1. You have an assignment to submit at 9 in the morning and your team is required to work late to meet the deadline, how would you motivate your team?
2. How do you intend to pitch yourself in front of potential recruiters post mba?
3. What are the key learnings you wish to take away from MBS?

Apart from these, the interviewer had gone through my profile at an intrinsic level. She also asked me many profile specific questions such as -

1. How did you manage the career/industry switch? How did you pitch yourself in front of the second recruiter? (I switched from technology to marketing during my career)

2. She specifically asked about one of my community activity in detail.

At the end, I would suggest, be completely honest. Just be yourself ! Don't contradict your application and essays at any point in time.

She is very sweet and comfortable to talk to. Ironically, when i came out of the interview, i felt it to be one of my not so good interviews as i realized i may have been carried away by the level of comfort and on certain occasions, i may have said more than i should ! But, that somehow worked in my favor !

Last but not the least, maintain eye contact at all times and a smile won't hurt :)

Hope this helps.
All the best Mate !

Cheers

AK,

So are you going ahead with MBS or awaiting results from any other school??
I was wondering if we could connect and have a telephonic conversation on certain aspects of MBS.. Watsay?

Aditya,

Honestly I am in bit of a fix. Though i really really like the curriculum of MBS and not to mention it has phenomenal brand value esp. in India but lately I am not very confident about the PSW prospects in UK especially post abolition of tier 1 category. Hence, ROI looks like a pain.

I have couple of offers but awaiting scholarship decisions. We can definitely get in touch. PMed you my number.

cheers

Hi Guys,

Even I have an admit from MBS.
650/M/6 yrs work exp by start of program
From Bangalore.
I have the same thoughts as you all have mentioned above.
Good reputation. But job prospects / internships? ?

As of now...am mostly taking up the offer even if the odds are against.

Cheers,
Winterburn

Hey winterburn,

Hi Maanas,

Thanks for offering your help. Can you throw some light on

- Quality of Education - Ive heard its good but I've also heard. "Hardly any teaching happens, concepts are introduced and students have to study a hell lot to ensure they learn it" - Is it really true? I hate to believe that the quality of education isnt good. I heard this from another friend who studied in a different university in UK but not Manchester.

- How about IB projects? How good are those to convert into jobs? Everyone does a IB project. So if not jobs in UK, can students capitalize this opportunity to get any other international jobs?

- Examples of companies where students did their projects with last year. Can you name some companies please?

I understand doing an MBA from some university in UK doesnt add value. I have had tons of friends who have come back Yet I am keen to pursue it only because it is MBS.

Thanks in advance !
