Hi Guys,
Want some help from Alumnis as they are the one who have been through all this and many might have undergone the same what I am going to ask.
Anyone can put some light on switching careers with MBA as it is quiet a debatable issue. for example myself am an IT professionla with around 6 years of exp but still interested in i-banking so how do I go about it is it ok if I make a move or is it bad. How do I make a calculative move on this or should I do the MBA in IT itself in which also I can reap the same benefits. I would need the people who have been through all this to give out their view on the above. I am sure many of us would be undergoing the same dilemma and definitely I hope the exp. of some guys can help us gain some knowledge.
Further it would also help if we can compare the career options after doing MBA in the same field as your current profession or if you switch your fields and do your MBA in new field then what are the career options in that. How would you be received in the market and also specially related to me what would be the career options in I-banking how well would I do. I would ask some of the alumnis in banking sector to through some light onto this part of the thread that what will be the career options for a person like me with exp. in IT and now doing MBA in finance.
Thanks

Stop asking same questions in all the post....
My 2-cents
MBA in IT and I-banking don't mix up unless you want to work in IT dept of I-banking firms....
CFA might provide you better option than MBA provided you complete all the three levels ...

Hello All,
I am an IT professional(engineer) and goin for MBA in marketing. I will try to answers the questions asked in this thread, but before that I would like to request you all not to behave like MODS, don't discourage others to ask questions just to increase your no. of posts!!
OK coming to main question is it viable to change job-profile after experience( specially after IT)
the answer is absoltely YES, BUT BUT BUT
there are many factors here that plays a major part:-
1> Whether You are doing a full time course or part time course
Full time :- you can change your career altogether( will come back to it later)
Part Time :- difficult or should I say only in exceptional cases you would be able to do so
2> Depends on career oppurtunities thereafter
Some companies/Colleges treats such students as freshers during placement, because they don't hase required domain experience, In this case you might get lower pay scale than your previous employer!! so be ready for this if you are really looking for a change.
3> Company interviews
I have faced this in all of my interviews for MBA entrance, everybody asked me WHY?? I am on a fast track in my company, doing really great both position wise and salary wise, then WHY I want to leave my present Job??
Just that they wants to know your mental status, whether you are really determined out of your interest or it is that you are unstable in taking decisions. Just be cool, and prepare hard.
Last but not the least:- Changing Job profile is not at all easy, you need to grasp the subjects which you have never studied, that too in-depth. It is difficult to adjust in new professional environment which is different from IT companies. SO BE SURE YOU REALLY WANTS TO CHANGE YOUR JOB PROFILE!!!
Hope it answers your questions.
Any further questions, just ask on this thread or PM me 😃

Nope.....if there is lot of scopr for you if you do MBA and get into the pharma field.....
But you go to choose the right college and target the specific course or stream.
If you think you can do it, dont stop your self.
All the best.
PS: Hold on,people will reply to your query.
well the discussion seems to interest me as i ve been through a bit of this although from a revese side ( have shifted from a banking profile to an IT profile ) , just wanted to share my experience of the same (this is just my experience and should not be taken in a general sense ) .
I ve worked in a bank for a year ( not a heavy profile though , I was into operations in the wholesale banking group in one of the leading banks in the country) , but soon realised that the profile did not suit my taste , decided to quit n give CAT another shot ( could not make it to any of the good b-schools ) , but still did not wanted to go back to the same old banking profile , applied for s s/w engineer's role in one of the s/w firms , was picked comfortably but at a very entry level ( the banking exp obviously din't count ) .
saw in one of the posts that you sjuld be fliexible enough to do away with certain aspirations like a slightly low salary in your new role , my bet is that you should go for it (if ur passionate about this new stream that ur picking up ) and an MBA does open this door for you (experts correct me if i am wrong ) .
Just remember if this is the thing that excites you and you wanna do that for most part of your life then it surely is worth petty sacrifices ( the gains will surely come later from ur interest and ur passion ) .
Is it ok for a person to quit work to prepare for CAT? Would that create a negative impression on the panel, conveying that the candidate is a bad manger of time and hence would not be suitable for the role of a manager?
