Whiff of UBS fame catches South More than 25 pc of first-year batch of UBS students from southern states.Payal Pruthi
Chandigarh, July 22: WITH more than 30 students from southern states enrolled in MBA, MBA (IB) and MBA (HR) in this session, it seems that popularity of University Business School is fast sweeping south of Vindhyas.

Of the total 150 seats in the three courses, around 25 per cent have been filled by students from South. Adding olive shade to the B-school, four serving Army officers have also been enrolled. Last year, there were no takers for the seven defence-sponsored seats, but this year, four officers on study leave have decided to also learn to fight boardroom battles.

Talking to Newsline, UBS chairperson Dr Satish Kapoor says this is a healthy trend, as earlier students used to head south for professional courses.

The department is becoming more cosmopolitan like other reputed management institutes, says Kapoor, adding one of the pull factors has been the institutes attachment with the CAT and its placement record. He says that this year, the number of students with an initial job experience has also witnessed a rise.

First-year student Unnikrishnan, who is elated to be at UBS, finds North Indians ebullient and cordial. Travelling is no problem now because of the Kerala Kranti Express, quips Unni. Mallikeswaran, a second-year student, says brand name UBS is popular in South.

The four Army officers are excited about this new academic posting. Unable to hide his happiness, one of them says, We have joined this course so that we could explore other job opportunities.

A hive of activity
Faculty members have started gearing up for the placements for the year ahead. Instead of having one placement officer, a four-member committee has been formed, which will be headed by a coordinator. The placement brochure has already been prepared and the formal fresher party of the department is on August 5.

UBS students to help out Admn in projects

Opportunity To Put Their Skills To Use

Shruti Setia Times News Network

Chandigarh: Students of University Business School will now be helping UT Administration in scientifically analysing the progress of some of the latters ongoing projects.
The IT department of UT will be using the skills of the management students for making its programmes more interesting and useful for students as well as the industry.
UBS students will be analysing the programme Chandigarh-Training on Soft Skills (C-TOSS) as well as the E-sampark programme of UT Administration. Under C-TOSS, college and school students are being trained for soft skills.
The Administration had started this project keeping in mind the opportunities in ITES and BPO industry, which will be coming up in the city with development of the IT Park.
UBS students will now be given a project to analyse these programmes, to see what more can be done to make these suitable for industry as well as students.
Prof Satish Kapoor, chairperson of UBS, said that as
management students learn scientific analysis as part of the curriculum, they can help the Administration in also analysing results of such programmes by looking at the placement records of students.
UBS students will also be given a project to analyse the E-sampark programme, which is part of E-governance.
The students will come up with the data in terms of what all is required by talking to residents across the city.
Other than these two projects, the UT Administration will also be using the welltrained UBS students for promotional activities.
Such activities are done while projecting the city in front of visitors or to impress upon industry heads the advantages of investing in the city.
Management students can be really helpful in this by making presentations and also preparing for presentations by officials.
While the Administration will gain by using human resource and skills of UBS students, the students will learn from the practical field experience they get.

TO ASSIST PGI AS WELL

UBS students will also work on the community development programme of PGI by providing it an executive development programme to make the project effective.

I think more ppl should come up with there experiences of the past 1 and a 1/2 months

Like any other B-school, the first 2-3 months after summer are most hectic due to value-addition fever running on campus I personally have lost track of time, thank god for a long weekend! And thank god for the long awaited informal-freshers (hic!) :drinking:

In 2nd we opt for either a Marketing or Finance major specialisation. The finance people are having it real tough, since Case methodology is preferred by all finance faculty here. I took up the easier route by opting for a finance minor, which maens that I have to study only 2 finance courses and not 4 :black:

Most of the cases we do in Project Appraisla and Finance (PAF) are lifted straight from Harvard, which usually are 15-20 pages long. My Strategic Cost Mgt (SCM) faculty relishes cases from the SSI which he has written himself.

Jai Hind!
