It was a very interesting corporate lecture session by Mr. Narendra Pai, DGM, Corporation Bank, Mangalore. He enlightened us about the scopes in HR field in Corporation Bank and also dealt the new trending changes in corporate and its effect on banking industry.
The core of the session was Narendra Pais explanation for 10 HR issues in Banking Industry, which was highlighted as a holistic approach with present day corporate scenario, Economics and financials linked with HR issues
HR ISSUES IN BANKING INDUSTRY
1.About 50% of work force in the Nationalized Banks will be retiring by 2015, on attaining super annuation. While, Banks have accelerated the recruitment drive to fill in these vacancies, the real challenge is in filling the vacuume created by the loss on account of experience which can not be substituted immediately. One of the solutions for the same is lateral hiring. This will only encourage hoping by the talented ones, but will not address the real issues.
2.With the appointment of young, tech savvy personnel, the landscape of Banking will undergo a metamorphosis. The average age profile of employees will fall drastically.
3.Identification of right person for the right job is also a challenge given the complexities of present day Banking. Dearth of good Branch head as leaders.
4.Specialized job requirements like personnel for Foreign Exchange, Derivatives, Treasury, Corporate Banking, Infra sector financing, Marketing.
5.Highly Unionized work force restricting maneuverability.
6.Financial Inclusion a low cost Banking Model to reach the have nots and deploying personnel for the same.
7.Branch expansion to un-banked areas where deployment/ retention of personnel will become more and more difficult.
8.Banks in private/ Foreign sector are also growing very fast. These Banks are in a position to attract the best talent and pay higher compensation. Further, there is a tendency of becoming immobile or to put it in other words Home Sickness with the average employees. These have resulted in a large scale attrition. There is a great demand for personnel with experience to greener pastures else, for lateral postings. Loyalty factor will be missing.
9.Professionalism will be the buzz word of future of Banking. As technology becomes obsolete very fast, it requires up-gradation from time to time. Consequent to this, there will be need for constant up-gradation of skill sets of the work force. In days to come, Brick and mortar banking will be relegated behind and more and more banking transactions will be carried put through IT driven/ Mobile driven products. This would require continuous up-dation of knowledge of banking personnel and trainingfacility will come into picture.
10.With a view to motivate the employees, incentive schemes will have to be introduced. Fast track promotions/ level jumping as a retention strategy are also being introduced.
It was surely an en-lighting and highly informative session for NITK MBA Students

This is an interesting interactive session from one of our alumniRAKESH GODHWANIa software engineer , an author, president of alumni association of IIMB but yet calls himself as an normal guy..
Here are his life down the stream.
Rakesh is from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He belongs to a family of doctors, thus he always had a crocin for his fever and cold, because of these reasons, he started his career as Engineer rather to be a part as one more doctor in the familyHis Career choice in NITK , Surathkal then called KREC started with his AIEEE admission procedure where he couldnt convert the seat in REC, Trichy and that time someone told him regarding KREC , Surathkal and added to him that there is a private beach .Very much excited about the life next to beach, he planned to join KREC. Being North Indian south beyond Mumbai is called MADRAShe dont have any knowledge about the state of Karnataka at that time. He came to know about the beautiful state of Karnataka after he got admission in KREC, Surathkal. With Sadness filling the home and mom expressing her hard feelings.. His life @ KREC started with Natural interaction with the ecosystem.
Life @ NITK Surathkal
The first days of his college had some good experience with the seniors!!!!!! Ya it is ragging.now he came to new environment which is different from his homenew set of familynew people.new friendspeople with multilingual background n etc, etcsfirst time he happened to be provided with Curd rice and in Rakeshs home place, curd rice is given only at the time of sickness or illnesswhen he saw the curd rice he was extremely surprised and shocked to accept the fact thats his food. He adapted to the new culture and got in tune with the new Family.
Now the academics started, Rakesh spent most of his time in leisure and had frequent visits to Hotels around to have better food. With the class strength of 44 and he was the 4th topper from last with 62%..He got a wonderful lifetime friend as his room mate named SureshSuresh used to do assignments for Rakesh and Rakesh used to submit these assignments in the class. He was lucky to have a roomie which everyone of us love to have.
Interesting thing happened during the placement seasonnnn. Honeywell is the second company to visit the campus n they were preferring software people( ie computer science only) not ITpay package is huge they preferred high grade fellows and asked them to come to Bangalore next dayNext day WIPRO came to the campusonly 15 people were there with lower grades Rakesh is one among them Due to the low count Wipro conducted only interviewand he spoke to the HR person tactically since thats one good skill he always . one question asked to RAKESH is that wat is the voltage requirement in the cell phone? His answer his 240 V.HR got shocked and asked him how could it be possible. But Rakesh was so skillfull to manipulate the answer , so the HR got very much impressed and allotted him a seat in WIPRO.He was 9th person to be selected in logical design
His first work in WIPRO is to install windows operating system. Installing windows OS was his tough to him. Since he was smart that the company had plenty of opportunity to grow.
After WIPRO he went to INTEL , he got fed up with management activities and left to Qualcomm.
He left the job in Qualcomm and finallt took the Plunnge of doing what he desire and that became his life as a full time author, Lecturer and Corporate Advisor and yes a common man . PLUNNGE Reinvention of New Generation :cheerio::cheerio: became his book describing about 12 human who took Plunnge in his life. A must read.
Plunnge- its not a matter of topper/ loser
Rakesh says that Management is the combination of knowledge and mouth.
KEYNOTES of Career from Rakesh:
Rakesh came up with 10 worst ways of deciding a career which was interesting as well as excitingit made we MBAians to enthroll in it:nono::nono:
Point1 : Throw a dice.
No worries free life no risk and chance oriented.
Point2 : Our parents have already decided.
We live our parents life to be secured.
Point 3 : Our spouses parents decide.
Point 4: We take any job offer that comes first.
Seniors story
Point 5: We avoid failure
Point 6: Peer pressure does wonders.
Point 7: We sign up for counseling
Point 8: We got to career fairs and job portal
Point 9: We hesitate to do what we wish to do
Point 10:We need reports on whats the hottest sector for jobs.
Each point he explained , made the MBAians to get deep into it
Finally he concluded tat
We should do whatever we like to do
SKILL HIGH CHALLENGE HIGH PASSION
SKILL HIGH CHALLENGE LOW - HOBBYas in most peoples cases
Better ways of making career choices.
Find your happiness harmone .

Hai Friends!
I am Marshal (Marsh)... I am here to share the experience that i had in NITK in the first week of my MBA.... Being A day-scholar in graduation, this was the first time i am staying in a hostel... I had lot of fears and worries inside me before i reached the campus of NITK... It was on July 21, I landed at NITK.... The first day passed very quickly as i had the official formalities to be done like paying mess fees, room allocations,etc... The next day was supposed to be a Sunday... When I woke up, so many things were running across my mind... How i gotta mingle with the people coming from all over the country to do MBA along with me... I know very well about what happened in my graduation... It took one long year to mingle with everyone in my BE career... That too, most of them were from the same state in my graduation... It was only for 10 hours that i had such fears inside me... In the evening, i heard someone knocking at my door... I opened the door of my room... But it was not the door of my room which i opened , but the door of my MBA career.... It was all of my colleagues who are eager to have a introduction with me... We had a small party that night which made us know each other.... The Class commenced on July 23 and the staffs were very kind and very affectionate... The Hostel facilities made me feel like NITK is a home away from home....
And on July 25, we celebrated the birthday of one of our classmates , Divakar, by having cake cutting ceremony at midnight....
Everyone participated in the celebrations which had lots of fun and emotions.... It was that moment when I felt we (MBA guys) have become a family.... It just took two days to realise that we are all together... Divakar thanked all of us with some emotions as it was supposed to be the first time he was celebrating his birthday by cutting a cake... The emotions were turned off by the humor of Joy Das and other guys... And we chatted with each other sitting outside the hostel till 2 or 3 am at night before we went to sleep...
The Climatic conditions at NITK is another boon which u wont get anywhere else... It s neither cool nor hot... In all the days, I witnessed slight drizzles which cleaned the roads of the NITK regularly.... Everything is available within the campus like banks. shops, restaurants, beauty parlours, etc... Coming to sports, You can play any sport of your wish as everything is available.... I played Badmitton and Cricket which are my favourites... There is a beach where you can spend some time to relax your mind and enjoy as well.... ![]()
The final thing that you need in a college is the seniors who will guide you in everything.... It was quite surprising that our seniors themselves approached us to interact with us which most of the seniors in most of the colleges wont do...
They were very friendly and they gave us so many useful information regarding the college and about the rules and regulations of the college as well as the hostel.... And the main thing we learnt from them is how to behave with the juniors when we are in the second year... So I assure now that we will approach our juniors as they would have initial fear in themselves about the college... So it is the responsibility of the seniors to address the juniors so that they will get the better idea about the department and the college. So the bottom line is NITK is world of surprises where u can quality education, entertainment and fun as well... It is the best place where you will learn so many things apart from the curriculum... I hope i will learn a lot in two years of MBA in NITK bcoz this one week had given me a lot of new learning experiences...![]()
Hi , i m naveen ...pursuing my MBA 1st yr @ NITK ,surathkal 😃 For past 2 weeks i have had a lot of exposure to practical knowledge than theoritical knowledge
I m really happy to be a part of NITK MBA -
"BEYOND D BEST "
After a long long time, here I am posting again on PG. And as I can see there has not been much activity on the PG Life at NITK page. There were so many things that I wanted to share... Now that I am sitting in front of my computer, I don't remember half of things that needed mention.
I remember day before yesterday though... And what a day it was! We organized a beach clean-up drive at Thannir Bhavi Beach, Mangalore.
And this programme was under "Prayaas", the Social Initiative Programme of NITK-MBA. It was a day full of hard-work and fun. Thannir Bhavi is a beautiful beach... but it needed a good amount of cleaning.
This event was first of it's kind for our batch. And it would not have been successful without the participation of each and everyone from our batch and some seniors as well. Also the local newspaper Uday Vaani covered it on the 8th October issue. We are going to have more such social events in the near future.
This much for now. I have got Business Research project to complete by Thursday. I will share more about life at NITK on PG gradually now that I am active here once again.
The Recreation Club of NITK organised Freshers Cup. Two teams from each department could participate. The fun part was each team must have 6 guys and 2 girls.
So we had two teams from MBA playing today in the knock out rounds. While last to last year, our seniors were the champions of Freshers Cup, this time, sadly both of our teams lost.
It's not that we played bad, the opponents played just too good. I guess we lacked practice... Business Research classes are such that one class would suck out all your energy for a week.
And we are having a lot of BR classes lately.
Whatever, we had total fun. After all winning or losing doesn't matter... What matters is the spirit!
Looking forward to more such events... And hopefully we will win some.
Spark, the after class club of NITK MBA is doing great work lately. What they basically do is organize group and individual events like quiz, debate, public speaking, GDs etc. whenever we have free time. It's mostly to develop skills and make something useful of leisure time. Classes ended at about 2-3pm yesterday and today. So yesterday, we had a quiz (and my team won!!
) and today, they conducted a GD. Sadly I couldn't attend it due to some prior engagements.
The quiz was fun however.
Awesome work by the whole Spark team!
I hope they come up wit more such fun competitions...
NITK for MBA is going great so far. Students have created afterclass clubs(spark), Public relations team, Placement team , magazine team and Creative heads team and get this, we are just in the first semester. Thus you can infer that lot of activities take place initiated by students. The social relations team is the beta phase of the blog and we will soon take it live. This blog contains all details and also question s can be asked. Please stay tune.
To start with, we had two guest lectures (on the same day!!
). Prof. Bhaba Krishna Mohanty from IIM Lucknow, gave us a lecture on "Fuzzy Logic in Internet Business". The duration of the guest talk was small, but it was really interesting. On the same day in the second half, we had another lecture. This one was by Mr. Damodar Kamath, the Principal of Karnataka Bank Staff College. He is also the former GM and CVO of Corporation Bank. He gave us a lecture on "How to have a pleasing personality". He also talked about certain aspects of banking. It was a great day!
We definitely look forward to more such talks from these two personalities in future.Next day onwards we had Prabandhan, our management fest. Most of us were in the organizing teams of one event or the other (me being in the B-Quiz event, Mindbend!
). It was an event under Engineer, the technical fest of NITK. And what an awesome day it was! Speakers from various different fields spoke about various different subjects. The event saw the participation of Arun Sharma (CEO of Mindworkzz, author of TMH CAT series), Balaji Girisaballa ( CEO, Yahoo! Entrepreneurship Network), Gagan Agrawal (Youngest Project Scientist in Asia at 21), Dasami Moodley (Director of Business Development at InVenture), Sumit Dagar (TED Fellow; Designer, Braille Phone Project), Freeman Murray (Co-Founder, Jaaga; Chief Scientist, Nanocast R & D), Gopal B. Hosur ( Inspector General of Indian Police), Shruthi Seth
(Film and TV actor, host/VJ, entrepreneur), Vijay Krishna (Director, Arghyam; Research Director, India Water Portal), Guinness World Records holding beatboxer Vineeth Vincent & India's most popular and fastest rapper Brodha V, etc. It was a pleasure to be among these people and hear them speak (and of course perform!
) We got a chance to interact with Arun Sharma, Dasami Moodley among others... We are grateful to the TED event organizers from Engineer. This was an experience!
They are doing the divine work of keeping the students engaged whenever we have free time...
In a fun way of course.
Some cool, creative and hardworking guys we have in Spark, viz. Ajinkya, Joy, Akash, Divakar. So in the last few days we had quizzes, a GD and a documentary showing. Knowledge is beyond books and can be very much fun... I guess this is what the Spark team believes in.
Company briefing is up next. November is going to be a month full of activities.!
