Does PUMBA offer only dual specialisation? What is its advantage over single subject specialisation?

Is PUMBA better than K.J. Somaiyya and Welingkars?

Hi kalyani,

Yes PUMBA offers only Dual Specialization. The Advantages are many.

1] Core knowledge of two specializations.
2] Very important to stay in touch with what you have done before, e.g comp engg with arnd 2 yrs work ex can take systems as his additonal so that he is still in touch with his industry and try out options like marketing and Finance.
3] In todays world where multi tasking is the need of the day, Single specialization are almost fazed out.
4] Every company needs a multiskilled employee, dual specialization helps you in getting that to a great extent.

Many other reasons as well, which my friends may high light.

As far as which college is better............ the culture of our college is such that we do not go around comparing our University Department (B-School) with any and every, so called B-School in existence today.

All I would say is that last year I was Pune University Rank 18 and I opted for PUMBA as a second option only after JB and today one year down the line I feel I should have put it at first.

I hope I have answered all your queries. In case you have any more feel free to use this thread, just be a bit patient as our exams are going on right now.

Yes PUMBA offers only DUAL specialization. But b4 u start concluding on what a Dual Specialization : Its a Major and an additional.

So if u have a Major as Marketing and Minor as Finance: U r still a MArketing Student. What ur additional offers is critical exposure to an additional specialization which "adds value" to your academic profile. Its not about being specializaed today, Managers need to be aware of more than what they think. If u r a Marketing guy, don't assume that u wud not need to know what is happening on the HR front, or the Finances front....simply put u need to be aware of a whole "other" set of issues which impact ur work, ur biz and ur organizatn as a whole.

So an additional specializatn is an add on which definitely impacts ur thinking. Period...it does not imply ur a Master in 2 specializations...

Ur 2nd question:

Is PUMBA better than K.J. Somaiyya and Welingkars?
Sorry ..but comparisons are not allowed on PG. Which institute is better...well refer to the respective insti threads and make ur own choice and decisions. Whatever u need to know about PUMBA...u ave it here...additional stuff will be posted as and when required

Cheers

Finally the long waits over, good work acadfunda :).

Joining pumba with around 40 months of prior wok ex in the IT industry, I was a little sceptial about the dual specialization being offered , I wasnt sure if it would do me any good and secondly, it would mean an addition load.
But today about a year down the road all doubts have been laid to rest, I have opted for marketing as my major specialization, and finance as my minor, Joining pumba is probably my best decision ever, simply because apart from learning about my core subject of interest, marketing, I am also getting addition knowledge about finance and today i can proudly say that I can decode all the financial stuff written in ET,well... almost :). Its already helping me gain knowledge about a lot of stuff which I earlier was ignorant about or choose to be ignorant about.
We probably have the "BEST" visiting facultly teaching us some very crucial subjects, however let me warn u, a dual specialization would mean an extra effort from your end, u would probably end up studying more that u ever have in your entire life!!! but then again, whats life without its share of challenges?
Neways, I gotta get back to studying, have a paper tom(just couldnt resist the temptation of posting on this thread :))
Any more questions, bring 'em on, we'll try to answer your questions to the best of our knowledge.
Cheers.

Hi,
The HR recruitments were spread across the list of all those companies u ave listed here. But for u to get a better understanding in terms of numbers- the total batch size for HR was around 15 with all 15 being placed and the highest being 6.8 lacs.

Cheers

i'd like to request all those OMS students who r applying only for JB, not to fill up other options, esp somaya n wellinkar. coz whn u dont take these seats alloted to u in the 1st round, the left seats r convertd to inside maharashtra seats. coz of this, only few seats r left for oms, much less thn the quota alloted. this happened with me last yr.

hi,
wanted 2 kno my chances at PUMBA.. hav a 96.65%ile in CET..
m a mumbai university student..

thnx.
priyanka.

Hi Pinu,

Last year the closing score for PUMBA in da 1st round was 162; in the next rounds...admission against vacancy, PUMBA closed at around 153-155.

Ur %ile tells me u r around 120...(i m taking a wild guess)...tht implies u need to score gud in ur GD/PI...maybe 30+...but even that still gives u n outside chance (a very faint one tht 2). Also considering this year the written scores r a lil lower compared to last year and competition year on year has only gotten stiffer....chances look dim this year.

Hope tht helps.

All the best

Cheers

Thanx mate for starting this thread and throwing some light on placements of this year.now the picture is clear which college to apply.could u plz predict what will be cut off for home university open catagory.will be of gr8 help.last year it was 145 (first round).this year paper being tough compared to last year it should go down.also if u could tell wat was cut off at the end of last round.
cheers

Yo Maddy,

Maddy...instead of the score...what helps is the rank at which PUMBA closed last year (around top 100 UoP students). For an Open Pune University candidate, its essential that u be in the TOP 100 to be sure of a seat. With every year...awareness of what PUMBA exactly offers to students has only increased. With more and more companies shifting base to Pune- frm IT to Manufacturing, placement potential in Pune is robust enough with little competition (Unlike Mumbai where the number of quality B-school brands is almost double).

To be sure of a seat, ensure u r in da top 100. I advise, take ur GD/PI seriously, it can only maximize ur chances. Scores as of now can e a lil misleading.....ranks will only show u da way.

All the best....and keep ur queries coming.

Cheers

Hi Vatty,

Thx for the interest shown.

a) Infrastructure: PUMBA, since 2004, moved into a plush new 1, 45, 000 Sq Ft building with all necessary facilities for a batch size of 180 for MBA General and 60 for MBA BT. The library collections is one of the biggest in Pune University (of course incomparable to UoP's Jayakar Library). There are 7 Classrooms, 1 (300 seater) auditorium, 150 seater Computer lab with latest computing and wi-fi services, 1 cafeteria, a plush lawn and garden with bench facilities around the building, handicap accessible entrance and 9 syndicate rooms for other than theory practice.

b) Faculty- PUMBA faculty consists of 3 sections- Permanent- (19), Visiting (7 , Alumni (33)

Regular- 9 PHDs, primarily also responsible for the administration and organization of college activities ....my personal rating since I ave been thru their trainings (AVERAGE)

Visting- This is the killer factor at PUMBA. Some of the best known names of Pune University and Pune's corporate world visit PUMBA. Their contribution to the autonomous curriculum and rigor in training sessions is by far, one of the best in Pune. With their balance of experience and an exposure, the value addition is simply brilliant

Alumni faculty- this is a new addition since 2005. Alumni lectures are scheduled once evry weekend for 3-5 hours on all subjects that just cannot be taught in classrooms...yes its da corporate world walking into PUMBA classrooms. PUMBA Alumni enjoy a lucrative advantage in their position in life, and its payback time....the pay back is simply thru this industry interface session which necessarily keeps students connected to the world they wud exist in 2 years frm joining.

Cheers

Would u please give the brief details about the hostel facility , specially for girls (no. of seats, fees, admission req. etc) . Being an OMS seat in girls hostel is essential requirement for me to join PUMBA (and I am so much interested to do so).

Thanks in advance.

Hi B-set,

Hostel facility is available but is limited to a few students only (merit wise). The fee for hostel acco is Rs 1200 per annum (yeah u read it rite:)). Mess facility is available with 9 canteens within Pune Univ, 3 options closest to u give it at Rs 600 one time, Rs 900 2 times.

But if u can also think of other thn hostel acco, with 2-3 members from ur batch, u can avail a flat at a monthly rent of Rs 700- Rs 1000 (can be cheaper), mess is again Rs 600 one time (nite)...u can go for the Univ canteen's for ur mess both times as u wud be in college the whole day. Pune is a very safe city...in fact the places where u can stay Aundh, Baner, Sanghvi, Pashan are all 10-15 mins frm Pune Univ, and all have plenty of ladies hostels/flats on rent etc...u need not worry.

PUMBA, being a Univ Deptt., academic fee is very low--> Rs 39,000 per annum. The ROI is thus one of the best in this country (considering this year as a base...the average salary 5.75 lacs). So u cud adjust with better staying facilities outside Pune University. Dun worry, we ave a lot of Pagalgals frm PUMBA here on PG who cud help ya out wid dat. Let D day come....

Pune is a wonderful plce to stay n do ur MBA, its an enriching experience tht just changes the way u live...I am sure, post 2 years after PUMBA, u will only remember it as "one of the best things tht ever happened to u"
Hope I cud answer ur Q. Any other queries....just shoot
All the best...

Cheers
